Ancient Near East Bronze Age Terracotta Pottery Vessel - 2500 BC
An ancient Near Eastern Bronze Age terracotta pot. Dating to 2500– 2000 BC. This rustic pot has a truly hand-made feel. Yet we should not see the design as haphazard or untidy. Rather there is a sense of inventive care, from the carefully impressed cord-like decoration to the delicate strap handles, the ancient potter has given this vessel their full attention. Indeed, this example shows a level of artistic flair and poise that is not often encountered in ceramics of the period. The intricate pressed decoration is not merely a decorative device. Rather it mimics the form of bread stamps used in the period. Before being placed into the oven to bake, loaves were marked with the very same bands that we see here. As such, we can imagine how this vessel was not merely a utilitarian object, but was a piece of ancient art with symbolic value. Height: ... more5 inches. Condition: Very good. With encrustations, unrestored. It is rare to have a complete example with no restoration. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. Acquired 1990’s.
