LITTLE BROWN JUG! Presented here for Stoneware Collectors and Set Decorators. Is this genuine antique 19thc Stoneware Jug covered with a deep dark layer of Albany Brown Slip Glaze and fitted with a Pour Lip Spout for your liquid refreshment, did anyone say Moonshine? This is an American pottery piece manufactured in the post 1850 time frame for utilitarian use but now elevated into a country collectible with much charm from yesteryear just for you! Stoneware Jug stands 10" tall and measures 7 7/8" across the base diameter formed in a slight gumdrop shape with well formed loop strap handle flowing right into a pointed pour lip spout neck fitted with an old cork that moves in and out freely at will. Slight dishing of neck to catch drips(lest you shall waste any good liquid refreshment to spillage! Scale weight is a rock solid heavy ... morefive pounds! Slight lighter brown kiss mark haze near bottom due to uneven firing in the making. Please study pictures taken outdoors in natural sunlight to view all colors and characteristics of this sturdy piece of pottery. Very thick chocolate brown overglaze with no flaking or fry anywhere coats the exterior with a plain bottom. Unsigned, and no capacity mark, but I would call this a goodly one gallon size. Pre 1900 Hand Turned Albany Slip Jug With Spout
Beautiful antique Albany Slip jug originally made for Molasses. The jug is marked with a capital"A. The"single letter marks on jugs and crocks(especially Albany slip items) were to identify the merchant where they originated from and were intended to be returned to. If you went to the store for a gallon of vinegar and didn't bring your own container. The storekeeper would loan you one. Most small towns might only have one or two stores and a simple capital letter would suffice to prove ownership. The hand turned Albany slip jugs generally date back to pre 1900. It is a hand turned piece and the shape is a little different than usual. You can see the turning marks in the piece. It is also unusual to see spouts on these pieces. What makes it so special is that it has then hand painted by Paul"Papa" Horning circa 1964-1972. Paul Horning was native PA Dutch. Born in Nov 17, 1884 into a Mennonite family in Berks County. He rejected much of the faith and conservative style. Forced to leave school at the age of 10, he was self educated and actually taught school at the age of 25 for a few years. He was skilled in pen& ink, as well as cartooning and was sought after by the local newspaper for illustrations. Instead he went into banking, insurance, and sales. Circa 1855 William Brownfield "Swiss" relief molded jug with goat's head spout
We are listing this very nice marked William Brownfield relief moulded stoneware jug in the Swiss pattern. Circa 1855. The Swiss pattern is a wood-grained barrel form with a goat's head spout(this one also has the two holes to hold a metal lid, but the jug does not appear to have ever had one) A picture and description of a Swiss jug with a metal lid can be seen on page 85 of the book A Collector's Guide to Nineteenth-Century Jugs. The mark on the bottom of both this jug and the one in the Jug book is the same raised semi-circle banner with Swiss impressed in it, above a Staffordshire knot containing the impressed letters W B, and impressed numbers- 30 on this jug, and 24 in the Jug book. On this jug there is also a separate incised circled X over to one edge on the bottom. The jug is 7.5 inches tall, 5.5 inches at its widest point, ... moreand is in very good condition. There is a small flake off the inside of the spout, and a separation hairline on one side of the bottom of the handle(see the close up pictures) This is a very nice looking pitcher. Rare and unusual early 1800s Bacchus spout stoneware jug
We are listing this rare and unusual beaded and classically sprigged stoneware jug from the early 1800s. Which has a very striking Bacchus spout and a very uncommon color combination. See the close up pictures of the spot to fully appreciate the ability of the unknown potter who made this. The jug is 4.5 inches tall, almost 5 inches at its widest point, and displays well. It does have some small flaws as follows: a chip in the bottom beading, a chip above the top beading, slight rubbing on the lip of the spout and Bacchus' nose, a chip off the bottom of the handle and a small flaw on the handle, and some typical separation cracks on the sprigs(none of these affect the overall display of this very unusual piece- see the close up pictures) We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. Early 1800s highly glazed porcelain serpent spout jug
We are listing this pretty little classically sprigged. Engine turned serpent spouted jug from the early 1800s. A picture and description of either this jug or an identical one appears on page 6 of the book A Collector's Guide to Nineteenth-Century Jugs Volume II. The intertwined serpent tails which form the handle are extremely delicate, and it is amazing they have survived the 200 years without damage. The jug is 4 inches tall, 5.5 inches at its widest point, and in excellent condition. There are minor separation cracks on some sprigs(as usual) and a thin hairline on the bottom which does not go through to the inside(see the close up pictures) This is a rarely seen version of this type of jug. Antique Redwear Stoneware Whiskey Jug With Pour Spout Nice Check It Out
You are looking at an old whiskey jug with a pour spout on it it is in excellent condition for it age there are no cracks or hairline cracks on it. I have only wiped it with a damp cloth the remove the dust I would say there is 2 small chips on the spout about ball point pen size as I tried to show in the pictures. Any questions please feel free to ask. It is brown in color but it's not even some spots look lighter like the finish was thinner in those spots. This listing is for one Large Antique Brown Glazed Hand Thrown Stoneware Jug with pouring Spout. It is unmarked and of unknown age. This jug is large and heavy- 8" diameter. 9-1/4" tall, it weighs 6 pounds. The handle is large and solid and looks a little crooked- not quite square to the body of the jug. I don't know if this is intentional or not. Looks great in any case. In addition to some normal small(1/8" rim chips this jug has suffered a quarter-sized chip/flake at the rim. This has been glued back in place at some point. A nice heavy. Old jug which displays very nicely despite its defects. Interesting 1815-1835 Georgian hunt jug w/serpent handle & spout - Chrysanthemum
We are listing this interesting looking Georgian sprigged stoneware hunt jug made in the 1815-1835 period by the pottery known as the Chrysanthemum Factory. It is marked on the bottom with a raised white chrysanthemum pad with the number 20 impressed in the middle of it. You can see a similar Chrysanthemum#20 jug pictured and described on page 104 of An Illustrated Guide to British Jugs. This jug has a strainer inside the typical Chrysanthemum serpent spout. An intertwined serpent tails handle, sprigged hunt scenes all around the body, and engine turning above the base. It is 5.5 inches tall, almost 8 inches at its widest point, and in good condition for its age. There are the usual separation lines and discolorations on the sprigging, and slight rubbing on the top rim and the mouth of the spout.
