Ancient Prehistoric Stone Age Neolithic Flint Danish Dagger Scandinavian
A beautiful. Extremely rare and well provenanced neolithic dagger, dating to approximately 2300- 2000 B.C. and found in Scandinavia. This beautiful chip stone tool was made from a large piece of flint. Broken down and then chipped into form, the attractive surface flaking was created by the use of a soft hammer, likely made from bone, or antler. Beautiful stitching marks, clearly showing where each chip was removed by the ancient knapper. The emergence of flint daggers in late neolithic Scandinavian cultures is seen as a fascinating response to new technology being used in the production of bronze daggers in central Europe. From the 3rd millennium onwards. This new metal weaponry clearly made an impression on the surrounding cultures of this period, who began to make flint copies, and who's influence can be seen through their stylistic ... moresimilarities. This transition is one of the overwhelming achievements of man, enabling food surplus and the rise of civilization. Length: 4 3/4 inches. Condition: Good. Tip and handle of dagger broken, old collection label, likely bearing the find site, still attached. Provenance: An extremely well provenanced piece. From the collection of James Curle(1862-1944) of Melrose, Scotland, and thence by descent. Although a lawyer by profession, Curle was an accomplished amateur archaeologist and his name remains one of the most famous in the field of Romano-British Archaeology, having excavated and published extensively in the early 1900's. From 1888-1903 Curle acquired the most magnificent collection of Nordic antiquities outside Scandinavia, eventually selling most of his pieces to the British Museum in 1921. The Curle collection in the British Museum has been the subject of numerous publications and remains an important

4400Y.O: WONDERFUL AX AXE DANISH STONE AGE NEOLITHIC CHALCOLITHIC FLINT DAGGER C
DANISH STONE AGE ARTIFACTS BY PALATINA AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEED Description"Thick butted b-type ax( axe) Broad bladed" Length of this terrific adze is 113 mms. Wonderful marble-like flint with fossil includings! Belonging to the last period of the Stone Age. 2400-1800 BC, known as the Dagger period( Copper Age- Chalcolithic) coincided with the early Bronze Age in the British Isles and Central Europe. Weapons and tools made of copper and bronze were introduced and provided a challenge for those who made flint tools. The result can be seen in the excellent examples of imitations in flint of foreign bronze daggers. At the end of the period, the production of metal implements finally gained a foothold, and there is evidence of an emerging new social stratification. This is reflected in finds from settlements with both small and much ... morelarger long houses. Burial customs varied from simple interments below ground or in passage graves, to burials in stone cists or log coffins covered with large mounds. The longitudinal section of this ax is V-formed. The butt-end is rectangular. The broad bladed axes are without doubt influenced by the contemporary copper and bronze axes. Provenance is an old collection. More details will follow the artifact. I guarantee absolutely for the authenticity of this terrific Younger Stone Age ax. Please view also my other auctions with relics from the European Prehistory. Powered by The free listing tool. FLINT DAGGER (Late Neolithic, Denmark, Nord Jutland)
Authenticity is not guaranteed. Danish Neolithic flint dagger. Length- 18 cm. Width- 4 cm. Broken End. Type: V. 2.350- 1.800 BC. How does one date a flint dagger? In the Dagger Period. At the end of the Neolithic era, the magnificent flint daggers were popular. Although the flintworkers were conservative and bound by tradition, they were also open to new currents of fashion. The appearance of the flint daggers therefore changed over time. Using these changes in the design archaeologists can divide them into six dagger types that can be dated relatively narrowly. It is mainly the hilts that distinguish the types. The Neolithic flint daggers are classified in six main types, each with a number of sub-types. This particular item is of type V, however its authenticity is not guaranteed. The flint daggers of late Neolithic Denmark are some of the ... moremost technically complex stone tools in the world. An experimental approach was utilized to evaluate the production technology and related archaeological implications of the type Ic flint dagger. One of the earliest Danish dagger forms. The experiments suggest that although a relatively simple tool kit was probably employed to create these remarkable implements, a high degree of technical proficiency working flint was necessary to complete each discrete production step. Because of this technical complexity as well as the apparent staged nature of type Ic production, the makers of these daggers were probably specialists who participated in every aspect of the production process. Furthermore, the experiments indicate that sites where these specialist flintworkers produced type Ic flint daggers can only be identified using a broad suite of morphological debitage characteristics, and not the presence of any single debitage characteristic alone.

Prehistoric Stone Age Danish Neolithic Type III Flint Dagger - 1900 BC
An ancient Danish Neolithic flint“type III” dagger. Dating to 1900-1700 BC. Flint daggers such as this represent the pinnacle of prehistoric flintworking. Pressure flaked. The short handle widening slightly at the base of the blade, which then tapers to a point. The handle is square in cross-section, unique among flintknapping cultures anywhere in the world. Worked from a fine caramel coloured flint, the precision of design is truly overwhelming. As the societies of prehistoric Europe began to adopt metalworking. The ancient Scandinavians continued in their use of flint, delighting in the art of this old technology. This precious dagger mimics the form of elite bronze weapons that were circulating in Europe at the time. It is beautifully poetic, mirroring the technology that would ultimately supplant it and providing one final, beautiful ... moreflourish of the European flint industry. Length: 6 3/4 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Interestingly, the relative lack of width of the blade in comparison to other examples suggests this piece was re-sharpened on numerous occasions in ancient times before being deposited/lost. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Lars Otto Johan Holst(1863-1936) A veterinary surgeon who was active in Ronneby, southern Sweden from around 1887. Mr. Holst took a strong interest in the prehistory of ancient Scandinavia and he obsessively acquired throughout his career, forming one of the most magnificent collections of early Stone Age artefacts. He obtained these objects from around Ronneby, partly through gathering himself, and partly as payment for work done in his service as a vet between 1887- 1929. Please note that the new purchaser will be provided with a copy of two photographs showing Mr. Holst in his office and his collection mounted on the wall.
