You are bidding on an Antique Vintage Arts& Crafts Craftsman Cast Iron Vertical Letter Door Mail Slot. The entire piece measures about 7 1/8" long and 3" wide. The slot measures 5" long and about 1 1/4" wide. The spring works great. The letters are nice and crisp. I do not see any cracks. Chips or breaks on the piece. There is a small amount of paint residue and some minor surface rust. There is some pitting on the letters R& S especially and minor pitting other places. Vintage Brass letter slot Front Door Mail Hardware
I am selling a used vintage brass mail slot. Years ago it was very common to have your mail delivered door to door by the postman who would simply slip the envelopes through the slot and the mail would drop safely inside the house. This mail slot shows wear but does function well when I push on the door to open the slot. I washed it off but did not try to shine it up. There are some areas of oxidation near one of the screw holes that needs to be cleaned off. The spring mechanism has some rust on the surface that I tried to show you with some pictures. The slot is approximately 7 1/2 by 2 1/4 inches. I do not know if this slot had a back plate for inside the house. It does not come with one. I will try to answer any questions that you may have. This has not been cleaned and has some gray paint on the swinging door.It appears to be made out of bronze but I am not sure. It is heavy. It weighs 4.5 lbs. This is complete and functional. But I saw no identifying manufacturers' marks. Overall measurements are 15 7/8" x 3 7/8" Slot measurements are 12 1/4" x 2 1/2" This will work on a door up to 1 3/4" thick with the original screws that are provided. What an exciting find.fresh from a local estate: a solid brass antique letter/mail opening/slot for a door. Dates from the early part of the 20th Century and backplate measures 8 1/2" long overall. It is 3 3/4" tall. The long screws on the back which go through the door are 2 3/8" long. The measurement of the long screws is 6 1/2" on center. This measurement is where it would go through the door itself. There are some numbers on the underside of the bail handle. 378?38 and Reg'd. Condition is excellent: no damage, nice patina, nothing missing, the handle is secure. This is ready to install in your door. the end of one wire is sticking out and needs to be bent back) This is an original. NOT a reproduction. For sale with No Reserve(Continental United States Only) is this Solid Brass Letter Slot It is marked only with the name of or the word" Letters" and no other identifying markings as to the manufacture. Measuring a full 11 inches from side to side the letter opening is 9" wide by 1" Since it is non magnetic I'm sure it is made out of solid brass. I have removed one of the screws and made sure that the threads in the other 2 openings were not stripped. It also is approximately 2" deep from the faceplate to the back of the slot. The only possibly apologies would be a slight warp at or above the letter"R" and the missing screws/washers. Thus it is being sold on an" as is" basis.
