Acheulean Hand Axe - Pre-Paleo - A 250,000 yr-old Neanderthal KILLING MACHINE !
For auction is an Acheulean Hand Axe acquired by Henry Martyn Field(brother of Cyrus Field) While in Verberie France in. 1876. He(and Cyrus) were my Great. Great Uncles on my Mother's side, and handed this artifact down, with many other Neanderthal& Cro- Magnon pieces. Through the family for decades. It is 4" long x 2-3/8" wide and came from a massive cave system in North-Eastern France. Made of a beautiful. Shiny greenish grey flint common only to this area of France. Possesses ample patina and mineralization due a point hidden away in some dark cave for so long. This piece was brought back to America in 1889 when Henry returned from his"around the world trip" when he finished his best-seller: Lakes of Killarney to the Golden Horn" 1876. Now. Since the 1920s, It is illegal to obtain any artifacts anymore, ... morelet alone exporting them. This artifact really displays Man’s new adoption of the“teardrop” shape for his projectile point and tools. It also shows some of the earliest signs of individual tapering& flaking of edges and tips ever seen on tools and/or projectile points. Prior to this. Little attention was paid to form, symmetry, and precision cutting edges. It is in as found condition. With NO modern funny business, and is in as Perfect a condition as one could ask for… being this old! But. I am retired now and expenses are expenses. And as I keep these older pieces in a safe deposit box, and never get to see them anyway, may as well This is simply a beautiful piece of human history and is one of my favorite Acheulean pieces. I am breaking it out of my Pre-Paleo collection just to test the waters. I started to seriously expanded my pre-paleo artifacts. From these REAL ancient cultures, about ten years ago, and now it's time to weed some of them out in order to get the collection into a manageable condition and let someone else a bit younger enjoy them. The Mousterian. And especially the Acheulean hand Axe is the most successful, and thus the longest used tool in all human

Offered here is a rather large size Acheulean Hand axe from Mauritania. Measures 6 inches or 15cm long 4 inches or 10cm wide 1 1/4 inch or 3 cm thick. WEIGHS 70 GRAMS. By its style and design. This specimen probably dates anywhere from 1,000,000 BC to 500,000 BC. This particular axe is rather large and well formed for the period. The narrow point suggests it may have been used for digging. Such hand axes were not just the product of idle activity but were often manufactured in locations specifically used for this purpose where raw materials were found. Work areas have been found where several individuals had sat and worked together. Each sitting position is surrounded by a semicircle of raw materials. Partially completed cores, and flakes from the finished tools THANKS FOR LOOKING. NR.
