An elegant. Unusual and well preserved Ancient Luristan Late Bronze Age Pick Axe, dating to approximately 900 BC. The Axe. Of high copper content, is of typical Luristan form, with straight robust shaft and blunt edge, cylindrical socket and a spikey projection at the back. The lower margins of the socket have parallel converging points. Indentations and remnants of the original wraps can be seen on the proximal shaft- extremely rare. Blunt ended shafts were meant for causing depressed fractures and deep lacerations to the head. Probably originally for ceremonial use. Ancient Near Eastern Luristan Bronze Ceremonial Axe With Ram Decoration - 1000BC
An ancient Luristan Persian axe with ram decoration. Dating to around 1000 BC. The axe is of classic Luristan form; with a flaring. Robust head and cylindrical socket with ribbed decoration. A decorative ram lies at the back of the piece, reduced to the essense of form in a striking depiction. Blunt ended axes such as this weapon were designed to cause depressed fractures and deep lacerations to the head. Though this piece adheres to that design, it was probably originally for ceremonial use. Produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans, this weapon would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. These individuals often served as mercenaries in the service of rulers in the lowlands of Mesopotamia. This is a true ancient relic from the Early Iron Age in history; this Lorestan/Luristan Bronze Socket Axe Head features a cylindrical shaft hole with four butt-spikes. That are all joined together along the base. The surface has a raised linear design. Recovered from the Lorestan area in West-Central Iran; this antiquity dates approximately between 1200 BC– 800 BC. It has very thick and flared blades. The socket has a raised ring or ridge around it and underneath both blades are three raised lines cast into the bronze. This is quite an unusual type acquired from a large private collection. It weighs 611 grams and measures 16 cm across. This piece is a must for any ancient weapon collection.
