A fine example of the Theotokos Burning Bush icon from the late 18th to early 19th century. This icon was purchased in the late 1980's in the Czech Republic for my family's collection. This is a very rare and large Greek Icon dating back to the 18th century.What makes this icon very special is the fact that it is painted on canvas which has not been mounted on wood. The very fine painting is done on gold background. Both the Panagia and the child are waring crowns. These are painted in high relief to create a threedimensional impression. This technique is also used with the inscriptions. The nails and the clasp of the garment. There is a glossy gold shimmering varnish all over the painting. There are some tears visible which have apparently occured in old times and which have been repaired professionnally long long ago- see also the photo from the back of the icon. This is an extremely rare antique late 18th century bronze religious picture frame which was once displayed in a church. it is very well made from thick bronze which has a beautiful gold gilded and silver-plated finish. the finial is a very ornate crucifix surrounded by nice detailing all done in high relief. it has a wooden insert that was add red later and if the buyer wants i would be happy to cut glass for it free of charge. the opening measure 10 1/4 by 15 3/4 inches. ANTIQUE GREEK ICON OF THE HOLY THEODORES. GREECE Technique: Egg tempera on wood. Gesso, gold leaf, varnish Provenance:Northern Greece. Dimensions: 50x40 cm(19 11/16 x15 3/4 inches) Age: 1second half of 18th century This is an authentic antique greek icon of the second half 18th century depicting the Holy Theodores Tyron and Stratlates. The Saints Theodores are painted as soldiers. They were both soldiers of the Roman army during the percecutions of early 300 A. D. and they had been asked to denny their faith, they passed through many sufferings and tortures and they died as martyrs. It is a very rare icon painted probably in workshop of Norethern Greece. In the region of Trace, probably in the city of Andrianopoli- today belonges to Turkey and it is caled Edirne. In the past was a bic byzantine city and turing the Ottoman occupation the magiority ... moreof the inhabitans were Christians and we have may workshops of iconpainting, the most famous icon painter of the 18th Century was Konstantne the Adranopolitan from this city. Antique 18th century Russian Icon dated 1793 Russische Ikone
Dear Ebayer L'ATELIER SALON PRESENTS! This silver oklad icon originates in Russia and dates to the year 1793. It represents Saint John Chrysostom and St. John the Evangelist conversing in a garden. The two saints are portrayed full-length. Turning towards each other, dressed in ecclesiastical garments. John Chrysostom was Archbishop of Constantinople and one of the Three Hierarchs. Here he raises his right hand and holds a book, presumably one of his liturgies. Saint John the Evangelist also raises a hand in conversation and carries a book that shows the text of the Revelation. The Holy Spirit is represented as a flying dove. The edge is adorned with floral and vegetal patterns. The oklad shows three hallmarks at the edge. One of which reads‘1793’ The Saints are labelled in Cyrillic on the oklad and the piece is in good condition.
