When Canadian troops and British Commandos made their now famous'reconnaissance in force' against the harbor town of Dieppe on 19th August 1942. They were supported and protected by the largest array of Royal Air Force aircraft ever seen in WW-II until that time. Air Marshal, Trafford Leigh-Mallory, AOC of Fighter Command's Number 11 Group, was given command of the air operation and had 46 Spitfire, 8 Hurricane, 3 Typhoon and 4 Mustang Squadrons under his direction, as well as 7 Boston and Blenheim squadrons of 2 Group and Fighter Command. On 19th August Leigh-Mallory commanded more squadrons than were available to Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding at any one time during the Battle of Britain two years previously. This book provides a detailed, minute by minute, hour by hour, blow by blow account of operations on a day which has become accepted as the one on which the Royal Air Force fought its greatest air battle. The RAF flew nearly 3,000 sorties: the Luftwaffe 945, Air combat, ground attacks, bombing and smoke laying missions cost the RAF over 100 aircraft and the Luftwaffe nearly 50. Up for auction is my. BIO: Erich Rudorffer WWII Luftwaffe Ace Pilot 222 victories pilot. Flew 1000 plus combat missions, The seventh highest scoring ace pilot in victories during WWII, flew with JG 2, JG 7, JG 54, Recipient of 3 German Knights Cross May 1st, 1941, April 11th, 1944, January 26th, 1945. Flew during the Battle of Britain, Operation Cerberus, Allied landings at Dieppe in August 1942, Sicily, Tunisia and the Eastern Front. Mr. Rudorffer began his Luftwaffe service on Nov. 1st, 1939 when posted to JG 2, his first victory was over a Curtiss Hawk 75 on mat 14th, 1940. In the following year up to May 1st, 1941 his score had risen during the Battle of Britain to 19 victories, after which he was awarded the Ritterkreuz. He was appointed Staffelkapitan of 6/JG 2 and transferred to Africa, on Feb. 9th 1942 he shot down 8 British aircraft ... morein 32 minutes. He then, was posted to the Channel front where he scored his 73rd and 74th victories before transferring to JG 54 and the Russian front. There his score ran up quickly, scoring 13 Russian aircraft in 17 minutes on Nov. 6th. He was awarded the Oakleaves to the RK on April 11th, 1944 at 134 victories, and the Swords on Jan. 26th, 1945. Transferred on Jan. 15th, 1945 to command 1/JG 7, He became one of the first Jet aces by scoring 12 victories, including 10 four engine Bombers in the ME 262. Rudorffer had several multiple Victory days, flew over 1000 missions scoring a total of 224 victories, placing him 7th on the all time victory list. THIS IS AN AUTHENTIC HAND AUTOGRAPHED 3x5 CARD. Absolutely stunning pieces possibly from as far back as the 17th up to the early 19th century. This is a French Dieppe wax seal. Beautifully hand carved design of a Forearm with Clenched Fist holding a snake with its body entwined around the rest of the forearm. The base is accented with lovely Acanthus leaf design. This is set on a gold base with two hallmarks. One resembles the French Eagle, the other we can not make out possibly the makers mark? Dieppe Fabulous Antique Carved Dieppe Pin Cushion/ Disc French* Circa 1820 This lovely wheel style pin cushion is graced with a finely carved bouquet of roses. Violets, pansys and forget me nots. It has a beautiful old patina and grain pattern and looks like a Dieppe piece to me. T he bottom disc is plain. Pins were stuck in the"sandwich" silk cushion around the center and it has some old handmade coil headed pins. It is in excellent condition with no chips. Cracks or other damage and it measures almost 1 3/4" in diameter. The detail is gorgeous and amazingly detailed for such a small space. England at Xmas, 1942. Lance Corporal Brian Joseph Mullen was a talented self-taught artist who served with the Royal Engineers and No 4 Commando during WWII. He was killed on D-Day. At the age of 33, at Pegasus Bridge while going back to help a wounded Commando comrade. He is buried at the Hermanville War Cemetery in France. All very delicately carved in a very detailed three dimensional high relief work. The piece was probably carved in Dieppe some of the finest carving were done there in the early 19 th century stunningly detailed. Rare, Beautiful,and Lovely are just some of the adjectives that came to mind upon finding this little accessory case recently purchased at an antique shop while away visiting friends in upstate New York. Made of carved faux iv-ry no doubt from dieppe with the craftsmanship to match. This piece has many features one might need while out on the town- ie: Mirror, Comb, Money compartment, Pick, Pen and Note pad( note pad is no longer contained within. all neatly packaged in away as to not crowd ones overcoat pocket or purse. This necassaire measures approx. 3.5" by 2.375" and has a floral and leaf design on the front cover, all dates to the mid to late 1800's and although does show seperation to the blue silk interior and age related wear it is a wonderful antique find.
