Vintage James Kent Blue Willow Toby Jug
Although not marked. This 5 1/2" Toby Jug was made by James Kent in the late 19th century. The jug has an underglaze decoration in the Blue Willow pattern on the body. The hat, hair, pants, feet and clothes are painted underglaze in grey, reddish brown, brown, light blue and black. The jug is in wonderful condition with no repairs or crazing, and it displays beautifully. On the bottom of the jug, front facing, are are two small chips. A few white spots show through on the prim of the hat, but these have glazing over them so I believe them to be flaws in the firing. On the side of the handle, their is a small raised white bump, which I also believe to be a maker's flaw. This piece is fresh to the market from an estate, and shows a fair amount of dust. In this auction we have one piece from a HUGE collection of Royal Doulton ... morecharacter jugs that we acquired from a private collector. This item is a small Royal Doulton Toby jug. The Falconer, from the Williamsburg Collection. The Falconer wears a sporting cap of turquoise and white and black stripes. His fur collar tops a back cloak. The handle on the left side is a stand on which rests the falcon, grey feathers on top and a white breast. His right wing extends over the Falconer’s cap. It is in EXCELLENT condition! There are no chips, cracks or crazing. It has the Royal Doutlon Mark on the bottom with four registration numbers. Falconry is a tool for hunting dated back for centuries dated from the Chinese[2000 BC] The Falconer removes a young falcon and trains to fly when release from his wrist killing the quarry but leaving it untouched. In England, Henry VIII found it a favorite pastime. The Falconers modeler was Max Henk and it was produced by Royal Doulton from 1960 through 1991. It measures approximately 4" high.
