Here is a late 19 th century/ early 20 th century bronze Grand Tour statue of Michelangelo’s Bacchus. The Roman god of wine. In a reeling pose suggestive of drunkenness. A small satry stands behind him. It has wonderful patina and stands almost 11” tall on a flat black marble base. This small bronze was typical of the souverniers the wealthy American and British tourists would bring home from their“Grand Tour” of Europe. This particular statue would have come from Florence at that time. This is a nice heavy antique bronze and would be a nice addition to any collection. Background: The original was commissioned by Raffaele Riario. A high-ranking Cardinal and collector of antique sculpture. When he rejected it. Jacopo Galli. Raised by a she wolf who killed his brother Remus to establish the capital. His hands hold an axe, implement used to kill his brother, and possible a scepter of some sort. Finely cast with a warm brown patina, the encrier urn cast with three ram's heads alternating with Satyr masks supported on three hooved feet; the cover cast with winged figure of Cupid seated by a wolf on a mound base bolted to a spreading circular scole with mask and floral swags. Ormolu with five porcelain medallions representing greek classical profiles. Ca. 1850. This large(4 1/3" Jewel Box or Chest is a typical Grand Tour item made mid 19th century by the famous Cabinet Maker of the French Emperor Napoléon III. It still wears its original label showing"Tahan Fr. de l'Empereur" Tahan. Purveyor— Fournisseur— of the Emperor) proof that this wonderful box was sold in his own luxury shop, visited by aristocrats and wealthy art lovers from all the world on their way to the discovery of the Antique World. Tahan products– celebrated at the London Exhibition of 1851, at the Paris Universal ... moreExhibition in 1855– were also sold by other high end objects of art other retailers: they were then sold without his mark or label. This unusual box has five hand painted in lilac pink on grey background porcelain medallions showing classical profiles of Mars/ Ares. God of War(lid) and four different classical maidens or goddesses(two on the front panel, one on each side) For such an object, the porcelain is very finely painted and was probably done at the Sèvres factory. Each medallion is set as for a precious jewel with claws in an extremely detailed ormolu mount. The back side shows two ormolu stars. The frames. Holding brass panels with thin dots design, are set with tiny rivet heads. Lid and lower rim are surrounded by pearls. The box is resting on four ball feet and stands very stable. Lid is closing fine, no hinge problem. No repair. A former collector replaced the original fragile silk lining by lasting exotic wood panels well fitted on all sides. Fortunately. The craftsman was requested to keep the original bottom velvet(color was lilac, matching the porcelain medallions) of the box with its Tahan label. Gilding partly rubbed. Victorian Antique Patinated Cast Iron Recumbant Lion - Grand Tour - Landseer
I think this is one of my most favorite estate finds ever! In the early 1860's. During the reign of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Sir Edwin Henry Landseer was commissioned to create four huge bronze lion figures to sit at the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square in London. Landeer designed the lions and they were cast by Baron Marochette. They were placed in Trafalgar Square in 1867, shortly before Landseer passed away in 1873. Landseer was a favorite artist of Queen Victoria. When these giant lions were finally unveiled. There was a hue and cry in London because the lion's tongue was hanging out of the side of it's mouth and Londoners thought this was undignified. Landseer, who worked from photos and other artist's engravings of wildlife, based most of this lion sculpture on other artist's engravings. But, ... morefor these lions, he used his own house cats as models and oddly enough, his cats had tongues that lolled outside of their mouths. Pretty amazing stuff, eh? These Grand Tour lions were made with the tongues back in the lions' mouths so that the lion appeared more dignified and regal. Anyway. The lions were so popular that smaller versions were cast in bronze and iron and many of these were sold to tourists on the"grand tour. This particular lion is cast iron and looks like, at one time, it might have been silver plated because the front legs of the big cat have a silver cast to them. Whatever plating was used, presumably to protect the lion from the elements since many were placed on pedestals in the garden, some of it has worn off over the years. So, this lion has a moderately weather worn feeling to it, with just a hint of rust on the rump. That said, the detail of the casting is still fabulous and does not look like it survived the elements in any way, shape or form. So, it might have been outside only in summers.
