ANTIQUE GLASS DOOR KNOB ASSEMBLY W/ BRASS KEY PLATES, SARGENT LOCK AND ONE KEY
We found this item on a very old door stored in the barn. This estate has yielded many locks and hardware pieces. This is the first one we have found all intact, it was on an old warped solid wooden door that belonged to one of the houses that was at one time on this estate. Here I have a Sargent lock mechanism with two solid glass door knobs. The glass door knobs are free of chips or cracks or any damage. The door this was on has been in the barn for at least 70 years, the house it came from was built around the turn of the century. There are bubbles trapped in the glass door knobs. I had found a can of antique BRASSO brass cleaner. Which I used on all the metal pieces of this assembly, and the brass came out really nice. Being an amateur clock restorer. I took the Sargent lock apart and put oil inside, the ONE key we found with this now ... moreworks great at moving the" deadbolt" back and forth. Nice intact find for a special door in an Antique/ Vintage house. The door knobs measure 2' wide X 1 1/8 deep. Other measurements are in the pictures. Check out my! Antique Sargent Wrought Steel Door Knob c.1890
Item description Antique Sargent wrought steel door knob c.1890. This is a nice knob. Showing average wear with some light pitting, but no rust. Originally, there would have been a bronze finish, of which small traces remain.This is a passage size knob. 2 1/4" in diameter and uses a standard 5/16" square spindle. Condition All of my pieces have been carefully cleaned with attention given to preserving original finishes where they remain intact. Many pieces fall victim to wire brushing and high speed polishing which only results in a rough pitted surface and erosion of the sharpness and detail of the pattern. Super shiny isn't always a good thing. Occasionally I may offer pieces that have suffered this fate but it will be noted in the description. Expect my offerings to be in clean good working order without hidden or undisclosed ... moremechanical flaws. Broken or missing parts unless otherwise noted. Do remember that these pieces are 100- 130 years old and many are just coming out of service so wear and tear is almost always present. The set consists of 1 bronze pull with 2 backplates and 1 thumb latch, 1 bronze thumbturn, 1 glass knob with a bronze shank(base) and 2-piece steel spindle(connecting rod) 1 bronze mortise cylinder plate, 1 bronze rosette, 1 steel mortise lock with bronze faceplate, 1 bronze cylinder mortise w/anti-theft collar, 1 bronze strike plate for the door jamb, and 2 securing nuts and bolts for the pull. All bronze parts are solid. Heavy, thick cast bronze, not stamped bronze or plated iron. The lock is fully reversible and could accommodate the swing of any door. If it is not functional, you could also buy a new cylinder for the same price. At the point of salvage. The set was found dirty and heavily tarnished. Since then. We've cleaned and polished the set to the best of our ability. All parts are in great shape with only a few nicks and scratches here and there. Which are typical for hardware this old. However, there are no breaks, cracks, chips, dents, or deep scratches. We opened, inspected, and sprayed WD-40 on and around all internal parts of the mortise lock to facilitate their movement. It operates smoothly. The set looks nice in the photos. But it’s beauty and quality cannot be fully appreciated until you see it in person. The knobs are solid brass. The mortise plate and strikers are solid brass. The back plates are solid brass. This is a rather large and heavy set. Meant to be secure for an exterior door. I didn't polish these as some people prefer the aged patina on them. But they would polish up beautifully. There is a threaded lock that was in it. But no key, so it would have to be re-keyed or replaced. A brass one would be more fitting. The deadbolt locks from the inside and the locking latch works. Antique Sargent "T" Design Wrought Bronze Door Knob Set c.1894
Item description Antique Sargent"T" design passage door knob set c.1894. Sargent occasionally gave a design a name. But as in this case, they assigned a letter designation. These are wrought bronze with a very nice copper finish and there is little wear evident, amazing for a pair of 100+ year old knobs. Sargent was one of the top hardware manufacturers of the late 19th and early 20th century. The knobs are 2 1/4" in diameter and use a standard size 5/16" spindle. If your going to spend real money on a vintage hardware should expect no broken or missing parts. Pieces that have not been abraded and diminished by sand blasting, wire brushing or excessive polishing and at a minimum the ability to make a return. Condition All of my pieces have been carefully cleaned with attention given to preserving original finishes where ... morethey remain intact. Many pieces fall victim to wire brushing and high speed polishing which only results in a rough pitted surface and erosion of the sharpness and detail of the pattern. Super shiny isn't always a good thing. Occasionally I may offer pieces that have suffered this fate but it will be noted in the description. Expect my offerings to be in clean good working order without hidden or undisclosed mechanical flaws. Broken or missing parts unless otherwise noted. Antique, door locksets made by"Sargent& Co. of New Haven, CT circa 1905. Each set consists of 2 bronze knobs, 2 bronze escutcheons, 1 steel mortise lock with brass faceplate, 1 working key, 1 bronze strike plate for the door jamb, and 1 spindle with 2 setscrews to connect the knobs. All bronze/brass parts are solid, bronze, not plated steel. Originally, all bronze/brass parts were nickel plated, however, some of the plating wore off over the years leaving ... morethe parts with a nice, distressed finish. The knobs and plates have a lovely design. Which Sargent called, Aromas. The sets were salvaged from Long Island. NY. We found the sets partially painted, dirty, and unevenly tarnished(see last photo) Since then, we removed the paint, and cleaned and polished all parts, being as careful as possible to preserve the nickel plating. We also found the escutcheons slightly bent. We did out best to straighten them out. But they are not 100% straight. However, once fastened to the door with screws, the plates will lay flush. All parts are in great shape with only the light nicks and scratches. That you would expect to find on hardware 100+ years old. There are no breaks. Cracks, chips, dents, or deep scratches. About the locks: The locks of both sets are reversible and could accommodate the swing of any door. Since these are high-end locksets. The locks are much more sophisticated than other locks produced around their time. Most antique. Interior locks only have only one tumbler, but these have three! It takes us about an hour to make a key for one of these locks. We could make more for $12/key-email us after the auction if you are interested.

