A beautiful vintage silvered Art Deco medal of St Christopher. 6-sided, with a 1930s car on the reverse. This is a lovely medal featuring Saint Christopher. The patron saint of travellers, on one side, carrying the infant Jesus across the water, with the sun's rays pictured behind them in typical Art Deco style. On the reverse is a 1930s car travelling through mountains. Both sides exquisitely designed to a very high quality. It is possible that this is silver, as there is a mark on the bail, but I am not sure what this is, so I am listing it as a silver plated medal. Size is 15mm across, just over 1/2 inch) and 1.80 gm in weight. There is a jump ring in the bail, and the whole medal is in excellent condition. Great portrayal of a popular saint.
This is a lovely little silvered medal showing Notre Dame de Salette on both sides. On one side with her head in her hands, crying, and on the other talking to two children, one with a stick, and a dog. The Lady has a crown-type headdress. Notre Dame de Salette is the name given to the Virgin Mary when she appeared to two children on 19 September 1846 in a village called La Salette-Fallavaux. In the Isere region of France. The vision of the Virgin Mary is said to have come to two children, Maximin and Melanie, while they were looking after cows: the lady was seen in a flash of light with her head in her hands, crying. She told them she had wonderful news and talked to them amongst other things about the importance of praying the rosary, respecting the Sabbath day and believing in their faith. The children were not believed initially and put ... morethrough difficult tests by both church and lay people to make them say that the vision had not happened. Even the famous Cure d’Ars became involved. And said that the little boy had told him that he had not seen the visions, but afterwards Maximin said that he had not said this and continued to believe in what he had seen. Eventually in 1851 their visions were declared by the Church to have taken place, though not without controversy. There is also a sanctuary named after the apparition. La Salette is in the old province of Dauphine. And the sanctuary(along with several others) is claimed to be the second most importance place of pilgrimage after Lourdes. At 1800 metres high above the village of Corps, it is between Mont Planeau and the slopes of the Gargas and Chamoux mountains. The medal is just ½ inch high including the bail(1 cm) And the bail is marked with an oval punch mark which is the mark of the maker, though it is difficult to say what the marks are. There is a loop ring in the bail. And the whole medal is in good condition: quite a rare find.
A lovely Art Nouveau medal of the Sacred Heart of Jesus with St Margaret Mary Alacoque on the reverse. Showing the saint kneeling in front of a vision of Jesus. The obverse shows Jesus displaying his Sacred Heart. With the French saint Marguerite Marie Alacoque on the reverse in her nun’s cell, kneeling at a vision of Jesus. Around the edge are the words“Voice ce coeur qui a tant aime les hommes” Here is the heart which so loved man) The medal measures 2 cm high including bail(7/8ths inch) and weighs 2.8 gm. It is possibly silver. As it has a lozenge on the bail, but there are no marks on it so I can’t confirm this. It has a wonderful soft patina and has obviously been well-loved. St Marguerite was a nun and mystic who promoted devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in its modern form. She was born in 1647 near Autun. Which is now in the Saone ... moreet Loire, in Burgundy, and from childhood preferred prayer and silence to play. She was ill with rheumatic fever for many years as a child. But when she made a vow to the Blessed Virgin to devote herself to religious life she was apparently restored to perfect health. She had many visions of Jesus and at 23 years old she entered the nearby convent at Paray-le-Monial in 1671 to become a nun. In the convent she received several revelations of the Sacred Heart. The first on 27 December 1673, and the final one 18 months later. These visions included instructions from Jesus to spend a Holy Hour to meditate on his sufferings every week, which was later absorbed into Catholic practice. She was not able to convince everyone of the authenticity of her visions but in 1683 her Mother Superior. Who supported her, named her as her assistant and two years later a chapel was built at Paray-le-Monial in honour of the Sacred Heart. After Margaret Mary's death in 1690, the devotion to the Sacred Heart was promoted by the Jesuits, but not officially recognised until 75 years afterwards. Pope Leo XII pronounced her Venerable in 1824. And Pope Pius IX declared her Blessed in 1864. She was c
This is a nice vintage pendant of Saint Teresa or Sainte Thérèse of Lisieux. Signed Fr. M Bernard under the cut-out style portrait of the saint. The medal shows her in the“ Thérèse aux roses” pose created from a photograph by her sister Celine. Holding a bunch of roses and a crucifix. The portrait is based on the sculptures by Father Marie-Bernard which were created from the 1920s onwards. The reverse is blank. There is a jump ring in the bail. Saint Teresa's image is always connected with roses. As she prophesied"After my death I will let fall a shower of roses" Teresa Martin was born in 1873 and joined the Carmelite nuns along with several of her sisters. She died of consumption at the young age of 24 in 1897. She was beatified in 1923 and canonised in 1925. So the medal is probably some time after that ... moredate as she is pictured with a halo. The medal, which measures 1 and 1/4 inches high including bail(3 cm) weighs 4.2 gm. There is a raised triangular mark on the bail, which is possibly the foundry or the maker's mark. There is a little wear to the raised parts of the medal; not unusual for a well-loved vintage pendant. Thérèse of Lisieux is the patron saint of aviators. Florists, illness and missions and in 1944 Pope Pius XII named her co-patroness of France alongside Joan of Arc. The basilica of Lisieux dedicated to St Teresa is one of the most-visited places of pilgrimage after Lourdes. And this is a special souvenir item, probably created there.
