We found this amazing piece of ornamental ... morearchitecture at a recent estate sale! The age is unknown but its believed to date to the late 1800s. Exactly what it is we do not know- a corbel? a ship's decorative support? temple ornamentation? Unfortunately. It's history was unavailable and our attempts to research the piece have produced nothing. We do know it's Chinese- made of wood and hand carved with incredible detail! Hopefully someone looking knows what it is- or(like ourselves) just finds it an intriguing conversation piece! It does have a relatively substantial amount of wear and tear to the wood from age and exposure to elements- the pictures provided show the actual condition- there are multiple cracks. Chips, erosion and discoloration of the wood, and what may be insect damage. The decorative carvings are fragile with some pieces having chipped away over the years but overall it is still an amazing piece of art that with some TLC could make for a wonderful addition to any collection or perhaps can be repurposed for more practical use! It measures ~ 14 1/2" in length. ~ 5 5/8" wide, and stands ~ 7 7/8" tall. Not only is this a large piece- it is also a heavy piece so shipping costs should be taken into consideration when bidding! This set appears to be a single Corinthian column cap salvage piece that has been cut in half and meticulously stripped& refinished with a wax coat. Both halves exhibit exceptional hand carved classical details in an unknown beautifully grained& heavy solid wood. The backsides of each have had 2 notched hanging brackets added allowing these very stylish pieces to be displayed on the wall as corbel sconces. Exact age is unknown. Antique Carved Wood Architectural Piece. Wall Sconce Up for your consideration is this nice antique wood wall sconce or light bracket/arm. Gold or gilt in color. Has a wall base with an arm extending from the base with a carved laurel detail, could have been an electrified piece at one time with a threaded metal tubing opening at the back and at the top of the extended piece, there is a small piece taken out of the base(see pic) and it has a crack at the inside of the arm close to the base that is cracked through but still intact although it is loose. Wonderful group of four primitive antique architectural carved wood plinth blocks including a teardrop shape flat back trim piece measuring 10" tall and 2-1/4" deep; a triple ringed bulls-eye plinth measuring about 6-1/4" square by 1-1/4" deep; another bulls-eye or rosette plinth measuring 5-1/4" tall. 4-1/2" wide and 1" deep; and a lovely and an unusual elongated plinth or corner block carved down with a ribbed three leaf clover measuring 8" tall, 4-7/8" wide and 1" deep. All bear original old paint full of chipping, rubbing, paint shrinkage and loss- does not detract a bit. I've been displaying these on my mantle for years- they have a neat architectural look and would be a fun addition to any collection or home! Antique Gothic Architectural Element 1800s French Carved Wood Reliquary Corbel
This most unusual architectural element of the early to middle 1800s is hand carved from rich. Dark brown mahogany and shows handsawn marks on the reverse. It is most likely European in origin and measures 18” tall x 30” wide x 6” deep and appears to have comprised the face of a corner shelf/bracket that supported a carved statue. Its center features a 10 3/8” diameter roundel with 6 1/8” inner diameter and a depth varying from 2 ½”3 ½” deep. I conjecture this area held a relic of the saint whose figure was displayed on top and the varying depth of the hole suggests a downward angle that allowed the object displayed to be more easily viewed from below. In any event, the surface is beautifully carved by a master craftsman and the surface retains the original rich French Polish surface. It is grimy with no bad losses…just some trimming ... moreand drilled holes on the bottom tip where its was incorporated into other woodwork elements. Originally, only masonry was given the corbel name, while wooden structures of the same purpose were called"braggers" or"tassels. Progressively, the corbel moniker began being applied to a wider range of materials, and today, anything with a load bearing or an aesthetic function which resembles the original stone corbel is given the name. Wood corbels have long been an integral part of architectural design in China, where together with unique structural elements such as interlocking wooden brackets( dougong) they are one of the most important elements in traditional Chinese architecture. While dougong were originally structural. And became decorative, ... morecorbels were seen as mainly decorative, though also structural. However, the focus slowly changed and design became a primary feature. Decorative wood corbels offered Chinese master craftsmen a tremendous versatility in design opportunity, with a myriad of possibilities for both the style of the carving and the subject itself. Depictions included folkloric characters such as a Budai monk, or deities and dragons- to a cluster of grapes or a delicately carved leaf- as can be seen in these two fine naturalistic carved pieces, which feature foliate motifs and pastoral landscape designs.
