stoneware / redware bulbous pottery jug signed blue/black glaze Antique American
Hello- This charming bulbous jug is 5 1/2" tall and the same in diameter. It is some kind of stoneware- which looks reddish on the surface. But is also greyish underneath. The glaze is a very shiney black which turns blue where thicker. It is full of metallic bursts in the glaze. The is pure white with a slight uniform crackle which suggests some real age. It could be earlier than 1900- I don't know. It is inscribed underneath- it looks like McCall. Please email with questions.

PART OF A LARGE COLLECTION PLEASE LOOK AT ALL PICTURES BEFORE BIDDING ALL ITEMS SOLD AS IS. 7" TALL BASE 5 3/8" Saltglaze stoneware became popular in the 17th century and is a very hard. The damage of course does affect value, but collectors are always seeking out items of this nature. Salt glaze pottery is stoneware with a glaze of glossy. Translucent and slightly orange-peel-like texture which was formed by throwing common salt into the kiln during the higher temperature part of ... morethe firing process. Sodium from the salt reacts with the silica in the clay body to form a glassy coating of sodium silicate. The glaze may be colourless or may be coloured various shades of brown(from iron oxide) blue(from cobalt oxide) or purple(from manganese oxide) Due to the significant amount of air pollution resulting from the process, environmental air restrictions led to the demise of widespread use of salt glazing. Unusually decorated mid 1800s Rockingham glazed stoneware jug (American?)
We are listing this unusually decorated mid 1800s Rockingham glazed stoneware jug. Which is unmarked and could be from either an English or an American pottery of the period. It has a most unusual reclining man figure for a handle, and among the decorations around the body of the jug are four faces of mythological man/creatures with pointed ears. There are other stylistic design features around the lower portion of the jug, and grapevines around the top portion. The brown glazing is excellent, including on the inside of the jug. The piece is 7.5 inches tall, over 6.25 inches at its widest point, and in very good condition. There is some roughness around the rim with one small area of glaze loss, small areas of glaze loss on both sides of the handle, and a tiny bit of glaze loss on one of the faces. Please view the closeup pictures and judge ... morefor yourself- this jug displays very well. We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. The United Kingdom, and Canada. Shipping to the United Kingdom and Canada will be charged at cost. Payment must be made by Paypal within three days of the auction ending.
