TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Peoples of the Past: Babylonians ... moreby H.W.F. Saggs. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 192 pages. Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press; 1995) ISBN: 0806127651. Babylon stands with Athens and Rome as a cultural ancestor of western civilization. It was founded by the people of ancient Mesopotamia. Who settled in the fertile crescent between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers before the fourth millennium B.C. Some of the earliest experiments in agriculture and irrigation, the invention of writing, the birth of mathematics and the development of urban life all began there. Biblical associations are also numerous, from Nineveh to the Tower of Babel and the Flood. In"Babylonians" H. W. F. Saggs describes the ebb and flow in the successive fortunes of the Sumerians, Akkadians, Amorites, and Babylonians who flourished in this region. Using evidence from pottery, cuneiform tablets, cylinder seals, early architecture and metallurgy, he illuminates the myths, religion, languages, trade, politics, and warfare, as well as the legacy, of the Babylonians and their predecessors. During the twentieth century. Collaboration by archaeologists from many nations has greatly increased the range of archaeological evidence, while work by linguists has gradually unlocked the secrets of the thousands of clay tablets recovered from the area. Today the historical record for some periods of ancient Mesopotamia is substantially better than for some centuries of Europe in the Christian era. Gaps and uncertainties remain, but Babylonians conveys a rich and fascinating picture of the development of this remarkable civilization from before the beginning of the third millennium B.C. Clay candle holder with a cuneiform inscription in Old Babylonian
This is an original piece hand-made by me. It is neither an antiquity nor a copy of one. The shape is inspired by ancient Near Eastern pottery. The inscription in Old Babylonian says: Let the fire be lit. Let Girra shine, let there be light! Girra was the Mesopotamian god of fire) I made this piece back in 2011 from a very nice clay I dug up at local sandpit. It is very dense with a content of mica and has a really nice smell to it when fired. I had to swap for a less attractive processed clay later due to firing problems with a new batch, but this piece is still made of the nice old stuff. It is fired with wood in a stone kiln I built with my girlfriend, so it is hand made in every aspect of the process: the wood being also collected by us while working in a forest: My signature in cuneiform is at the bottom. The inner diameter of the neck ... moreis 3.7 cm = 1.5' I will enclose paper with transliteration. Transcription, translation and some basic information about the language etc.
Old Assyrian Wedding Contract - cuneiform clay tablet, hand written copy, signed
This clay tablet is a hand-made. Hand-written copy of the original tablet. It is made the same way copies were made in ancient Near East, i. e. copied by hand, not cast, signed in cuneiform. The layout of the text is kept as on the original tablet. It is a copy of an Old Assyrian wedding contract excavated in Kanesh(Anatolia) in the 1920's by Prof. Bedřich Hrozný. Today it is deposited at the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts of the Charles University in Prague. The original clay tablet dates back to 20th-18th century BC and was found in an Old Assyrian trade colony Kanesh(today's Kültepe. Located in central Anatolia) Old Assyrian merchants, whose wives stayed in Aššur(Old Assyrian"capital" located in northern Mesopotamia) married side-wives here. This contract confirms the marriage of Puzur-Ištar and his secondary ... morewife Ištar-Lamassi and specifies the conditions of the marriage- the amount of silver that will be payed by the one who leaves the other and the circumstances under which Puzur-Ištar can/can't marry another secondary wife. Hand-written in Old Assyrian. In an Old Assyrian cuneiform script, fired in a kiln with wood. The text is written on the obverse, lower edge, reverse, upper edge and the left side of the tablet. A colophon at the end of the text(the last line on the left side of the tablet) contains an information, that it is a copy written by me, as was the custom in Mesopotamia(sort of a signature of the scribe) Size: 4.6 cm x 5,6 cm x 2,1 cm(1.8' x 2.2' x 0.8' = width x height x thickness I will enclose a paper with transliteration. Transcription, translation to English and with some basic information about the text, language, script etc.

Clay Tablet - a wish of health, happiness, love etc. to a woman in cuneiform
Notice for e-bay employees- THIS IS NOT AN ANTIQUITY. IT IS A TABLET WRITTEN BY ME IN OLD BABYLONIAN IN CZECH REPUBLIC IN OCTOBER 2013(Babylonian doesn't mean it is from Iraq, it means Babylonian language, a dialect of Akkadian) This cuneiform clay tablet is not an antiquity. It is a hand written original text- composed and written by me. It is a universal wish of health, happiness, good luck, joy and love to a woman(I am also selling identical wish to a man in a separate listing- the difference is in possessive pronouns and verb forms) It is written in Old Babylonian, a dialect of Akkadian used in ancient Mesopotamia roughly in 20th-16th century BC. The text rhymes and translated to English it reads: Tell the receiver of this tablet the following: May you live- may you dwell in the presence of your protective deity(the deity being a ... moresynonym for good luck) may you be healthy- may you rejoice with the joy of your liver; may you be eternal- may you love with the love of your heart. The text is written on the obverse. Lower edge and reverse of the tablet. On the left side of the tablet, there is a colophon(the last bit of text containing information like date, name of the scribe, whether the tablet is a copy etc. written in Sumerian(but can be read both in Akkadian and Sumerian) It says"Zeni wrote this" which was the usual formula for mentioning scribe's name. Dimensions: 4.6 x 3.9 x 1.7 cm = 1.8' x 1.5' x 0.7' width x height x thickness) The tablet is made of clay and fired in a kiln with wood in 2013. I will enclose a paper with transliteration.
