The map is in two pieces at the seam where it was bound at one time. The map is not laid down in the matting. Just loose. The saran wrap is no longer over the map as took off to examine the map more closely. There are no rips or tears in the map with the exception of a 1 inch one on the border, just under Portugal and between the numbers 8 and 9. There is also an impression in the Mediterranean Sea, just above the"T" in Mediterranean. Also, another small tear on the border right border of the map between 38 and 39. The map is 23" across by 17" tall. The map is identified as being hand colored in the letter of authenticity. The map was also attributed to 1871 at the auction. But I do not see that year on the map or the letter of authenticity. I suspect the authenticity labels go back 25-30 years ago, but you be the judge. The map shows Spain starting from the north at its border with Gallia(France) and continuing to the south to the straights of Hercules(today Gibraltar) This map was taken out of a damaged copy of the Long's Classical Atlas(see the last three photos) Which is not part of this sale. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol, Connecticut on March 20, 1792.