Exceptional~Antique Sargent Bronze/Brass Entry Door Knob & Lock Set c.1880-1890s
Absolutely gorgeous Victorian/Art Nouveau era Entry Door Knob and Lock Set. Elegant ornate floral motif with foliage on the knobs. Tiny flowers on the knob rosette, and swags, ribbons and fans on the backplate. Cast bronze backplate is stamped with Sargeant& Co and the numbers 7696 and 7694 and 696 and VR at the bottom. Perhaps an 1894/1896 patent date? Fabulous condition. Only missing a set screw for one of the knobs. The spindle has an interesting swiveling joint in the center.not sure why. Lockset is cast iron with bronze or brass faceplate. Buttons, and latch, and deadbolt. Spindle is cast iron. I think the knobs and rosette are bronze like the backplate. But they may be brass. The color matches, nonetheless. Backplate measures 10-1/2" x 2-3/4. Antique/vintage 12-faceted clear glass crystal fluted door knob pair on spindle. With brass shanks and New York style back-plates of heavy-duty stamped sheet brass with skeleton keyhole, but no key. Plates are separated by heavy cast iron black enamel-coated mortise lock, embossed: Sargent New Haven. Conn. U.S.A. Complete antique knob and door hardware set for restoration project or period home. Fluted glass knobs were popular in the 1920s and 1930s. This was recently purchased from the estate sale of a 1930s-era Sullivan County/Catskill Mountains bungalow colony in Rock Hill. NY that was going out of business. A beautiful piece of by-gone Borscht Belt history! Dimensions: Knobs: 2" diameter; Spindle hard to measure in knob. Appears approx. 1-3/4” L x 5/16” Shank diam. approx. 7/16” Back-plate rosette diam. approx. 11/16” Back-plates ... more2-1/2” W x 7-1/2” L; Mortise lock 9/16” thick. 3-9/16” tall, 3-1/8” deep, with lock face plate 7/8” W x 5-1/4” L. Condition: Crystal doorknobs are in near perfect condition with high clarity to glass. May be leaded. Knobs are a little loose on shanks. Spindle fits securely into shanks. Lock will need servicing and surfaces need cleaning up- brass is lightly rusted and tarnished. And there are traces of white paint down mortise lock face plate and along back-plate edges. Antique Vintage Standing Lion Bronze Sargent Door Knob set circa 1927
These knobs and escutcheons. And this set is nearly un-used, were originally from the Stevens hotel in Chicago(they were salvaged when the hotel underwent major renovations in the 80's) The Stevens hotel, at the time when it opened in 1927, was the largest, most grand, hotel in the world! These beautiful door knobs graced the entire hotel and the standing lion can still be found in some of the decorative bronze work in the building, now the Hilton Chicago. Each knob weighs about 8.5 ounces and is about 2 5/8" in diameter and has about a 2 1/2" projection. The matching knob escutcheons(the knob escutcheon with the button in it allowed an employee to check if the deadbolt was engaged thereby not even trying their keys and not disturbing the guest inside) and cylinder escutcheon are included as well as the spindle(the piece the ... moreknobs screw on to) These pieces are from an era when things were made with pride to detail and these pieces are in GREAT, though naturally a little worn, condition and are quite rare and becoming rarer as the days go by. These knobs, etc. can be made to work in nearly any mortise lock new or old if your handy.
