The swept spout has a signature Charles Meigh mask underneath which adds much decorative appeal. The principle motifs are monkeys dressed in capes and jackets. With Indian headdresses and feathers in the caps. They seem to be preoccupied playing card games and smoking their pipes. There are leaves that swirl around the top third of the jug. While fish scales dominate the background where the monkeys are playing. The bottom edge of the jug has shells in relief to further enhance the design. The top of the jug is deeply scalloped, culminating in the raised spout. This is a beautiful quality piece, and one that would enhance any collection. Although this jug is not marked ... moreit is readily identified as one by this talented and gifted potter. All in all. This is a highly decorative and desirable Charles Meigh jug. The jug measures 8” high to the top of the scroll on the handle. It is 8-1/4” at its widest point. Striking antique 1866 relief molded stoneware Alloa jug by William Brownfield

With a circle around it impressed with W. B. for William Brownfield) COBRIDGE(his location at that time) 24(probably the size number) and ALLOA(the pattern) This is the best looking Alloa jug I have ever seen, with excellent brown shadings and bark patterns giving it a natural wood look, topped by well done hop vines and barley around the neck. The jug is 7 inches tall, 5.5 inches at its widest point, and in excellent condition. I'm including the pewter lid(which is off) and one of the pewter pins is still in its pivot hole on the jug. An Alloa pattern jug is pictured and described on page 102 of the book A Collector's Guide to Nineteenth-Century Jugs. ... moreAgain, this is a very nice looking specimen. Circa 1855 William Brownfield "Swiss" relief molded jug with goat's head spout
We are listing this very nice marked William Brownfield relief moulded stoneware jug in the Swiss pattern. Circa 1855. The Swiss pattern is a wood-grained barrel form with a goat's head spout(this one also has the two holes to hold a metal lid, but the jug does not appear to have ever had one) A picture and description of a Swiss jug with a metal lid can be seen on page 85 of the book A Collector's Guide to Nineteenth-Century Jugs. The mark on the bottom of both this jug and the one in the Jug book is the same raised semi-circle banner with Swiss impressed in it, above a Staffordshire knot containing the impressed letters W B, and impressed numbers- 30 on this jug, and 24 in the Jug book. On this jug there is also a separate incised circled X over to one edge on the bottom. The jug is 7.5 inches tall, 5.5 inches at its widest point, ... moreand is in very good condition. Antique mid1800s relief molded smokers and drinkers jug
We are listing this mid1800s relief molded jug which was probably made by one of the Staffordshire potteries. But could have also been made in America, Ireland or Scotland(it is unmarked) It features three drinkers/smokers(which are not the typical versions) and two trees, along with other decorative touches. The work is not all that well defined, giving the piece a rather rustic look. There is a very ornate cursive monogram(which I believe is TH) painted on one side of the neck. The jug is almost 7.5 inches tall, a little over 7 inches at its widest point, and in very good condition with only a couple of very small rough spots on high points(see the close up pictures) We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. Circa 1845 Copeland relief molded The Vintage parian stoneware jug
We are listing this Copeland relief molded jug with putti harvesting grapes. Making wine, and then indulging in the wine. This pattern was known as The Vintage and was made around 1845. The jug is almost 7.5 inches tall, 6 inches at its widest point, and is marked on the bottom with a raised cartouche impressed with COPELAND over a number that appears to be 18. On page 73 of the book A Collector's Guide to Nineteenth-Century Jugs there is a picture and description of a smaller version of this jug which is marked with a number 19. The jug is almost translucent, very visually interesting, displays well, and is in very good condition with only relatively minor flaws. There is a hairline which runs across the bottom and part way up one side, and a couple of other very short hairlines on the side of the handle and rear of the rim, but these ... moredo not detract from the look of this nice old piece(see the close up pictures) We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. English 1815-1835 Angels with Banner marked relief molded stoneware jug
We are listing this 1815-1835 English relief molded stoneware jug which is marked on the bottom with the raised Angels with Banner pad(also called the Angels pad) from that period. Impressed with the number 102(some experts have speculated that this mark may have been used by the H. R. Daniel partnership) On page 106 of the book An Illustrated Guide to British Jugs there is a picture and discussion of this mark. The jug is decorated with floral designs, is almost 4.5 inches tall, and is almost 6 inches at its widest point. The jug itself is in excellent condition, however the handle has been cracked across the middle and reglued(see the closeup picture) The handle is quite stable, the jug displays well, and this is a rarely seen mark from 200 years ago. Striking bright blue glazed mid 1800s Arabian Nights relief molded jug (Alcock?)
