Antique Ohio Valley salt glazed stoneware wide mouth jug
This salt glazed jug appears to have been hand thrown and kiln fired. It is slightly misshaped with one side being a little flat as though it was laid on its side while the clay was still wet. It was found in a Southern Ohio homestead near Zanesville. Ohio. The jug stands 10.75 inches and is about 21 inches around. The grey toned salt glaze has an orange peel texture, the handle is hand applied. There are imperfections in the glaze, due to the primitive process, used as shown in the pictures, but no cracking. The clay exposed on the unglazed bottom is a pale pink color. There is some minor chipping around the top-please take a look at the pictures. This jug is a true piece of early Americana.

Description: This 19 th century stoneware jug is approx. 7 5/8” high x 6 ½” wide with a 2 ¼” wide mouth. The jug holds approx. 10 cups of liquid to the rim. It was hand thrown and glazed in a chocolate brown. There are no maker’s marks but has the characteristics of an early primitive glazed piece. It was purchased at the Brimfield Antique Market many years ago. The piece has a tight 7/8” line on the lip. A 3/16” chip to the base along with typical flakes and firing pops. Antique Brown Bee Hive Crockery Wide Mouth Pickling/Canning Jug. Before refrigeration these old jugs were the best tools for preserving the food supplies. They were used to pickle and can fruits and vegetables for winter use. This 7" tall by 6 1/2" diameter jug is in great condition for it's age. There is a tiny bit of what looks like paint splatter. It just looks like texture in the pictures. A single chip on the inside of the lip is the extent of the damage. Also in the pictures. Thank you for your time.

The jug has some flea bites which get slightly bigger near the spout and base. One of the bigger flea bites can be found on the outside of the handle near the spout.The inner top of the spout has a medium sized dent in it near the handle. Rare Antique 1800's 3 Gallon Jug Dark Brown Salt Glazed Stoneware Wide Mouth!!
Rare Antique 1800's 3 Gallon Salt Glazed Stoneware Jug This is a rare opportunity to own a very old 3 Gallon salt glazed stoneware handled jug with a wide mouth in a very dark brown. I'm estimating 1800's. But it may be older-look at the pictures and judge for yourself. It has a primitive"3" near the top. No other marks. The top is slightly darker than the bottom. 14-1/2 inches high and has a 9-1/2" diameter. The mouth is almost 4" across. Condition: Very good given it's age. Handle is intact and solid. No chips around the mouth and only minor chips around the top edge of the body. The top has some lighter color in a very few small spots-may be paint drips or an old attempt to touch it up. Regardless, it only adds to the patina of the jug. The bottom has some damage as can be seen from the last 3 photos, ... morebut it appears to be age related. There is the start of a hairline crack near the bottom, but the jug appears to be solid and should be around for a very long time-see last photo. See high resolution photos for more! This is a great old jug and would make a wonderful addition to anyone's home! Here's an early piece thats had more than most lifetimes in use. It's somewhat hard to find as most were very utilitarian. Being in constant use and thereby susceptible to damage. This one survived but it's barely limping along. Broken handle and leaking bottom. Too much incorrect lifting and dropping too hard. Usually only the whiskey jugs with smaller finger handles and small mouths had better survival rates. We can imagine what happened if someone dropped one of those. So, here's a great piece for the collector who never saw one in as good a shape as this one. It's for display and definitely an attention getter. Most collectors won't have one. Nice Vintage Antique 1 Gallon Wide Mouth 2-Tone Brown Glaze Stoneware Whisky Jug
This is a nice vintage brown glazed stoneware jug with wide mouth(3 3/8" across the top. Opening is 2 5/8" The glaze is fantastic; smooth, shiny, and even with large areas of yellow/green discoloration that happened during firing in the kiln. It is in excellent condition with absolutely no chips or cracks, just a few light scuffs and scratches. This piece displays beautifully. It measures 9 3/4" H x 7 1/4" in diameter. Antique Red Wing Minnesota Stoneware Marked 1 Gallon Wide Mouth Brown Whisky Jug
This is a nice antique bottom marked Red Wing/ Minnesota Stoneware wide mouth whisky jug with dark brown glaze in good. Clean condition. There are absolutely no cracks, but there is a chip on the handle that was repaired with a hard clay-like material, shown close-up in the photos. The glaze is shiny and even with a few very light scuffs and scratches. It measures 8" H x 7 3/4" in diameter. It will be packed securely and insured during shipping.

Hawthorn Pottery Wide Mouth Jug
A Hawthorn. PA pottery company well-known for its line of stoneware for home use. Jugs and crocks of all sizes and types, but wide-mouth was uncommon. Some collectors will have to review their stock to find they don't have one. I would guess this is about 1 gallon. There are no cracks or hairlines.
