Each end has 3 turned columns with finial tops, the coumns are united by ornate spiral stretchers, the fender has hammered metal cladding to the inner edge to protect it against falling embers PLEASE VIEW THE MANY PICTURES BELOW THAT SHOW THE LOVELY DETAIL. I have reduced the starting prices on all my items as I need the space and they must go. Good Luck This auction is for a lovely original Bronze fire fender. This is French and is dated about 1860/1880 Napoleon III(late victorian) There item is in good condition and complete. Normal signs of use over the several decades. It is not"plated" Cast iron or spelter(regule) It is adjustable and will fit from 91cm to 78 cm with a bit of thought. It may go down to about 66cm(please ask for details if you want to use it less than 78cm and I will try to explain the way it would adjust this small) This is priced to start at a low figure. Antique French Rural Chic Fire Fender ~ Black with Brass ~ Cast Iron Foxes !
An unusual and very charming antique French fire fender. Dating from the early 1900s. with a black metal front topped with a brass rail and with hollow cast iron ends. each featuring a fox atop a decorative stand with swirly brass ornament. Although at first glance it seems the foxes are from the same mould. They are in fact different sculptures. with different body shapes and stances and on different backgrounds. A delightful detail. So as to fit a variety of fireplace widths. The fender extends by means of two bars and turn screws on the back and measures 70cm when closed and 87cm when at full width. It stands 11.5 cm high to the fox’s back. The brass knobs can also be moved towards the ends of the brass rail by unscrewing two tiny bolts at the back and rescrewing through two more holes in the base. I have done this to see which looks the ... morebetter. and I think it looks best with the rail extending a little as in the photos. A old piece. This is in nice vintage and functional condition although it does show signs of its history as is to be expected.The brass rail is very slightly bent upwards with a one or two dents and scratches in places.and the seam at the back is not fully closed all the way along. although this cannot be seen when in use. Please scroll through all my ten photos for details. Previously a little rusty I have cleaned up the iron parts with black lead grate polish and given the rail a quick going over with a metal polish. although not so much as to make it look like“new” A lovely antique fender. which will perfectly into any country house interior. in front of the fireplace or even as a decorative piece on top of a rustic wood burning stove. This is a charming piece. The style is Queen Anne Revival? most likely early 20th century. It is in very good condition, left front corner has a slight dent.And the top bar on the centre front is loose it appears to have been soldered at on time. We have never found it to be a problem. It polishes up wonderfully as it is of a good quality solid brass. And the construction is of a good quality as well. By loosening the bolts on the bottom(see photos)the entire piece can be undone. The measurements are as follows: out side length 42 inches. Inside length 37 3/4 inches, the depth out side is 12 inches, depth inside is 9 3/4inches, and the height is six inches.