We are listing this very interesting mid 1800s bright blue glazed relief molded jug in the Arabian Nights pattern created by Samuel Alcock circa 1845. I am only familiar with lavender and white Alcock versions and the mark on the bottom of the jug is not one I am familiar with- a cartouche with the impressed name STONE over No 2. But the jug appears to exactly match Alcock's jug in design. The jug is almost 7 inches tall, over 5 inches at its widest point, and in very good condition(there is one small flake on the base rim- see the close up picture) A very striking jug. Which is rarely seen. The jug is decorated with floral designs, is 5 inches tall, and over 7 inches at its widest point. The piece displays very well and is generally good condition, but there is a hairline down one side of the rim, some separation cracking around the bottom of the handle(which is quite stable) and some rubbing of the glaze on one side of the handle(see the close up pictures) Still this is a rare jug which displays very well. Rare 1832-1845 Samuel & John Burton highly glazed relief molded stoneware jug
We are listing this striking highly glazed relief molded stoneware jug by the rarely seen makers Samuel and John Burton(only in business between 1832 and 1845) This impressive jug is almost 7.5 inches tall. 8.5 inches at its widest point, and marked on the bottom with a raised cartouche impressed with S& J B over No 6. A smaller, cracked, and gilded, white version of the jug is pictured and described on page 162 of the book An Illustrated Guide to British Jugs. There is a strainer inside the listed jug and a lip around the inside, so at one time there was some type of lid for it(the other version of the jug had no lid either, so I'm not sure what it would have looked like) This jug is quite attractive and in excellent condition- there is a tiny flake of glaze off the strainer, and another tiny flake of glaze off the body of the jug(see ... morethe close up picture) This is a very nice jug by a very rare maker. Very striking mid 1800s marked Copeland relief molded jug with unique handle
We are listing this very unusual mid 1800s Copeland relief molded jug. The designs on the elegantly shaped jug are very stylized flowers and it has a nicely braided handle and base. What makes it unusual is that the braided areas are brightly colored in alternating glaze colors of orange and blue on the base and orange and green on the handle(with gilding around the separate braids and along the top rim) It is marked on the bottom with a raised(fake) registration diamond over an impressed COPELAND mark. And an impressed letter T, an impressed number 18, and a hand painted number 9160. The jug is almost 10 inches tall, 5.5 inches at its widest point, and in good condition. There is some gilding and glaze loss, a thin hairline toward the bottom on one side, and a couple of surface rubs toward the top- but the jug displays very well. Antique Stoneware Relief Molded Jug, Birds & Flora 9"
The lovely jug is 9" high and 3 3/4" across the bottom. The white stoneware base was dipped in a green-gray slip that covers the inside as wll as the outside. The relief motif has a stippled background. A bird, flowers, and ferns. The design is on both sides. I do not particularly appreciate chips. But this one is in a place that can hardly be seen, and it aided me in my"how it's made" curiosity. The white base and thick slip was a surprise! Please look at the pictures for my best description. I accept PayPal only and will ship in one day after the payment is received. Payment must be made within 4 days after the auction ends. Thanks for looking!
Antique Relief Molded Pitcher - W B Cobridge "Cashmere"
This relief molded pitcher stands approximately 7 inches. The diameter of the base is approximately 2 3/4 inches. The color is a beautiful dove grey. As shown in the third photo. There is a chip on the top rim. There are other markings on the bottom other than the W B Cobridge Cashmere marking. This pitcher would make a beautiful antique shelf piece.
