Fabulous antique Franz Bergmann bronze of an owl resting on the book. Book opens into a jewelry box. This piece dates to early 20th century. Owl has beautiful dirty gold patina. On top of the brown book and fabulous glass eyes. Bronze Size- Height 10.5in. Base is 6in long by 4.5in wide. It is heavy- around 4.3kg(9.5lbs) It is marked Geschutzt on the bottom of the book as shown in one of the photos. It means patented in Austrian- mark common to many Bergman bronzes. I sold an owl just like this one last year that had BERG written in same location as Geschutzt. This Vienna Bronze from the former sample stock of the Bergmann factory in Vienna was created around 1920. It shows a quite popular erotic subject at the time. Depicting an oriental scenery. On a polychrome painted carpet the inkwell(with a glass recipient) is hidden underneath a decorated pillow that works as a lid. Further a young woman is sitting on a bench. Covering her nakedness with green draped sheet, accompanied by a man in oriental cloths. The figure is made of cold-painted white metal which was used as a surrogate material in the first years of the Vienna Bronzes as well as between the two world wars when bronze was needed otherwise.This inkwell is in good condition indicating only minor signs of age and wear. This sculpture depicts a woman dressed in exotic garb, with her arms outstretched. She is walking down stairs, with a railing behind. It is possibly a depiction of Salome. This would be a rare addition to a collection of vintage European art metal. ANTIQUE PAINTED AUSTRIAN BERGMANN VIENNA BRONZE BOOK ROW ARABIAN MONKEY BOOKENDS
Up for auction is an impressive bookend pair from Austria. It is a pleasant action to inform the reader that this is a perfect antique set. And one of the first pairs produced in this design. Some may recognize this design as one produced also by the J.B. Hirsch Foundry. That is true in part. With these, there is a short, yet unique lineage. These pair being sold were the absolute first, and are considered First generation Austrian. Second generation Austrian sets, came on different bases, and were stamped in red ink MADE IN AUSTRIA. Then, there was a stop in production. Production started again, in France, with Susse Freres, the Susse Brothers, but instead of their version being dressed in multicolor paint, they were shades of a single color, with an ivory book slipped in the monkeys' hands. A few years later, the J.B Hirsch Company ... morereleased these in a manner closest to Susse Freres on black polished stone bases in bronze, gold, or teal green. These were all before 1930. Production ceased entirely mid 1930. On occasion, you will run across the more recent re-issues from the 1990's I believe, those have popularity amongst some because of the charmed design, and the scarcity of finding an authentic set. All that aside. These are fantastic, and were made before the Scopes Monkey trial started here in the U.S. These are from the very early 1920's, like 1921 or 1922. Be advised, that for collectors of those Arabian Bazaar themed bronzes, these are ideal. These have a closer relationship to those Arabic works, than they do the Trials and Writing on Evolution, but still, quite fitting nonetheless. On the book pages, the reader will Arabic lettering, something not seen on later pairs. That adds value to this already striking set. None of the Austrian varieties of these were marked on the bodies. Only on the bases. Remember. 1st generation fancy mark, 2nd generation red ink stamp. On the stone bases. Original Franz Bergmann Wiener Bronze: Standing Dachshund- black version We are offering this original Vienna Bronze(Wiener Bronze) Handmade in Vienna by the Franz Bergmann- Fuhrmann Company. The object bears the typical Bergmann"B enclosed in a jug" mark. This item is 86mm long(including the tail) Thats about 3.4 inches. As these figurines are still manufactured and painted by hand, small variations in detail or color, to the pictured object, are normal. Each item will be delivered in a velvet pouch together with a certificate by the manufacturer. The certificate will be signed and numbered and guarantees you that you received an original Bergmann figurine. About the production of these miniatures- the"Lost Wax Method" The actual material of the object is Brass. I think these figurines were called"Vienna Bronze" ... morebecause Brass was not that well known as Bronze. Achieving such a high level of detail on a rather small figurine requires a very complex and time intensive production process: Usually it starts with a rubber mould. Liquid Brass would destory the rubber and for this reason the figurine is in the first step casted out of wax.
