LA MAISON BONHEUR in the South of France a large and heavy pair of signed French cast gilt bronze ormolu drapery tiebacks. Each is topped with a scallop shell cartouche which is repeated on the ornate front medallion. The scallop shell is the symbol of Saint-Jacques. Dating to medieval times and associated with pilgrimages through France to Spain. It is found on many French decorative pieces. Textiles. Metalware and furniture. They are made of cast bronze with an applied gilding. Known as ormolu. It is no longer being made in the traditional way. Which goes back many centuries. It has been replaced with electroplating. Which does not give the richness or depth of historical ormolu. This pair has some loss of the ormolu. Please see the photos. This is normal for gilt pieces of this age.
