LOT 8 ANTIQUE HARDWARE DOORKNOBS-PLATES AND LOCKS-EARLE-BRASS&GLASS
This listing is for 8 sets of antique door knobs with 16 back plates; and 8 lock assemblys. The doorknobs are all matching in design. However 5 have brass on both ends; 2 have brass on one end and chrome on the other and one has chrome on both ends. The back plates match the ends; there are 12 brass back plates; 3 chrome back plates and one round chrome back plate. I have posted a photo of the chrome set by itself as it also has a different lock set. The locks are marked EARLE. The approximate measurements are as follow: doorknob 6 inches long; glass knob 1 3/4 inches across; plates 6 1/8 inches long; 1 5/8 inches at widest point; lock 5 1/4 inches long; 7/8 inches wide and the round chrome plate is 2 inches across with lock for this being 1 3/4 inches long; 7/8 inches wide and finally the lock set is 3 5/8 inches wide and 3 1/8 inches deep ... morewith the brass part on the lock being 5 1/4 inches ling and 7/8 inches wide. These sets are in working order and in good condition for there age. They could use some cleaning; there is some paint on the edges and the chrome ones seem to have some slight rust on them. I have three keys which fit the locks and the locks work smoothly. The all chrome unit has it's own turn key and works smoothly( I think this unit was for a bathroom door) The glass knobs are in good condition with no breaks or chips. Penn Antique Restoration. 2 avail. Vintage Art Deco Door Set Glass Knobs Plate Lock Key. Lovely. Vintage lockset made around the turn of the previous century. Each set consists of 2 glass knobs, 2 stamped iron escutcheons, 1 iron mortise lock with 1 working key, 1 steel strike plate for the door jamb, and 1 spindle with 2 setscrews. The majority of the brass plating wore away over the years leaving the surfaces of the parts with a nice, distressed finish. At the point of salvage. All parts were painted, dirty, and unevenly tarnished(see last photo) Since then, we've removed the paint, and cleaned and polished all parts. The sets are in great shape with only a few small nicks and scratches here and there. Otherwise. There are no breaks, cracks, chips, scratches, or gouges. Each lock was opened. This is a large lot of antique door hardware. There are 15 sets of knobs.5 loose knobs,1 handle latch,12 brass back plates.and 4 lock assemblys. There are 7 glass sets some are purple in color and some are a cream or light yellow. There are only a couple of very small edge chips that I only detected by running my finger around the edge of the knobs. Most are perfect. There are 4 extra glass knobs. They are all good except the one farthest back in the group photo has a chip inside. There are 8 Brass sets with all of the knobs matching but one. There is one extra brass knob. There are 12 brass back plates. The two large are marked Penn CS508 on the back. The other 10 all match. There are 4 lock assemblys with two matching. Threaded spindles, back plates, mortise locksets, strike plates, and a fair amount of brass screws in a few different sizes and shapes. They only thing not included in this collection are the Skeleton Keys for the locksets. As with most antique hardware and knobs, these pieces have old white paint on them.some just a spot or two, others a a full brush stoke. The paint is easy to remove from the knobs and the face plates. One of the glass knobs has some surface scratches on the end of the knob, otherwise eggsellent condition with no chips or cracks. ... moreA couple of the brass face plates and rosettes might have a dint or minor dent- nothing major, but noted for accuracy. There are a total of 23 antique clear glass door knobs and a single old hollow metal door knob. I was able to assemble 7 complete door knob sets. One set has been finished in chrome on one side and has matching hardware(a strike plate. Latch and rosette face plate, all in silver with silver screws) Two of the connector loops on the actual latch mechanisms are bent and need repair or replacement. The door knob sets that I put together include the following parts: 2 glass door knobs( 2 of the door knobs are missing one brass tightening screw each) a threaded spindle with latch mechanism in the middle a door latch a strike plate to match 2 brass rosette face plates for the knobs 8 screws. 4 rounded smaller ones for the rosettes& 4 flat top brass screws for the latch and strike plates There is a large door knob and lockset that I pieced together– I am not sure if I put it together right. A few plates look like someone put a light coat of stain or something over it(probably when painting the door they were on) I did see a cleaning tip for hardware that has paint on it and they put the hardware in a crock pot on low for a few hours and when the pieces were removed the paint came off easily(though I am not sure if it is recommended or advised to do this to clean bronze) These are offered"as found" They are all in really good shape and as far as I can tell function properly(the stop springs back when depressed and released) I would love to keep them myself but my house was built in 1942 and they really do need to go in a house that is much older ... morethan mine. There aren't any keys for me to test the ones with locks(the 2 larger unmarked one's) One is rusted pretty bad and not sure of the lock will release but the latch works. I am unsure if they are brass or bronze but if I had to guess, bronze. The patina is darker than brass with some green so I suppose some copper. There is surface rust here and there, some worse than others, but I think it can easily be cleaned on most. One of the plates is pretty rus ty and a portion of one of the knobs is corroded with some rust and green. These four handsome sets are enough to fit four doors and date to the late 19th century. The eight beautiful doorknobs have a vernacular Victorian design that was designed by Penn Hardware. Wrought iron, they pair beautifully with the ornate rosettes and keyhole plates. Antique Ornate Victorian Lot Cast Bronze/Brass/Iron Door Knobs/Plates/Locks, etc
This is a total of 52 pieces of antique door hardware consisting of beautiful solid heavy cast brass. Bronze, cast iron, some copper and brass swirl plates and knobs. Including pair of porcelain knobs and one amethyst glass and brass knob(surface crack on face. Please see above description of noted flaws due to age wear and photos. There are 22 knobs, 17 door plates, 11 locks including Mortisse, etc. plus 2 turn knobs and one large brass lock face plate. In this lot of hardware there are 6 full individually matching complete sets and four highly detailed highlighted cast iron plates by Eastlake. Also one set of door knobs of shining white metal I believe to be vintage Mercury knobs. Many ways to match up miscellaneous plates and door knobs with extra locks included to create more sets. This lot could almost fill an entire house. As for the ... morerestored finish which has most pieces in their gorgeous high lustered original patinas. I have 16 years experience in antique metal restoration and in the case of these pieces I felt that the best way to put the hardware to use in it's best finish was to refinish them. This is because most of these pieces came to me with either layers of paint or heavy dull lacquer as was commonly done in the late 1800's to early 1900's. Some pieces were heavily rusted. At any rate I left ALL OF THE PIECES UN-LACQUERED OR VARNISHED AND THEY WILL SHORTLY NATURALLY RETURN TO A SOFT MELLOW PATINA which can be kept up with hand polishing if desired which is also the best thing to do for the metal. If the high luster is desired the pieces can be lacquered to retain that finish. There are a few of the locks that have not been refinished. These pieces are various makers such as Eastlake. Yale and Towne, Russell& Irvin, Mortisse, Craftsman. All in the desirable lovely Ornate Victorian style or Art Nouveau. If seriously interested in this lot please email if you want further detail. I don't have a great description of what exactly the parts are, but these all came off our 1929 Tudor style house when we got some things renovated.
