It is 82" long and ... more39" high to the center at the back. This sofa is ornate with hand crafted hard wood decor about 2" thick in dark brown color of the grape and leaf patterns. The cushion is about 4" at highest point. 58" long without arm, and 20" deep. It is an original tanned upholstery with the small mauve flower pattern. It is decorated with some fabric buttons on the cushion. The cushion is very firm. There are 3 light water stains on the cushion sitting area as shown in the pictures. There is a small worn area on the fabric of the left arm. No major damage on the cushion. The cushion is 5" high from the floor. It has the brass rivets stitched along the cushion all the way around the front. The arm is 24 1/2" high from the floor. Each arm of the sofa has embossed hand crafted grape leaf design. There is a wooden surface damage on the top right arm. The stitching at the back along the left arm has come detached about 2" The legs are very stunning with the hand carvings on wood about 2 3/4" thick. The end of the legs have brass wheels about 1" diameter. There is a tear at the back on right foot area of the upholstery about 2" but it is not noticeable. The back felt cover is purple/ blue, it is faded. There are rusty nails holding back cover, that is partially torn off. The bottom of the couch covered with the fabric, it is old, has no tears. All the tears mentioned can be fixed. All is in great shape. This piece is really classic antique look, was kept well by our grandmother circa 1800's. Sold as is. Local pick-up only. From the estate of a life long collector comes this very rare and wonderful antique. C. 1 830-1840. Salesman sample of an Empire style divan with hand carved detail and inlaid design. Retaining the original stuffing of straw or horsehair. In spectac ular condition for the age of the piece. Structura lly sound and built very well.all of the original old nails are in place without any missing. I do believe that other than the nails used in the wood slats to hold the cushion in place. That the rest of the divan is fitted and pegged. I am unsure if the upholstery is original or was possibly re upholstered later in the 19th c. But, the upholstery is old. Early and in superb condition with the s lightest bit of spotting on some of the red trim. Which is mainly under neath the arms. By pushing down on the cushion. One is abl e to tell that the cont ... moreents are original straw and/or horsehair. Inlaid wood design on all ends and sides. Wood appears to be. They have pearl inlays in both pieces so we know they are a set. They are both upholstered in velvet. The sofa shows a little age on the arms in that regard. However the chair is all but perfect. Beautiful Antique Sofa
I don't know very much about sofas. but I know what I like. I looked for weeks before I found this one. And when I saw it, thought it was just beautiful. I purchased it at an antique store in the famous antique district(8th Ave) in Nashville about 5 years ago. Unfortunately we are downsizing a bit, and need to get rid of it. It has a classic look, but is not over the top like some other sofas in a similar style. I believe it is considered Victorian, and is from the late 1800's, although I could be wrong. It is about 86 inches long, an is structurally very sound. The fabric is in good condition, but not perfect. The wood does have some slight cosmetic imperfections, but I feel it gives it its charm. I inherited this love seat. It has come down through several generations of the family and I have had it for 10 years. Antique 1920's Sofa Frame for Restoration/Reupholstery. Empire Style. 65"w x 23"d x 34-1/2"h The two back legs were previously cut by the former owner. They have been reglued and they are sturdy and the frame does not wobble. They only need cosmetic attention. The wood is not a hard wood. So I have opted to paint the finish and it looks good. Needs to be finished; minor sanding and final coat of paint and reupholstering. Springs are secured and need to be re-tied. It wood really be great all finished. It needs about 12 Yards of Fabric to recover fully or another option was to cover the sides and back and get some custom cushions made for the seat and back. This one features an oversized bolstered roll arm that is capped on the front with rich beveled circular mahogany designs. Stem and leaf carvings accent the front base rails and the structure is rock solid and sturdy with two small(less than an inch each) veneer loss near the left front leg. Accent carvings are also found on the crest and finial. And there is uniform spring seating support—front edge seating area is shy on padding, but presentable. The underside is fabric covered. Antique Victorian Style Mauve Sofa with Ornate Carvings - needs restoration
Antique sofa being sold in"as is" condition. This mauve velvet sofa was purchased at an estate sale more than forty years ago by a late family member. She was told that it was empire style and that it from was the late 1880s. Over the years. This couch was well used and loved. It must be sold. As you can see, it is in need of some serious restoration. The couch no doubt will need to be recoverd. The arms have terrible fraying and you can see the material underneath the velvet. The wood. Which I am not sure if it is mahogany or walnut, needs to be re-stained and some areas of the wood may be fillers. In many areas, it has a"rough" feel. The cushions all have broken zippers and at one time the stuffing was replaced with some cheapy stuff. One of the legs were repaired at one time(see photo- a poor job) Also, the velvet on ... morethe cushions have fray marks as well as one the actual soft. The photos pretty much show all the work needed to get this sofa back in shape. The carving is very pretty and detailed. Antique American Empire Classical Crotch Mahogany Sofa c1840~Magnificent
