Here’s one beautiful fireplace mantle which was removed from a home in Pittsburgh Pa. This old tiger oak mantle is in good vintage condition. Monumental Tiger Quartersawn Oak Mantel, Refinished with Original Mirror
Monumental tiger oak/ quartersawn mantel. The orignal beveled glass mirror is included but not pictured. This has been stripped and refinished which is a real plus when dealing with these old mantels because that process is usually more expensive than the purchase price of one that is in need of it. Everything about this mantel is substantial; oversize base. Round columns, beefy shelf, and intricate details. Photos seven and eight were taken inside to give you an idea of the finish color. The other photos were taken outside. The condition of the base wood is great. There are no corners that are tore up or smashed, which tends to be typical when these are removed from houses, moved around and stored. With careful examination you will be able to find a few nicks and dents that have been finshed over. The most notable issues are the upper left ... morescroll decoration having a peice broken off and missing and some chips to the leaf corbels under the shelf. Photo nine shows the very top which would be well over head height. The back boards extend and there is obviously no shelf cap. Our suggestion would be to cut the excess off of the uprights and install a flat top shelf. This would not be able to be seen unless you are on a ladder. Dimensions are more or less accurate but if you have a critical requirement you should ask to have it rechecked: 62" overall width. ATTENTION*Please read shipping information*Fine late 1800's or early 1900's solid oak fireplace mantel. Heavy and solid. This mantel features a carved head surrounded by flowers in the center just under the shelf flanked by carved paw feet and legs on each side. The carving on this piece is absolutely stunning! This piece has been refinished at some point. Must have been redone some time ago as there are very tiny/sparse white paint specks on the top. You have to look closely to see them. Other flaws include a piece of trim missing off of the top of the right leg, a very small piece of trim missing from the square part at the bottom of the right front leg, a hole was drilled just to the right of the right leg which was probably for mounting purposes and there is a 1" long piece of trim missing on the top left side towards the ... moreback just under the top shelf. All minor and none detract from the over all appearance. You can view them in the many pictures below. Over all this mantel measures about 61 1/8" wide X 11 1/2" deep X 48" tall. PLEASE CAREFULLY READ OUR SHIPPING SECTION PRIOR TO PURCHASE We are pleased to offer this. Beautiful, antique fireplace mantel/shelf. The mantel is old(early 1900s) and came from a home in the St. Louis area. It is constructed of quarter sawn oak with an extremely nice grain pattern. It features a long and deep, contoured/curved shelf with full, round columns(not halved and attached to the surround) for support. The columns are fairly substantial in diameter and are also quarter sawn. They retain their original bases which are identical to their capitals. The surround extends above the shelf and is fixed so that the center point of the grain pattern aligns with the center of the shelf. The grain on the top of the surround changes directions at the mid point so that the grain pattern on the surround faces inward toward the center. The piece ... moreis untouched so that it retains the original flat nails/screws as well as the old, large dowels which attach the shelf to the surround. The top of the shelf is not as ornately patterned as the balance of the piece and has some stain runs/drips on it. It probably, originally housed a piece of marble. The shelf is deepest at its center section and is rounded on the sides above the columns. It is a thick piece and measures 4" in thickness. The opening, which once surrounded a mirror, is beveled and not simply flat. This is an incredible mantel shelf. It is in very good condition with very little evidence of age or use. There are very few nicks or scratches and the finish is very good. It measures 60" long. 31.75" tall and it extends 12" from the wall at its deepest point. The columns are 21" tall. They are 5.5" in diameter at their bases and capitals and are 4" in diameter otherwise. The shelf section is 57.5" long. It is 8.75" deep at the ends and contours to a depth of 11" at the center. Matching Pair of Fireplace Mantels Tiger Oak Mantel Quartersawn Red Oak Mantle
Up for sale is an absolutely gorgeous pair of Victorian mantels from a building erected in the 1860's. There is not a doubt in my mind that you will never come across a pair like this again. These are made from quarter sawn red oak which appears to be old growth. The grain and fleck from the quartersawing on these will take your breath away. Columns are solid. With carved ionic capitals, and the corbels for the shelf contain hand carved leaf patterns. There are many different carved molding styles present, and they retain the original beveled mirrors. These are an exact matching set. For being 150 years old they are in great shape. But they do show some wear. These would be best stripped due to years of being Murphy Oil-d. Speaking of stripped did I mention these came from an old Victorian brothel? Either way, with age they also have ... moreaccumulated their fair share nicks an bumps. The mantel on the left has had some glue joint separation, so the mirror was removed to prevent damage. Top is lovely and has a small oak edge strip to keep things from falling off. Measures 41" long and shelf top is 7" deep. Height is about 9" It would be ideal as a fireplace mantel because of the substantial length. Though I've used it to hold pottery and more substantial items. Grain is beautiful. I have always hung from two picture hangers wall. Has brackets on back for hanging which are new and strong. It's large but not so heavy that it is hard to manage.
