George is 14 1/2" tall by 7" wide by about 2" thick which gives him a 3 dimensional look. Total length with log holders 17 5/8" One has a chip on the outer edge of his left thigh and they both have rust but overall a nice pair being over 100 years old. They weigh 31 lbs before packing and do not disassemble for shipping. A pair of old brass andirons. Age is hard to determine. But I would think that these date to the first part of the 20th century. They screw together in pieces and mounted to a black iron rod. They appear to have been polished somewhat recently. They are a little lose, so the probably need to be taken apart and put back together(notice that the top cap of the left is a little cock-eyed) Each stands about 17" tall and their depth(with the black rod) is about 19" Please email with any questions. 2 ANTIQUE ANDIRONS Here is an interesting pair of andirons. They appear to be brass. At least the center posts do as you can see the brass under the patena and rust. The bottom leg area is showing some silver metal, too heavy and thick for aluminum, I would think. They are heavy, each weighing 11 pounds. They are rusty and may have been painted at some point. Within the patina are colors of red/pink, browns, gold and silver. The metal is thick. The back braces are cool looking. They measure 19.75" in height and 10" front to back. The back of each upright is marked A1 and a symbol I can't make out. The back bars/braces are marked D4. I would say these are very old. From the 1800's although they could be from 1900's. This is a pair of antique Bradley& Hubbard Arts and Crafts hammered cast iron andirons. The are each marked and numbered 7012.1/2. They are 15 1/2" high and 9 1/8" wide with the back part being about 21" long. They are painted a darkened gold or bronze/gold. Never having seen these before I don't know if the paint is original and not but there is some paint on the sides and back. It looks very old and great. Condition is very good with some wear to the paint and minor surface rust on the grate holders. Some of the pictures are darkened from the camera and the first ones are a little lighter to show the surface. Hard to get the exact color. They have a column style design with a large ball and finial at the top. They have an awesome patina and by the looks of them I would say these are also made of bronze as well. But I'm not sure They're in good used condition with normal wear such as some slight variation in color and a few minor scratches The only thing I really see wrong with them is one of them(see last 2 pics) has something on it. It will scratch off with your fingernail but it will also take off the patina as well and leave the bronze color underneath which will make it more noticeable. ... moreIt looks like to me that sometime ago maybe some clear plastic paper-like material stuck to it while it was hot and was never removed and changed colors with age as the bronze aged. Original pair of Peerless fireplace andirons in very good condition all parts are numbered. I am not sure if they were painted that color or maybe they are brass plated. Antique Hand Forged Iron Firedogs Andirons - prob. 1700s early 1800s primitive
I found these at a museum quality auction and fell in love because of their irregular handwork. Called firedogs or andirons these are hand forged probably late 1700s or early 1800s. Some blacksmiths played around with the tops making them appear to be the head of a dog and with the wide'stance' of the front legs they appeared to be an animal hence the name'firedogs' These have a square finishing off the front. They are irregular insofar as one leans a little making it just a little shorter than its mate- it is also just a little wider across its feet. Measurement on this one is: 13 1/2" Tall X 7 1/2" Wide X 11" front to back. The straighter one is: 14 1/2" Tall X 6 1/2" Wide X 11" front to back. They are. However, even on the log rests which are about 5" off the floor. They are clean but ... morethere is pitting and just a light amount of surface rust- I have wiped them down and personally like their look just as they are. Make sure you look at all the pictures so that you can see all the evidence of the handwork and their irregularities. I love great primitives such as these that show evidence of the maker's handwork.
