And have been treasured by several owners. Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. Chips, scratches, Fang Byeri reliquary figure Gabon Guinea African Additional Information: This sitting male reliquary figure is carved in a Fang sculptural style shown in ... morea gesture of offering. A motif seen in other examples of Fang sculpture. The figure is covered by a black oily surface that was the result of palm oil and copal resin being applied to the figure. The heart shaped face, facial features and body shape locates the figure among the Ntumu, a northern Fang sub-group. During migrations which took place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries the Fang people moved to their present area becoming part of a complex overlay of population of approximately 200.000, who stretch from southern Cameroon into Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Living in small forest communities the Fang focused upon tightly knit kinship and lineage systems and the veneration of ancestors through the use of figurative sculptures. Each lineage's ancestors were located in family shrines where memorials or reliquary boxes known as byeri, containing their bones were under the care of an elder known as the Esa. Containers made of either bark or woven basketry were surmounted by sculpted figures known as eyema-o- byeri that guarded the remains of Fang ancestors(Fernandez 1975: 723-46) When not in actual use the sculpted figures were generally hidden from view

The ensemble of Fang peoples practice a cult devoted to ancestor lineages. The bieri. Whose aim is to both protect themselves from the deceased and to recruit their aid in matters of daily life. This familial cult does not monopolize the Fang’s religious universe, for it coexists with other beliefs and rituals of a more collective character. It is the bieri. Or ancestor sculpture, which has most obviously given rise to the making of remarkable wooden sculpture. The statuary of the Fang can be classified into three main groups: heads on long necks, half-figures and full figures, standing or seated. Carved with great simplicity, at the same time they exhibit a high degree of sophistication in the coordination of bulbous forms. The neck is often a massive cylindrical form. The arms have various positions: hands clasped in front of the body(sometimes ... moreholding an object) held in front of the chest or attached to it; hands resting on the knees in the seated figures. The navel is often exaggerated into a cylindrical form. Legs are short, stunted. Usually there is a domed, wide forehead and the eyebrows often form arcs with the nose. The eyes are often made of metal roundlets. The bieri would be consulted when the village was to change location. When a new crop was planted, during a palaver, or before going hunting, fishing, or to war. But once separated from the reliquary chest, the sculpted object would lose its sacred value and could be destroyed. The ritual consisted of prayers, libations, and sacrifices offered to the ancestor, whose scull would be rubbed with powder and paint each time. With its large head, long body, and short extremities, the Fang bieri had the proportion of a newborn. Thus emphasizing the group’s continuity with its ancestor and with the three classes of the society: the“not-yet-born, the living, and the dead. The relics were essentially skull fragments, or sometimes complete skulls, jawbones, teeth and small bones. This Fang has an outstanding patina throughout. Measurements: 25" X 6"

The Kota revere the relics of ancestors. Ancestor worship formed the core of the family group’s religious and social life. At the death of a chief. The initiates would take from the body of the deceased various relics, which were then decorated with metal and rubbed with powders of multiple magical powers. The Kota have produced large quantity of statues of ancestors with the diamond-shaped lower part called mbulu-ngulu; these rather two-dimensional sculptures are in wood; symbolic metals were applied to the upper part in strips or sheets to add power. Copper in particular was identified with longevity and power. These statues stood guard in cylindrical bark boxes. On baskets or bundles called bwete that contained the skulls and bones of important ancestors. Bound into a packet and lashed to the base of a carved figure. The bones formed a ... morestable base that allowed the image to stand more or less upright. Thanks to the diversity of the groups, scattered over a vast area, a great variety of different styles of figures has developed, some of them endogenous and some influenced by neighboring styles. Kota figures represent an extremely stylized human body. Reduced to shoulders and“arms, in emptied lozenge shape, surmounted by a large face framed by an ample coiffure with hanging tresses. The face, always oval, may be concave(female) convex(male) or concave-convex, with a forehead in quarter-sphere(also male) The reliquaries were kept outside the homes, in huts at the edge of the village. Only the initiates of the lineage had access to this sacred place. At the time of initiation in the reliquary cult, the clans would meet to perform communal rituals; each clan’s chief would dance holding the reliquary. Some reliquaries featured a large figure representing the lineage founder along with some smaller figures representing his successors. There are figures with two identical or different faces made on two opposite sides of the flat head. Secured on a wooden base. Measurements: 22" in height by 10 1/2" at width.

Similar to the mbulu-ngulu. The Sango reliquary serves the same purpose. The Kota revere the relics of ancestors. Ancestor worship formed the core of the family group’s religious and social life. At the death of a chief. The initiates would take from the body of the deceased various relics, which were then decorated with metal and rubbed with powders of multiple magical powers. The Kota have produced large quantity of statues of ancestors with the diamond-shaped lower part called mbulu-ngulu; these rather two-dimensional sculptures are in wood; symbolic metals were applied to the upper part in strips or sheets to add power. Copper in particular was identified with longevity and power. These statues stood guard in cylindrical bark boxes. Originally. Bwete figures were hand made and passed down through family clans. The purpose of the Bwete was to guard the reliquary container in which some of the bones of the family’s ancestors were kept. Both the reliquary and its guardian figure played prominent roles in the traditional ceremonies performed by the Mahongwe. The core wooden figure features a concave. Truncated oval face, with a projecting top-knot, that is completely covered with metal. It has a central vertical metal panel with an attached narrow nose and circular metal eyes. Metal strips of wire join the eyes to the lower border of the face. The lozenge(has hole in center) body has copper wire binding wrapped at the neck. There is a small chip of wood out of the rim at the bottom– please see photo. In shoulders, in upper arms, arms, and abdomen, is a work from the Fang. This is especially noted in the head, hairstyle, and facial details, in the stance and body shape and in the way copper sheets are designed. Though similar in their forms the reliquary figures fall into a number of subtly differentiated sub-styles that stretch from their core area in Gabon to southern Cameroon. Usually, a bark container known as a byeri was normally associated to Fang figures and held the bones of an ancestor that were venerated during annual ceremonies at which the ancestors were present in the form of the sculptures. This figure would not have been attached to a bark reliquary but most probably was used during Byeri rituals. The figure can still be appreciated for its unique form as an example of hybrid Fang carving with strong. This"byeri" figure is an extremely unusual example in term of style, but still fits firmly within the Fang tradition.
