Notice in pics 5& 6, that on the front top of the grate, there is a sliver of cast iron that appears to be either missing or it was cast that way, I'm not sure, however, its difficult to see and does not take away from the integrity of the item and it does NOT affect its use. I have no idea of age, but looks as though there are many many great years left for this item. It measure 12' deep, 16" high,and 19: wide at the back. Cast Iron Fireplace Insert Fleur De Lis Coal Box Grate Basket or Log Holder
Here is a Antique Cast Iron fireplace insert in very good condition for its age. I just purchased this from an estate sale and the owner said its been in the house since he can remember and he was about 50 years old. The piece has numbers on it in the back 1505-18-20 the swivel grate is numbered No.2 230. I can find no other markings. The grate measures 20 inches wide. 18 inches high and 12 inches front to back. The condition is very good no damage I could find just some surface corrosion from use and age. The grate looks like it could come apart with a turn of a heavy screw driver but that looks like it could be an issue from age I don't think they will turn without major cleaning and oiling. I will be shipping this in one piece and wrap the swivel grate separately. GOOD LUCK!

Fireplace grates were a big advancement on andirons, While andirons could hold large logs and chunks of firewood, a fireplace grate could contain the entire fire, kindling, charcoal, fuel-wood and all, and keep it off the floor of the fireplace, improving airflow! These grates are usually made of iron which was forge-welded together. They varied in size, from smaller, coal-burning grates, to much larger wood-burning grates, which could be several feet wide and several inches deep! This neat. Selling a stunning Antique Cast Iron Fireplace Basket Grate Coal Box Wood Log Holder from the late 19th century. Measures roughly 18" tall x 24" wide x 13" deep. Features a beautiful Fleur-de-lis/lily motif. There is a door/flap on the bottom that is able to tilt and allows you to dump the coals or ashes. The back is stamped 1505-24. The sides stamped 1505L and 1505R, face is stamped 1505, the bottom is stamped 24 and the door/flap is stamped 230. In Good Used Condition, shows appropriate wear for it's age.