SquareTrade © AP6.0 This sofa is a n original ca. 1840 American Empire style built from solid Santo Domingo mah ogany moldings with cherry and white pine secondary woods and exquisitely veneered surfaces of bookmatched Santo Domingo crotc h veneer with whole crot ch veneer on lyre faces of arms. The base is constructed of half round and cove pattern all the way around front and sides. Very well formed and veneered. The double cyma-curved crestrail is classic American Empire. Significant positives about this piec e from the perspec tive of an antique f urniture restorer with over 30 years experience show that this piece stands out in at least 3 ways. The original veneering shows no sign of glue failure at all. It is amazin gly intact with very little damage. The finish appears to be original. In excellent condition, and finally, it appears ... moreto have been upholstered only twice- the second time ti me with s taples. Usually on a piece like this. The wood is literally riddled by several reupholsterings with tacks and nails and often requires serious repairs to the wood before it can be upholstered again. It was entirely hand made with the highest levels of craf tsmanship- no cut corners. Hand sawn. Hand planed. In other words, pieces like this are usually worn out and are done over so many times that they're no longer usable. Not this piece. It's one of the best p reser ved p ieces I've ever had in my shop- Golden Eagle Cabinet Shop. Negatives- at 170 years of age. One will want to av oid hard use. The re upholstery could use an application of gimp along the crest rail borders- a normal finishing touch not done yet. The original coil springs have diff erent spring so unds for di fferent places one might sit. And as befit s a dowager of mature age. There is a bit of lumpiness. V isually stunning with depth and vibrant color. This piece will proudl y be the centerpiece in your h ome. Which means it’s coming out of the empire era into the Victorian era, and both styles connect in this sofa. This style of sofa, which I’ve had before, was very popular during the Civil War era. The great thing about this particular sofa is that it is not only in great condition, but it has also been freshly reupholstered by its previous owner in a gorgeous antique beige colorful floral design that looks awesome against the original finish of the dark patina of the wood. The couch itself has a solid mahogany back with hand-carved flowers, with the top of one petal missing from one on the right hand side. Other than that, it’s in really good shape. The front has a ribbon molding with a flame mahogany serpentine skirt with applied carving in the center. The forearms are nicely carved with incise carved leaves. Antique Vintage Victorian Wood Bugundy Cushion Couch Sofa Hand Crafted 1800's This is an antique fabulous Victorian sofa. It is 82" long and 39" high to the center at the back. This sofa is ornate with hand crafted hard wood decor about 2" thick in dark brown color of the grape and leaf patterns. The cushion is about 4" at highest point. 58" long without arm, and 20" deep. It is an original tanned upholstery with the small mauve flower pattern. It is decorated with some fabric buttons on the cushion. The cushion is very firm. There are 3 light water stains on the cushion sitting area as shown in the pictures. There is a small worn area on the fabric of the left arm. No major damage on the cushion. The cushion is 5" high from the floor. It has the brass rivets stitched along the cushion all the way around ... morethe front. The arm is 24 1/2" high from the floor. Each arm of the sofa has embossed hand crafted grape leaf design. There is a wooden surface damage on the top right arm. The stitching at the back along the left arm has come detached about 2" The legs are very stunning with the hand carvings on wood about 2 3/4" thick. The end of the legs have brass wheels about 1" diameter. There is a tear at the back on right foot area of the upholstery about 2" but it is not noticeable. The back felt cover is purple/ blue, it is faded. There are rusty nails holding back cover, that is partially torn off. The bottom of the couch covered with the fabric, it is old, has no tears. All the tears mentioned can be fixed. All is in great shape. This piece is really classic antique look, was kept well by our grandmother circa 1800's. Sold as is. Local pick-up only. Probably c. 1900-1915 Item# 120010ERT222 This is a beautiful Louis XV style carved Fruitwood or Beech Canape. Crafted after the originals of the mid-18th Century, probably during the years of 1900-1915 or thereabouts. It is a truly timeless design, replicated since it's origination in the first Rococo period in France even until today. This sofa is entirely carved by hand, the exposed frame around the sofa with crisp molding that culminates in the crest, a bouquet of flowers with mixed foliate. Acanthus leaves peak up over the frame along the serpentine top rail as it flows into curled arms that almost wrap into the front, creating that classic canape warmth and completing the overall flowing form of the design. The entire sofa ... moreis upholstered in a pink upholstery- please read the condition below, as it is in overall"good" condition, but has blemishes that are not well captured by the camera. The frame rests over a thick exposed apron that is carefully carved with the same floral motif at the crest, incredibly stable on four front legs and three back legs, each carved at the knee with a fine short cabriole profile to terminate in scrolled french toes. This is a beautiful work of Early 20th Century hand craftsmanship and will truly be a visual delight in any formal sitting room. It is incredibly sturdy and strong. Full of life to last many generations, and of a classic design that simply does not go out of style. EXCELLENT QUALITY CARVED MAHOGONY ANTIQUE EMPIRE SOFA 1880-90
