Black& White Size. 3 3/4” x 4 3/4” This is an original vintage 1916 halftone print of Two Bellarmines of the 17th Century. Background: Bellarmine. Or bartmann(bearded man) jars originated in Germany, back in the sixteenth century. Bellarmines take their name from a particularly fearsome Catholic Inquisitor, Robert Bellarmine, who persecuted Protestants, and labelled as a demon by his victims. These jars. Or bottles were made from stoneware clay that was glazed with salt and embossed with severe bearded faces designed to ward off evil. As the jug’s popularity spread. All sorts of notions began attaching themselves to it. Liquids kept in it could heal the sick. Witchcraft could be warded ... moreoff by keeping one buried under the house…and so much more!
