VINTAGE LIQUOR JUG FEDERAL LAW FORBIDS THE SALE OR REUSE OF THIS BOTTLE R 104
This bottle is in excellent condition. It has a few minor scuffs due to general usage. The bottle is embossed with the words"Federal law forbids the sale or re-use of this bottle" inside an oval. The letter and number"R 104" is embossed right below the oval. Dimensions: Height: 10.20 inches Base Diameter: 3.12 inches History of Marking: Bottles which are embossed with the words"Federal law forbids the sale or re-use of this bottle" are dating from 1935 through the early 1970s. After prohibition was repealed on Dec 5. 1933 the law changed again and it became legal to manufacture and sell alcoholic beverages. The reasoning behind this law was to prevent the refilling of bottles by the black market bootlegging businesses. In 1935 the law went into effect which stated that the words"Federal law forbids sale ... moreor re-use of this bottle" must be embossed somewhere on the bottle. On Dec 1. 1964 the law was repealed. Some manufactures still were embossing their bottles into the early 1970s. Since hundreds or thousands of bottle molds would have been in active use circa 1964 when the phrase requirement was phased out, it would have been highly expensive, time-consuming and basically pointless to re-tool all the molds to“erase” the warning. Thus it is certain that some bottles continued to carry the phrase for some time after 1964. Nevertheless. It is still a fairly safe bet that most bottles with this marking do indeed date from that 29-year period. Huge numbers of all types and shapes of“spirits” flasks& cylinder-shaped(fifth) bottles(bourbon& scotch whiskey. Gin, vermouth, vodka, etc, etc) were marked with this phrase. This was done in an effort to discourage the re-use of empty bottles for bottling and selling homemade(that is. Unregulated) distilled liquor(moonshine” the sale of which had became very common and widespread during the Prohibition era. Many of these are ordinary“generic” glass bottles with nothing particularly unusual about them. However. Many of the bottles o

This canteen shaped stoneware 1/2 gallon jug is a very rare piece with 10 or less known to exist. Made by the Whites Pottery. Utica, New York factory for the Utah Liquor Company. Whites Pottery, Utica, NY is famous for their cobalt paddletail and running bird stoneware designs that sell for thousands of dollars. It is salt glazed with cobalt blue. The front has the words"Utah Liquor Company and 167 South Main St" The backside features a scene of three men drinking. Below is more about the canteen and the Utah Liquor Company. One of the most prolific of the Utah liquors firms was the Utah Liquor Company. This firm is first noted in the 1894 in the Salt Lake City Directory. Pretty sure with the photos you have listed that this jug is a quarter gallon rather that a half gallon. I am not aware of anyone who has actually measured the capacity of the canteens but for over 40 years this size is considered the quart. I already have a set but my two half gallons could be upgraded. Your jug is an exceptional example of this rare piece. The rarity of the quart has held but several other half gallon examples have surfaced. The quart usually brings a higher price than the half. The gallon is still the toughest to get. CROCK TYPE LIQUOR**/JUG/BOTTLE/HOLDER
This is a Crock Jug. It has crackling on the top which is light beige and on the bottom it is brown with no crackling. The stopper is also brown with no crackling. The bottom has"liquor" imprinted on it then R-4 in the center of the bottom. And on the other side from liqueur it has Mohawke. The cork does not look new, in fact there is tape or some kind of paper on the cork that looks old. Do not know for sure how old this is.

Liquor was legal but producing it was subject to greater Federal control. One law required that alcoholic bottles must be embossed with the text. Antique 1800's I.W. HARPER Kentucky Whisky stoneware JUG * liquor bottle
We are pleased to offer a I.W. Harper Whiskey stoneware jug from Nelson County. Kentucky. The jug once contained whiskey from the Bernheim Distilling Co. of Louisville, KY. It features brown lettering on Cream Color and there is crazing throughout. It touts the fact that the whiskey was awarded by the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exp/1884-1885/New Orleans. I have read that the"I W" initials were borrowed from Isaac's own name.
