This piece is in excellent condition. It is 9 inches in diameter. Franz Walter Bergmann was born on August 6. 1898, in Dimling, Austria, a town northwest of Vienna. His parents were both involved in the arts: his mother was a pianist, and his father was an amateur artist and a violinist. After serving in World War I for three years, he enrolled in the National Academy of Art in Vienna and embarked on a seven-year course of study, focusing on figure painting and portraiture. Although schooled in the academic tradition, Bergmann also adopted elements derived from the more avant-garde German Expressionist style. By 1924 he was exhibiting in Vienna and Stockholm. The following year, he graduated with honors. He left Vienna to tour Europe. And in early 1926 he traveled to the United States. After a brief stay in New York, he moved to Chicago, ... morewhere he obtained a commission to paint murals for theaters owned by Balaban& Katz. That year his mural sketches were exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago. He then moved to New York, where he joined the staff of the noted Austrian architect and designer Josef Urban. His main duties involved the execution of several murals. He also exhibited in the Architects League in 1927. In 1929 Bergmann decided to move to San Francisco. On his way to the West Coast. The artist spent several weeks in Denver, where he painted the scenic Rocky Mountains. Once in San Francisco, Frank Bergman, as he was known by then, began exhibiting at various galleries, and the critics took favorable notice of him. He also completed murals for the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. The success of these murals led to numerous commissions executed throughout the city. The most prestigious for Bergmann’s reputation were the murals he painted for the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939. By the end of the decade, Bergmann was among the most celebrated modernist figurative painters working in Northern California. Antique Austrian Bronze Owl by Franz Bergmann, Vienna, jewelry box, door stop
Fabulous antique Franz Bergmann bronze of an owl resting on the book. Book opens into a jewelry box. This piece dates to early 20th century. Owl has beautiful dirty gold patina. On top of the brown book and fabulous glass eyes. Bronze Size- Height 10.5in. Base is 6in long by 4.5in wide. It is heavy- around 4.3kg(9.5lbs) It is marked Geschutzt on the bottom of the book as shown in one of the photos. It means patented in Austrian- mark common to many Bergman bronzes. I sold an owl just like this one last year that had BERG written in same location as Geschutzt. He was not a sculptor himself as often described wrongfully. There were many anonymous sculptors. Hired temporarily by the workshops. At the turn of the 19th/20th Century there were about fifty workshops producing Vienna Bronzes. Cold painted bronze' refers to pieces cast in Vienna and then decorated in several layers with so called dust paint; the know-how for the mix of this kind of paint has been lost. This large, figural piece stands approximately 9 5/8 inches tall. It is about 6 1/4 inches long by 4 inches wide. Unpacked, it weighs a little over 5 pounds. This sculpture depicts a woman dressed in exotic garb, with her arms outstretched. She is walking down stairs, with a railing behind. It is possibly a depiction of Salome. This would be a rare addition to a collection of vintage European art metal. Identification Beneath the base of this sculpture is the mark of Franz Bergmann(aka Franz Bergman) An urn-shaped mark with a B. It is also marked, GESCH 6429. Franz Xaver Bergmann(1861- 1936) owned a Viennese foundry which produced bronze sculptures. ... moreThis piece is antique or vintage, but I do not know exactly when it was produced. Condition The sculpture displays well overall. As shown. It has light wear. There are a few missing/ broken off pieces of the twisted wire fringe that hang from the lady's sash; for a handy person, these would probably not be too difficult to replace. At the back of her head is a tiny, neat hole(which appears original) and I do not know if another piece was supposed to be affixed here or not. The color is more uniformly gold than I would expect of an antique bronze sculpture, and thus it may have been overcoated/ painted gold at some point. It is a complex and meticulously cast piece. The binding of one book is marked with the Bergmann logo. GESCH” and the model number“6045” The underside of the owl's tail is similarly inscribed, making this one of Bergmann's most thoroughly marked pieces. The bottom of the piece is closed with a precisely fitted. Cast plate held with 4 bronze screws. The eyes appear to be onyx and are probably replacements since no adhesives available 100 years ago could have survived till now. The aged patina is lovely with very few abrasions. Large Original Antique Franz Bergmann Lamp- Native American War Dance Large Original Antique Franz Bergmann Lamp- Native American War Dance Offered here is a very rare original Franz Bergmann bronze lamp. Titled for reference"Native American War Dance" Two large male figures dance around an illuminated bonfire. The piece is approximately 9 inches high, 13 inches wide, and 6 inches front to back. It is one of the most thoroughly marked Bergmanns you will ever see: each figure is marked with"GESCHUTZ" and the model number; both figure's shields are also marked with the Bergmann logo and"GESCHUTZ" The bonfire is a wonderful example of the Bergmann foundry talent. The woodpile is too complicated to cast in one piece. It appears that the inner framework was cast then about 100 branches and twigs were separately ... morecast and brazed or soldered together and individually painted. The figures are wonderfully realized- their movement realistically captured. It's remarkable work. The wiring has been redone: old tape has been removed and the wiring reconnected with wire nuts; the old frayed cord has been replaced with new fabric covered lamp cord which duplicates the original. The whole sculpture is in excellent antique condition. Ready to display. This is one of the rarest Bergmann pieces I've encountered: in over 60 years of collecting, I've seen one such piece and this is that piece. It's not pictured in any of the bronze references we have, and we have most of them. I've also reviewed over 1000 Bergmann auction records and not seen it.