Very pretty mid to late 1800s relief molded white stoneware jug
We are listing this very pretty relief molded stoneware jug. Made in the mid to late 1800s(probably in England) The piece is unmarked, and I have not been able to identify the pattern, so I do not know the maker. It looks similar to jugs that Dudson and other English potters were making in the 1850s to 1870s. The jug is a little over 6 inches tall, 4.5 inches at its widest point, and very elegant looking with vertical designs overlying a stippled background. The piece is in excellent condition, with only a tiny separation line at the top join of the handle. This is a beautiful little jug- please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. Incredible 1850 T.J.&J. Mayer relief molded blue & white parian Birdnesting jug
We are listing this truly amazing 1850 relief molded blue and white parian Birdnesting jug by T. J. J. Mayer's Dale Hall Pottery in Longport. This design was a prize winner in the world famous 1851 Exhibition. And after that award the Mayers added that information to the bottom of their Birdnesting jugs(dating this piece to 1850) It is marked on the bottom with a stamped registration diamond for July 2, 1850, and a raised banner with No. 37 impressed in the main section and the number 36 impressed in the lower tail. The Birdnesting jug is a tour-de-force of creative design, and production craftsmanship. The entire jug is one tree stump with blue colored bark and white knots, and over that there are very high relief tableaus on the sides. One side shows a boy climbing a tree toward a bird nest with three chicks in it(and losing his hat ... morewhile getting snagged in the branches as he does it) and the other side shows the boy holding the nest in his hands while the mother bird circles overhead(with a worm in her beak) The two sides are joined by the handle in the form of a realistic tree limb with branches extending into the scenes on each side. The jug is 6.25 inches tall, 4 inches at its widest point, and in excellent condition. Given its extreme detail, deep relief, and branched handle, it is unbelievable that this jug has survived 165 years without any significant damage. There is one tiny flake on the underside of a branch to the left of the boy holding the nest(but it fits in with all the detailed knots, etc. on the branches) and you can feel a couple of very small areas of slight roughness on exposed edges. Please view the close up pictures and judge for yourself. This is a simply amazing piece. A slightly larger version of this jug(made after the 1851 Exhibition) is pictured and discussed on page 65 of A Collector's Guide to Nineteenth-Century Jugs. We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. The United Kingdom, and Canada. Shipping to the United Kingdom and Canada will be charg

Large striking 1845 Copeland "The Vintage" relief molded parian stoneware jug
We are listing this large striking 1845 relief molded parian stoneware jug in"The Vintage" pattern by W. T. Copeland. It is marked on the bottom with a raised cartouche impressed with COPELAND over an impressed single number(which I cannot decipher) The jug features eight putti harvesting grapes. Making wine, and drinking the wine. A much smaller version of this jug is pictured and described on page 73 of A Collector's Guide to Nineteenth-Century Jugs. The listed jug is a substantial 9 inches tall, 7 inches at its widest point, and displays very well. However, there is a long thin hairline which loops around from under the base below the handle and through the four putti toward the back of the jug(the jug is quite stable) There is also a small flake under the front rim, and another small flake off the bowl a putti is holding ... moreat the front of the jug. Very interesting 1830s Minton Foxes and Hounds relief molded stoneware jug
We are listing this very interesting 1830s Minton Foxes and Hounds relief molded stoneware jug. The jug is so named because it features a fox handle. Four high relief foxes on one side, and four high relief dogs on the other side, all set against a background of foliage and other design elements(you would be hard put to find a jug with more going on on the face of it) It is marked on the bottom with the raised cartouche with a cursive M at the bottom that Minton used on their stonewares at that time- in the banner within the cartouche is impressed No. 17, and above the cartouche is an impressed number 18. The jug is 7 inches tall, 5.25 inches at its widest point, and displays well. Because of the extremely high relief of the animals on the sides, and the delicate nature of the fox handle, Foxes and Hounds jugs are invariably damaged. This ... moreone is no exception- the fox on the handle is missing part of one ear, a dog is missing part of an ear(although it is hard to spot) one fox has lost most of his face, another fox his nose, and a third fox a part of an ear(again hard to spot) and there are two tiny flakes at the bottom of the base. All this sounds nasty, but the complex design means you only see most of it up close. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. A slightly larger version of this jug is pictured and described on page 55 of A Collector's Guide to Nineteenth-Century Jugs. We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. Very nice 1846 Copeland "Vintage" pattern relief molded parian stoneware jug
