A very beautiful nrique greek icon from 19thC. It is Hand-painted with egg tempera on wood covered with metal. Size: 23/32 cm( 9.05/ 12.60 inch) Pesent icon comes from my private collection! It was bought in Lesbos island. Greece. The icon is called The Panagia Glykophilousa. Sweet-kissing" or"Loving Kindness" icon depicts the Virgin Mary caressing her Son. So that they appear to be kissing. In the Byzantine representations, the Child caresses her cheek while she appears sad, seemingly contemplating his coming Passion. The representation from the Cretan School of the 17th Century shows very pronounced characteristics of the Virgin Mother. Rare Antique Greek Tin Ex Voto Milagro, Man Carrying Baton (Musician?)
This is a rare antique Greek tin ex voto milagro. Which comes from the estate of an elderly antique dealer who traveled extensively in Europe in the first part of the 20th century. Made of tin, it is embossed with the figure of a moustachioed gentleman wearing a suit of perhaps the turn of the last century, carrying a small stick(baton? in his hand. Ex votos were nailed to church alters and shrines with depictions of what the patron was praying for- so perhaps this was a musician seeking inspiration? Measures 4 3/4" long x 1 1/2" wide; has a bit of interesting green burnish at the top right(looks like what happens to copper, so perhaps this has a lot of copper) small hole at top where it was affixed to shrine. This is a very rare and large Greek Icon dating back to the 18th century.What makes this icon very special is the fact that it is painted on canvas which has not been mounted on wood. The very fine painting is done on gold background. Both the Panagia and the child are waring crowns. These are painted in high relief to create a threedimensional impression. This technique is also used with the inscriptions. The nails and the clasp of the garment. There is a glossy gold shimmering varnish all over the painting. There are some tears visible which have apparently occured in old times and which have been repaired professionnally long long ago- see also the photo from the back of the icon. It comes from a very good workshop of iconography. Probably from northern Greece early 19th century, very rare piece. The icon of the Virgin Glykofyloussa( sweet kissing Madonna) it is a very lovely icon and it is considered as the protecting family icon. It is painted on wood. Probably it is pine wood, unique board prepared by primer of gesso and rabbit skin or fish glue. The hallos are gilt by gold leaf and decorated by floral relieve motives, ... morevery rare element wich shows a good and high level studio of this period. The colors are very vivid and transfer t an optimism, it is evident that the icon has provenance from a very urban environment, from a Bic city of the Ottoman empire with large Christian population, probably Thessaloniki or Ottoman Constantinople of mid 19th century. This very blessed and holy picture measures 9 1/2" Long x 8 3/4" wide. It is made of oak inside a gold ornate frame. It has a blemish on the right side of the wood which I have tried to capture in a photo. There is a square of plastic covering the picture for protection. It doesn't take a way from one of the most beautiful pictures I have ever seen. A small clip on the back makes for easy hanging.