A lovely little vintage French silvered pendant medal of St Joseph and Jesus. With a lily, representing purity, on the reverse. The medal comes with a small gift box(see photo 3) The medal depicts Joseph holding the child Jesus. In typical Art Nouveau style, with the words FRANCE and a raised poincon mark(possibly maker's mark or silver plate mark) on the bail. It comes with a small jump ring. The silvering on the medal is in excellent condition for a medal of this age. With little visible wear. It is 1.5 cm high including the bail and 1.3 cm across, 5/8th inch and half an inch) and it weighs 1.3 gm including jump ring. A very nice little item to add to a bracelet or wear as a pendant.
A beautiful little late 19th/early 20th century Art Nouveau brooch with the Virgin Mary in the centre. Featuring leafy scrolls and stars. The style is Art Nouveau/Belle Epoque and the portrait of the Virgin is similar to others which are found on medals of this era. Though I don't know the artist on this one. The scrolls around the sides and centre finish in a trefoil design, and two stars, four circles and two oval points are highlighted in rose tone gilding. There is a small scratch to the gilding on the bottom left hand circle, so they are not solid gold, but it is possible that the brooch is silver, though there are no marks to indicate this. The original pin has broken off the hinge(see photos) and has been replaced by an ordinary bent pin- I think this could be put right by a good jeweller and would be worth doing as it is such ... morea pretty object. It has an old-fashioned C-catch. The size of the brooch is approximately one inch square(2.5 cm) and it weighs 5.4 gm. Lovely collector's item.
Lovely little silvered French medal inscribed“Snr de N.D. du Mai” Souvenir of Notre Dame of the May) From the chapel of Our Lady of the May, in Provence, showing a crowned Mary holding Jesus and emanating light. This beautiful little pendant medal comes from the region in Provence known as the Foret de Six-Fours. In the Var region, which overlooks the Cote d’Azur. Towards the beginning of the 14 th century. There was a“pharo” or beacon which was lit to warn the people of the area that pirate ships were offshore. This was built on the top of the Montagne de Sicie. And the number of fires lit indicated the number of ships that were seen. A tower was constructed in 1589 along with a cabin for the protection of the guardians of the beacon. When this was struck by lightning in 1625. The guardian escaped injury and the local monks placed a cross ... morethere in thanks for his life. A few years later the first chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, known as Notre Dame de Bonne Garde or La Bonne Mere, was constructed. She is also known as Notre Dame du Mai. As inscribed on this little pendant. Over the years processions have been held to the top of the mountain to commemorate important events. And a cross was erected there in 1933 inscribed“O Crux Ave” In 1948 the mountain was the scene of an aviation accident involving a Dakota which was carrying mail from Cairo to London. In which all 6 British passengers and crew were killed. The reverse. Which has the inscription, also shows a flower which looks something like a buttercup. The medal is marked“France” on the bail, and is in very good condition. It is 5/8 th inch high(1.5 cm) including bail. Has a jump ring, and weighs 1.1 gm. There is a maker’s mark in a raised triangle on the bail and it could be silver. But as I can't see any punch marks I think it is probably silvered on base metal. Would be suitable either as a pendant on a chain or on a charm bracelet. dhep.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk%601d72f%2Bishm%3Ed%7Fhep-146e92166c3-0x10a-

A nice little vintage silvered medal from France celebrating the Nativity with Jesus in the manger under the star of Bethlehem on one side and a cross with lilies on the other. The medal weighs 2.7 gm including bail ring and measures 5/8ths inch high. There are no maker's marks on it but the silver plate is in very good condition. Lovely item for a Christmas gift or to keep in your own collection.
