Store Search search Title. ISBN and Author by Susan Watkins Estimated delivery 3-12 business days Format Hardcover Condition Brand New The intriguing and enduring tale of the free-spirited Queen Mary. Who refused to accept the constraints of her birth and position. Watkins recreates Mary's world—the landscapes, the palaces, the courtly culture and the details of the domestic scene. Includes a wealth of historical illustrations and specially commissioned photos. All the world lamented the execution of Mary Queen of Scots. No man ever saw her without love or will read her history without pity" Whether it is this French Marie Stuart recorded by Brantome. The German Maria Stuart of Schiller's tragedy, the Italian Maria Stuart of Donizetti's opera, or the more recent queen of film played by Katharine Hepburn or Vanessa Redgrave, ... moreher story resonates over four centuries. The tale of the free-spirited and beautiful Queen of Scots, who refused to accept the constraints of her birth and position, still appeals to us today. Mary's inheritance gave her both the Scottish throne in 1542. When she was only six days old, and a claim to the English throne that would lead to her death. It gave her an upbringing in France, cultural and intellectual center of Europe, where she witnessed the power play of her Guise relations, married the heir to the French throne, and became queen of France, only to be widowed at eighteen. There was a turbulent interlude as ruler of Scotland, made the more tumultuous by two disastrous marriages and rumors of adultery and murder. Finally, there was an eighteen-year exile as Elizabeth I's prisoner, passing the long days of captivity at her embroidery or her prayers, the center of a network of intrigue, double agents, coded dispatches, and mysterious couriers, which was to lead ineluctably to her trial and execution. Susan Watkins re-creates the world in which Mary lived— the landscapes. The palaces and the courtly culture, and the fine details of the d

Queen of Scots and, in France, as Marie Stuart) 7 December 1542– 8 February 1587) She was Queen of Scots from 14 December 1542 to 24 July 1567. She was also the queen consort of France from 10 July 1559 to 5 December 1560. After a long period of custody in England, she was tried and executed for treason following her alleged involvement in three plots to assassinate Elizabeth I of England and place herself on the English throne. Look at the beauty ... moreof the carving, this is a really breathtaking cameo, look at the details of her dress and how that carver captured the exact style of that era. Her face reveals pride and regality, she has a queenly bearing. The carving is more than superb and very detailed. Mary Stuart is a very rare subject to find in a cameo and this one is a beautiful example, a wonderful work of art, very detailed cameo, carved by an artist. Rarest cameo and subject very desirable collectors' piece. This is an outstanding piece that I have been very lucky to find. Even the frame is magnificent. Totally and elaborately worked. A true and rare quality piece. A bit of history: Mary Stuart was born at Linlithgow Palace on 7th(or on 8th as others say) December 1542. The daughter of James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise. Six days after her birth her father died, and she became Queen of Scotland. From her infancy, Scotland's rival pro-English and pro-French factions plotted to gain control of Mary. Her French mother was chosen as regent, and she sent Mary to France in 1548. Mary lived as part of the French royal family. In April 1558 she married the Dauphin Francis; she secretly agreed to bequeath Scotlan

Mary Queen of Scots France by Vertue 1735 antique engraved decorative print MAria Scotorv Regina et Franciae Dotaria Issued 1735. London Engraved by G. Vertue Fine original antique engraving. Printed in the mid-18th century on quality hand made paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. In Good or better condition. Sheet displays age toning and small minor spotting as typical[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. A nice impression of an interesting image. Any minor defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. Sheet measures c. 9 3/8" W x 15 3/8" H. Engraved area measures c. 7 7/8" W x 10 7/8" H. 31865] note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. ... moreEach sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. Please look carefully and make your decision knowing this antique image is nice. But it is not in perfect"like new" condition. However, with whatever flaws it possesses, it remains entirely worthy of ownership and inclusion in any related collection. We feel it will prove very pleasing to its new owner. THE HISTORY OF SCOTLAND By William Robertson. D.D. 3 VOLUMES 1809 SUBTITLE: DURING THE REIGNS OF QUEEN MARY AND KING JAMES VI. TILL HIS ACCESSION TO THE CROWN OF ENGLAND: WITH A REVIEW OF THE SCOTTISH HISTORY PREVIOUS TO THAT PERIOD; AND AN APPENDIX CONTAINING ORIGINAL PAPERS. William Robertson(1721– 93) Scottish churchman and historian. He was born at Borthwick. Mid Lothian, on the 19 th of September 1721 and educated at the school of Dalkeith and the University of Edinburgh. Robertson was one of the first to approach history as an empirical science. His History of Scotland during the Reigns of Queen Mary and James VI. Is a factual, pragmatic history, which was praised by Edmund Burke, David Hume, and others. Soon after its success. He became principal of the Univ. of Edinburgh and historiographer royal. He was to go on to write several ... moremore notable historical works. These volumes begin with a biography of his life, which is quite interesting in itself. Mary. Queen of Scots(1542– 1587) Also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland was six days old when her father, James V, died, and she succeeded to the thrown as the only legitimate heir. Her father had married Mary of Guise. Who brought a large French contingent to Scotland with her. Meanwhile. The Reformation was changing Scotland largely through the efforts of John Knox. The religious issue was inextricably connected with opposition to the French Roman Catholic party of Mary of Guise(queen regent after James’s death in 1542) and of her daughter Mary Queen of Scots who lived in France as dauphiness and then as queen. By the time Mary Queen of Scots arrived(1561) in Scotland Catholicism had almost disappeared from the Lowlands. The turbulent career of the young queen hinged primarily on her personal involvements and on the conflict between the crown and the nobility. Now divided into pro-French(Catholic) and pro-English(Protestant) parties. Elizabeth I of England maintained the Protestant party with money and arms. Mary’s struggle ended in loss o

