Up for auction is a very Old American Clay Pottery Jug. I know nothing about Old American Jugs. I think it looks like a Boot Leg bottle. A friend looked at them and I will tell you what he told me. He said that it has an applied handle-you can see the thumb print where it attached to the jug. It is pre 1900 and it is very crude. You can see all of the imperfections under the glaze. Globs of clay, and gouges out of the clay, star hairlines, all under the glaze. You can tell that this is hand thrown. It is so crudely finished. The base is not glazed, it has a nipple in the center with some chips on the edge of the base. Please look at the pictures, they are a very important part of the description. This jug is just under 10 inches tall, 5 1/2 inches across at the base, 1 1/2 inches across at the mouth and 18 3/4 around. Antique whiskey jug primitive stoneware moonshine bottle crock pottery
Offered for auction is this interesting primitive whiskey jug. This antique has probably seen a lot of use over the years and was probably used to hold moonshine at some point. it has probably seen a lot of partying in it's day. There is a cork in it which has an opening for liquid to pass through. It is dark brown on the top portion and kind of a tan/off white on the bottom portion. Base is a little over 7 inches tall and the entire jug is about 10.5 inches high. Base is approximately 7 inches in diameter. Bottom is slightly concave and has strips of old fabric affixed. This is an antique Calvados stoneware pottery jug for apple brandy from France. It features a stopper of a hand-sculpted man's head in a jaunty cap which fits snugly over a cork. Offered is this antique stoneware bottle with pouring spout. The bottle has a beautiful reddish-brown glaze. Somewhat variegated in color. It is stamped by the manufacturer. Denby Pottery of England and is also stamped"T. Davids Co New York" The Thaddeus Davids Co. was a big New York ink retailer in the mid to late 1800s. I believe. But am not certain, that this is one of their ink bottles, made for them by Denby. The bottle stands approx. 9 1/4" high and is about 3 1/2" in diameter at the base. It is in very good to excellent condition. With no chips or cracks. There are some bumps. Dips, rough places, etc. on the bottle surface, under the glazing, obviously present at the time of manufacture. I think this is a fairly uncommon bottle. This is a very rare pottery bottle with a rockingham glaze. It has 2 handles. Applied flowers, leaves and vines. measures 8 3/4" high x 7" wide x 3 3/8" deep. A note inside the bottle stated it was made at the Swan Hill pottery in New Jersey between 1840 and 1860. There are no makers marks on the piece. This is all the information I have on it.
