This is a truly lovely eyecatching oil lamp. The Hinks' Duplex system 2 functions perfectly. When I bought it was set up with the wick but I have never used it. The chimney is a replacement it has Griffin brand and marked foreign on it. The lampshade I am told was original but I dont know its certainly from the right era. I bought this about 15 years from an Antique Shop. I have loved it dearly but I am downsizing and changing styles so there is now no place for it. This item will go by courier or can be collected. Beautiful Victorian Hinks & Sons Ceramic Oil Banquet Lamp, Original Glass Shade
Beautiful Victorian Hinks and Sons Ceramic Oil Banquet Lamp with Original Acid Etched Glass Shade This lovely Victorian oil/kerosene lamp by Hicks and Sons is all original from its base to its duplex burners to its acid etched. Floral design, glass shade. This example of a vintage English banquet lamp has a commanding, and yet quietly elegant, presence. The lamp stands over 23.5" tall by over 6" wide at the base; the piece is quite substantial and heavy probably due to the heavy ceramic, weighted metal base. The naturalistic, calming colors of blue, green, ochre and cream in the ceramic portion(Doulton? complement the quiet elegance of the acid etched floral glass shade. The ceramic base almost has an arabesque design look to it with some elements of aesthetic(nature) movement. As you can see from the photos, some of the ceramic ... moredesign is raised in certain portions of the motif giving it an embossed, three dimensional look. The middle ceramic component is seated on a footed brass base; the oil font sits down in a brass holder seated in the ceramic portion. The lamp is marked by the makers in the following places: on the brass neck near the two wick turners(Hinks and Son's Patent" on the end of the wick turners(Best British Maker F" with what looks like a sun logo in the middle) on the very bottom of the metal base(Hinks and Son's.468" This lamp is in what I consider excellent to very good condition, especially considering its age and utilitarian purpose. The brass footed base has some indications of age such as darkening and pitting; I could find no cracks, no chips and no imperfect areas in the ceramic portion. The only imperfections in this over 100 year old lamp can be attributed to age and use and are the following: several flakes, tiny chips in the glass in the bottom rim of the glass shade; these flakes cannot be seen while the shade is resting in its brass holder. The lamp is of the style often called a sideboard lamp. Usually squat lamps with a low centre of gravity, likely the height of the sideboard negates the need for a column. Lamp is unmarked apart from a model number on one of the feet(see image) I have seen this model before several times and they were both stamped with the'Taylor, Tunnicliffe& Cº' lozenge. Dimensions; lamp stands 17" tall to the top of the chimney and is around 7" across the base. Condition; good condition for age(c1880-1890) Some crazing but luckily mostly out of sight(underside of bowl near feet and inside the bowl, mostly never seen areas) burner could do with a clean but appears to be in working order, one retaining nut on the leg of the burner missing, surprised one remains as they are usually both gone) absolutely no restoration! A genuine original early bayonet fit burner for a duplex oil lamp by JAMES HINKS& SON in very good condition. Later models included a snuffer mechanism. Fitted with it's original push on 4 inch fit shade carrier. The white ceramic winders read'JAMES HINKS& SON' and'DUPLEX PATENT' There is one tiny stress crack below the gallery which we have attempted to show. It is very small. Weight is 270 grams. Restored. An eye-catching ... morehigh quality Hinks oil lamp from the mid to late Victorian period. The lamp is raised on a black stepped ceramic plinth with time worn green baize to the base. The brass base is pressed with a distinctly art nouveau pattern with a beaded edge. The edge of the brass pressing is brightly polished with the remainder bronzed. The fluted bronzed column is punctuated by bands of polished brass and is finished with a heavy polished brass inset threading collar that connects with the pressed glass fonts screw fitting. The clear glass font has 12 sliced facings. A futher heavy brass collar stamped"Hinks& Son's Patent. connects the burner. The burner is of duplex design with single rod and two adjuster knobs. It is marked at the end of the wick adjustment Hink's No. 2 Duplex and at the top of the burner Hinks& Son Patent. It has a registration number 65891. The oil lamp retains its original glass reservoir and ornate brass hanging basket. Condition: Overall in need of some tlc. The glass funnel is missing. The mechanism is still and would benefit from belng cleaned and serviced. The glass reservoir is grubby. But has no cracking. The brass hanging basket does have some damage. Here we have an original Victorian Duplex oil lamp made by Hinks& Son and sold through a Newcastle company called Emley& Sons. They appear to have been mainly known for their marble, granite, tiles etc.but had items such as heating, ventilation, artistic wrought iron and bronze etc. always in stock. The fount is faceted crystal. The base has an embossed brass skirt and glazed terracotta plinth. The chimney is an original Hinks stamped example. A rare survivor. The burner is a Hinks& Son's Patent Duplex with gallery raising lever and ... moreextinguisher. It has the retailer'Emley& Sons, Newcastle on Tyne' on the winder. The collar is stamped Hinks& Son's Patent as is the bridge between the slots on the blaze-cone. Dimensions; 20 3/4" tall to top of the chimney. 5 1/8" across fount. Condition; some tarish to the brass skirt and a small nibble from an edge of a facet on the fount and a little reinforcing solder to a lug on the collar(see images) Nothing that really stands out or detracts in any way.
