Antique Douglass Clay Products Co Anomaly 1 Gallon Water Jug-Rare
This is an antique Douglass Clay Product Co 1 gallon water jug. The Douglass Clay Product Co in Los Angeles. CA operated from 1903-1910 when it was bought out by another company, but they continued to make vessels after this time, but apparently under that company's name. The clay products in the LA area were so good due to the exceptionally fine clay found in Southern California. This one has a logo for Douglass that we have not seen anywhere else. The jug also has anomalies that occurred in the manufacturing of the jug, making it doubly unique. There is a small hole in side of jug that someone tried to tape over. I have not removed this tape. There is a chip on top rim, several small chips in bottom edge, few chips on bottom and some coloring is coming off the top rim. The handle has a few small chips. I tried to photograph the defects, ... morebut feel free to ask for more photos if you'd like. Great decorating piece and cool historical piece. It is 11 inches tall and about 8 inches in diameter. Early 1900s Antique Stoneware Whiskey Jug w/ a really unique and rare glaze! The yellowish mark on the lower right corner of the jug in the main photo is not a blemish or mark. It is part of the original glaze. There are no cracks or chips and the jug will still hold liquid. There is however some very minor pitting which is for the most part unnoticeable. There are a couple of chips- one fairly good size one on the bottom and a smaller one on the side of the spout(see the pictures) But the jug has no cracks and the handle is intact. When I took the photos I hadn't wiped off the bottom of the jug but the black stuff came off. We are selling a beautiful OLD CONTINENTAL WHISKEY 3-1/4" mini jug. My research showed this little gem was used as a salesman sample to promote the whiskey in the late 1800's. The jug is a beige color with blue flecks and has an ACORN symbol with the Old Continental Whiskey words in blue. The handle has been hand applied.