I had always loved this sofa-it had belonged to my mother since the 1960s. And previously it had belonged to my mother's best friend and her family. I don't have a good place for it, so I have to part with it. Please notice the great care taken by the upholsterer to match the floral designs on each seat and along the back, etc. Starting bid is far less than the estimated value of between $1200 to $3000, depending on the area in which it resides. An antique dealer, who is a friend, gave me information that I'm sharing below: Your sofa appears to be late Victorian from the pictures. It's definitely mahogany with a very nice ribbon grain to it. I worked on restoring several very similar ones. One of the problems inherent with the earlier Victorians(older than yours) was the legs would break in the area right where you show the ... morecloseup. Towards the late 1880's to 1890's. Which is what I believe yours is, they solved that problem. They did it by laminating 3 layers of wood in the legs, grain going different directions(like yours) so as not to split with the grain. Up for auction is this beautiful Victorian Rococo loveseat with a magnificent. Highly carved walnut frame. It measures approximately 40 inches high and 66 inches at its longest point. The seat height is 16 inches. The seat measures 21 inches deep. If you measure from where the back of the frame where it touches the wall, to the front of the seat, it measures approximately 30.5 inches deep. It has its original 4 casters. The springs are in good condition. And there are no tears in the fabric. It does have a spot with some light staining, which we never noticed until we were checking it closely for the description. There's one repair on the end of the apron, which can be seen in two of our pictures. It is a 2 inch by 2 inch by 1.5 inch triangle. This is not part of the leg, only a part of the apron. No reserve. This is a very nice sofa frame. Suitable for country or formal decor, nice with an English manor house look or Americana. It's all about what you use for upholstery. Right now, as it sits, everything but the springs will need to be replaced. This is the way to buy a sofa. I bought it for the way it sits. ALL of the old camelback sofas from the middle of the 20th century- and earlier- sit like a sofa should sit. I am just fed up with hearing about it's important that a sofa be good for lying down. Folks- if a sofa is any darn good, you won't have to lie down. It should sit so that you can read the paper or read a book for extended periods without needing to lie down or see a chiropractor- or both. Really. This is a standard 7 foot sofa and will need 13 or so yards to cover it, depending on what sort of a pattern you choose. It ... moresits just great, but is worn out. Don't even think about saving any of the stuffing, foam, or whatever. Really. Pair of French Provincial Louis XVI Antique Canapé Sofas Probably of Northern European origin One canapé of the period. Late 18th Century Second canapé is a nearly identical copy. Late 19th- early 20th Century Item# 130201HSL27 These are an absolute treasure. A rare find remarkably preserved and executed. They are a Pair of French Provincial Style Painted Antique Canape Sofas. One of the Period and crafted during the last quarter of the 18th Century. The other a nearly perfect copy of the first, probably executed during the late 19th to early 20th Century. Any craftsman can attest to the sheer difficulty of what was undertaken in crafting a copy of the original canape, a complex and incredibly time consuming endeavor that was certainly a commissioned project with a skilled cabinetmaker. Without any of the original drawings ... moreor schematics, the craftsman would literally have to measure every carving, build special tracks to lathe the molding, find woods that would adequately support the later"patination" and carve all aspects entirely by hand. The construction is identical to the period canapé. Including the placement of pegs to complete the tenon-mortised joints along the apron and frame. The results of this care are self evident. A very handsome and rare pair of antique canapé sofas in simply gorgeous condition. Both have a fine blend of teal. Cream and grey painted surfaces, flowing smoothly with the cream and light green diamond upholstery. The down-stuffed cushions are thick and comfortable with wonderful dimensions for the seating area that are quite supportive. The crest and apron of both sofas feature a somewhat unusual twisted and flowing ribbon tied in bows, the knees above each leg a deep inset rosette carving of floral inspiration, the legs broadly fluted, tapering and square in profile with upright bellflower carvings.