An excellent silvered brass medal of St Benoit(Benedict) Signed by famous 20th century medallist Fernand Py. This is not the modernist design of some of Py's St Benedict medals, but a more traditional head and shoulders version of the Saint. It is possibly silver. But there are no marks on it, so it is either silver on brass or silver with some gilding, as there are gold-coloured highlights which can be seen on the photos. On the obverse of the medal is a hooded Saint Benedict holding a staff with a shield on the other side, which features his cross, two fleurs de lys and St Benedict's staff. Around the portrait are the words S. Benedictus Monachorum Patriacha, St Benedict, father of the monks) with PAX at the bottom of the medal, and the signature"F Py" to the left. On the reverse is the cross of St Benedict or Benoit with ... morethe inscriptions CSSML(Crix Sacra Sit Mihi Lux– May the Holy Cross be my light) and NDSMD– Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux(May the Dragon(devil) never be my Master) And around the sides the words of the exorcism- VRSNS M V SMQLIVB(Vade Retro Satana. Nunquam Suade Mihi Vana. Sunt Mala Quae Libas. Ipse Venena Bibas(Get Away Satan. Your Vanities will never tempt me. You are offering me Evil. Drink the Poison yourself) At the top is inscribed IHS, and below that CSPB- Crux Sancti Patris Benedici– the Cross of the Holy Father Benedict. The Saint Benedict(or Benoit. The French version) medal is one of the oldest used by Catholics and has been used to ward off the devil and other spiritual dangers, particularly poisoning, storms and pestilence, since the early middle ages, and it was formally approved for use by Pope Benedict XIV in 1741. The letters on the back of the medal were finally deciphered in 1647, their meaning having been lost, when they were said to have been found in a manuscript in Bavaria. This manuscript contains the first recorded use of the exorcism Vade Retro Satana(Step Back, Satan) St Benedict was born in Nursia. Umbria(Italy) and died in 543 aged 63. He was canonised
French Silvered Bronze Medal Pendant Ovide Yencesse 1914 WW1 Nurses Wounded This is an antique French medal depicting a nurse bandaging the head of a wounded soldier. It is scribed‘POUR NOS BLESSES’ for our wounded) and issigned‘O. YENCESSE’ Thehe reverse inscribed‘LE DEVOIR’ Duty) and dated‘1914-1915’ above a Geneva cross. Circumscribed‘AUX INFIRMIÈRES DE FRANCE’ to the Nurses of France) This medal may have been awarded to nurses for devotion to tending the war-wounded, its form suggest to us that it may possibly have been produced for a fund-raising‘journée’ in 1915 and given to those who made significant donations. Ovide Yencesse, 1869-1947, is a French well known symbolist sculptor and medallist, whose bronze depicting the martyrdom of Serbia is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. A beautiful Art Nouveau silvered uniface French medal in a gilded(gold filled) claw brooch setting. Depicting Saint Christopher with Jesus on his shoulder, signed FP. Around the portrait of the saint are the words"Regarde St Christophe puis va t'en rassure" See St Christopher and go comforted on your way) St Christopher looks up to the child Jesus on his shoulder as he clasps his staff. Which is sprouting leaves at the top. The medal is signed"FP" on the right at the base of the portrait; however. I cannot trace this particular engraver from the Belle Epoque era in France. The medal and brooch frame are in good condition for age. There is an old fashioned c-clasp pin on the pin. Which is slightly bent but still closes. The frame is gilded or gold plate, which has age-related wear on the pin and the tips of the claws(see ... morephotos) The size of the brooch is 2.5 cm(just under 1 inch) across, and it weighs 4.4 gm. A very nice piece for a collection or to take on your travels.
