This is an absolutely wonderful and very rare find! This listing is for a vintage Jerusalem Cross sterling silver ring. The Jerusalem Cross design is also referred to as the Crusaders Cross because it was on the papal banner given to the Crusaders by Pope Urban II for the First Crusade. The larger center Jerusalem Cross has four arms which symbolize the four directions. And the belief that Jerusalem was the spiritual center of the earth. The four smaller crosses on the Jerusalem Cross ring are said to represent the four books of the Gospel. This ring features a bas relief Jerusalem Cross framed in an Omega Symbol set into sterling silver. It is very rare to find this design with an Omega symbol.The ring is hallmarked"STER"and some other marks I'm not familiar with, and is a size 6. Up for your consideration. F rom a recent estate, a beautiful cross from Israel. It measures approx. 2" by 1 7/8" east to west. It has a decorative and huge bale. Ready for your chain! The history of this Christian symbol dates back to the Crusades. There are several interpretations of the meaning but the common understanding is that the larger cross is symbolic of Christ and the smaller crosses are symbols of the spread of the gospel of the church to the four corners of the earth. One variation is that the smaller crosses may be symbolic of the apostolic writings of Matthew. Mark, Luke and John. Since the 1950's this iconic Christian symbol has become a popular and inspirational souvenir of a trip to The Holy Land. Though I have seen hundreds of variations, I have never found one that was themed! This cross is double sided ... moreand the scenes depicted on the reverse side appear to be sites connected to the nativity of Jesus. On the left there is a city view of Bethlehem. I think the bottom scene is the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth. The scene on the right is a nativity scene.
