You are bidding on an antique Character jug made by Adderley of Staffordshire England. This great old piece. Is hand painted and as you can see from the photos has wonderful detail. Just look at that impish grin,I wonder what he is thinking? Maybe it's that he would like another tankard of ale! I looked for other character jugs made by Adderley and there doesn't seem to be much out there, which makes this one a rare find. It measures 5" tall x 5" wide including handle and is in very good condition with No chips,cracks,repairs and very little paint loss. It has the Adderley marking,some impressed numbers which are difficult to see, and a written L/S marking which might be the artist's initials. Offered for sale is a very unique antique Pottery Jug. Most likely made in PA. The jug has never had a handle. The spout on the top has a large lip which makes it easier to hold onto. There is a small pouring spout on the top of the shoulder of the piece. Resembles a Monkey Jug or a Harvest Jug. The clay is a greyish color which you can see around the base where the glaze did not adhere. The surface has some pinholes in the glaze which are from the manufacturing process. In this auction we have one piece from a HUGE collection of Royal Doulton ... morecharacter jugs that we acquired from a private collector. This item is a small Royal Doulton Toby jug. The Falconer, from the Williamsburg Collection. The Falconer wears a sporting cap of turquoise and white and black stripes. His fur collar tops a back cloak. The handle on the left side is a stand on which rests the falcon, grey feathers on top and a white breast. His right wing extends over the Falconer’s cap. It is in EXCELLENT condition! There are no chips, cracks or crazing. It has the Royal Doutlon Mark on the bottom with four registration numbers. Falconry is a tool for hunting dated back for centuries dated from the Chinese[2000 BC] The Falconer removes a young falcon and trains to fly when release from his wrist killing the quarry but leaving it untouched. In England, Henry VIII found it a favorite pastime. The Falconers modeler was Max Henk and it was produced by Royal Doulton from 1960 through 1991. It measures approximately 4" high.