We are listing this beautiful 1846 Copeland relief molded translucent white parian stoneware jug in the Vintage pattern. This pattern features a grapevine trunk handle which then spreads to grapevines wandering around the jug(with a snail thrown in one branch) It is marked on the bottom with a raised cartouche impressed with COPELAND over the number 36. A smaller version of this jug is pictured and described on page 59 of A Collector's Guide to Nineteenth-Century Jugs. This is a very attractive piece- 4.5 inches tall. 4.5 inches at its widest point, and in excellent condition(there is a minuscule split inside the jug- see the closeup picture) When you put a light inside the jug, you can see how finely it is potted- the background areas are translucent, leaving the grapevines to stand out. Large early to mid 1800s glazed and gilded relief molded ceramic jug
We are listing this large early to mid 1800s shiny white glazed and gilded relief molded ceramic jug. On one side of the jug is a man wearing a country-type hat(this exact same figure was noted on two late 1700s Pratt-type jugs- see page 23 of A Collector's Guide to Nineteenth Century Jugs and page 1 of A Collector's Guide to Nineteenth Century Jugs Volume II) On the other side of the jug is a drinking scene with a woman and a man(who wears a Robin Hood-type hat) The balance of the jug is decorated with trees and leafy branches. Heavy gilding covers the rim and a trim band circling the jug above the figures. And there are additional gilded spots on the handle. The glaze and gilding features look just like a Jacob Petit piece I had, but there is no maker's mark on this one, so I still think it is an English jug. It is a large jug- ... morealmost 7.75 inches tall and 8.5 inches at its widest point- and it displays well. However, there is a crack across the base(repaired with staples in the style of that period) which runs up one side a couple of inches, and there is another crack by the handle which runs from the rim to down below the gilded trim band. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. This is a very nice looking jug. We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. The United Kingdom, and Canada. Very striking large white 1840s Hannibal relief molded stoneware jug
We are listing this very striking 1840s large white relief molded stoneware jug in what is commonly called the Hannibal pattern. The jug is covered on both sides with extensive scenes of battle including troops on top of large elephants(generally thought to be Hannibal and his army) In addition to the battle scenes there are rings of strange and complex figural decorative designs below the rim and above the base. And a serpent handle with heads at the top and bottom. The battle scenes are somewhat reminiscent of Meigh's Julius Caesar jug(but the sea serpents are a whole different genre) and to my knowledge no one has identified the maker of this pattern(the jug is only marked on the bottom with an inscribed"No. 3" It is 9 inches tall, 7 inches at its widest point, and in excellent condition. Please view the closeup pictures ... moreand judge for yourself. A much smaller green version of this jug from the Morpeth collection is pictured and described on page 38 of A Collector's Guide to Nineteenth Century Jugs. We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. The United Kingdom, and Canada. Shipping to the United Kingdom and Canada will be charged at cost. Payment must be made by Paypal within three days of the auction ending. Be sure to check out our other current and upcoming auctions of hundreds of antique and vintage objects in glass. Interesting 1852 relief molded stoneware jug with unique putti/cherub scenes
We are listing this interesting 1852 relief molded stoneware jug which shows groups of putti/cherubs at play on each side. With flowers hanging down above them. The putti/cherub scenes are rather unique to my knowledge, and appear to be from a period closer to 1800 since they are anatomically correct(typically fig leaves were added by the 1850s) The jug is marked on the bottom with a raised registration diamond for 1852, and an impressed number 30, but I have not been able to find the pattern name or maker for this piece. It is over 7 inches tall, over 5 inches at its widest point, and displays well with its unique and interesting scenes. However, there is a fairly large flake below the rim on one side, and two chips/flakes off the bottom edge. Still, a very interesting old jug. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself.