This ephemera collection of the R. M.S. Queen Mary of the Cunard White Star Line was part of my grandfather's travel scrapbook. Most of the items being sold here were printed in England. This is a large collection of memorabilia and not all could be shown with only 12 photos. My Grandfather notated many of the pieces to show people he met and his own berth or table seatings. There are 2 newspaper clippings included which describe records set by the Queen Mary on the trip west ending August 24. 1936, on which she won the Atlantic blue ribbon from the French ship Normandie. All of this material is from that trip. Included are 2 third class cabin plans, 2 third class passenger lists, 2 landing arrangements, 7 postcards of RMS Queen Mary, embarkation arrangements, first, tourist and 3rd class luncheon menus from August 22, 2 pieces of stationery, ... morebreakfast menu for August 23, Dinner menu for August 22, 2 guides to tourist accommodations, 2 August 19, 1936 lists of tourist class passengers, brochure pictures of tourist class dining room, bar, swimming pool, stateroom, nightclub, Austin Reed haberdashery shop, smoke room, a race card and13 vintage black and white photos of the exterior of the ship in dock taken by my grandfather, a professional photographer. Since all of these items came from one scrapbook of this historic crossing of the Atlantic by R.M.S. Queen Mary, I wanted to sell them all together. Some pieces are still mounted on scrapbook pages, and some show the outlines of pins and paperclips, all are in good to very good condition. A pretty pitcher commemorating the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. The portraits of the King& Queen are very well done. The picther is decorated all over with purple flowers(looks like violets) and has an embossed design of flowers on tall stems all around the bottom of the pitcher. The top edge is nicely sculpted with gold gilt trim. It is 6.25 inches high. 6.25 inches from tip of spout to the handle and 2.5 inches in diameter. This pitcher was made in Bavaria which was not unusual for commemoratives at this time especially when they wanted a fine piece and this is a fine piece. There are no cracks, chips or repairs. There is minor loss to the gold gilt trim consistent with the age of this piece(101 yrs old) All questions are welcomed and will be answered promptly. The pictures are an honest representation of condition. ... moreEvery effort is made to carefully pack and protect your purchase in shipment. This auction is for a Lovely Antique Pair of Commemorative Cups made by Royal Doulton of England for the Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. One cup is in very good condition. Especially for its age. There is a VERY TINY fleabite(see last photo) in the rim but no chips or cracks or repairs. Th e other cup has several tight hairlines(see photos 10 and 11) Both cups have crazing as is common for pieces of this vintage. The cups are tan in color and are beautifully decorated with images of the new king and queen and the year. The cups are 3 3/4 inches tall and 3 3/8 inches across. Both has the Royal Doulton backstamp. I only ship within the contiguous US and only accept PayPal. Please check my other auctions. Up for auction is an antique commemorative 8 1/2" plate. It's decorated with the portraits of Queen Mary and King George V. There's a little bit of wear to the gold on the rim. Which you can see in photo's#5-7. There is also a very tight, hairline crack, which you can see in photo's#3 and 8. Otherwise, this plate is in great condition. Dates back to c. 1911. Please take a moment to look at my other auctions. I will be listing another commemorative plate, featuring another royal family. If you have any questions. Please email me and I will try to get back to you the same day. I combine shipping and ship worldwide.
