ANTIQUE MEXICAN RETABLO OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE This antique retablo once belonged to the Valentine Museum in Richmond Va. I researched it and believe it was part of their Mexican exhibition in the 1920's. It is hand painted in oil on tin. It is unusual in that it has a typical Virgin as the central scene surrounded by saints and scenes in cartouche form around her. I believe this is an oldie and dates to the earlier 1800's. Condition is as shown. It has holes punched into it from mounting, has some rust, more so at the base, some loss of paint and some breaks on the edges. Not bad for its age and use. Measures 11 3/4 by 9 3/4 inches. This picture is very old. signs of aging on the oval frame. The Virgin of Guadalupe is centered in the picture with black paint for an outline of the red, silver, and gold foil. The actual face is an old picture of the virgin, and four small ovals surround smaller pictures of the vision. Very unusual to find the foil picture done with this subject. Green and red reverse paint at the top and bottom. And some age places in the frame.

This is an antique Mexican retablo(or lamina) on old tin. It's a nice larger size. Measuring about 10" wide and 14" tall. It shows the classic Latin-American religious image of Mary. The Virgin of Guadalupe. The painting is well done in a great folk art style, with nice detail and color. We believe this dates to the early 1900's. The piece is unframed and has three old hand-punched holes at the top for hanging. This is in good condition. It does show its age- a 3/4" piece of the bottom right corner has chipped off. A limited number of 2 inch bronze medals were minted in Rome, and used as gifts for wealthy Catholic patrons. That medal helped the Bishop(Francisco de Aguiar y Seijas) fund the Building of the new Basilica from 1682-1708; one of those medals from my mother’s collection.
