Primitive Antique Stoneware Jug Old estate find. This is a nice Primitive Antique Stoneware Jug with blue cobalt decoration. applied handle and early glaze. The jug is marked"N. A. White& Sons, UTICA, NY" The jug is in very good condition no chips or cracks- there is some roughness at the top rim where it looks like the glaze is missing. Otherwise, just some minor glazing flaws. Great zig-zag tree design on the front in a dark cobalt blue. Design is very well done. Nice smaller stoneware jug in very good primitive antique condition. A tremendous 19thC. Cobalt Floral on this 2Gal. Jug from Upstate New York. The Cobalt-Washed stamp is crisp and clear; it reads: N.A. WHITE& SON. UTICA, N.Y. This mark was used from 1865-1886. There is a base chip, a stone pop, a ding and some roughness on the spout, and two kiln marks(to the left of the capacity stamp, and right side) otherwise excellent with no hairlines, cracks, repaired damage or restoration work. The included cork is firmly seated in the spout and appears original. Please see photos for complete details, close-ups and further description. Molded Stoneware BARDWELL'S ROOT BEER Canteen Crockery Jug. Attributed to the Whites Pottery. Utica, NY, late 19th century. Bristol-slip-glazed canteen with embossed advertising for"BARDWELL'S ROOT BEER" on one side. The reverse with relief elk scene. Cobalt highlights throughout. Wood and wire"bail handle" is missing. I spoke to the woman who donated this piece. She said that she removed the handle because it interfered with flower arrangements she placed in it! The handle is long gone. Sorry. Selling AS IS. Up for auction is a very nice jug in very good condition no cracks. A couple small nicks on top of the spout, two along the bottom one is factory glazed over. On the side of jug is a factory gouged mark with some excess clay see pic's, Jug must have been a lamp at one time the hole was fixed at one time very nicely done, some staining and stone pops. Beautiful flower very dark, shiny and smooth Normal ware and tear. Factory flaws, blemishes& flakes* If there are any questions. Please ask! From the Gorgeous Cobalt Design to the Very Strong Orange Peel Texture on the Shoulders. And The Nice Old Cork That Could Be The Original. Incised Lettering Reads: N. A. WHITE& SON UTICA. NY 2* This mark was used from 1867 to 1876* Orange Peel Surface Created when at just the right moment. The potter opened the kiln and scattered salt over the jug. 13 ½" Tall 8 ¾" Base Diameter Weight = 9 ½ Pounds* Condition This large beautiful jug is in great condition. The handle does have a hairline crack that could be a stress point when it was fired. The top edge of the mouth has a small flat sliver chip that is barely noticeable. There is a fleabite chip on the bottom ... moreleft edge. These are shown clearly in the last three photos. There is a kiln firing mark just above the cobalt decoration. There are a few small scratches on the cobalt decoration that could have happened during firing? Overall this a gorgeous huge jug in great vintage condition. Up for bid is a beautiful 2 Gallon Cobalt Blue Designed Stoneware Jug. Produced and Marked by N.A. White& Sons Utica NY This is the work of Nicholas White and his sons. William and Charles who ran the Whites of Utica family pottery from 1865-1886(William Ketchum, Jr. American Stoneware, pp. 70-71) Two Gallon Jug measures 14" Tall and is 8.5" in diameter at the base. Crock is in very good condition without any cracks and with only a few light chips on the spout.
