Walter Hubbard, and Orson and Chitten Hatch began in Meriden, Connecticut in 1852 as Bradley, Hatch& Company. Clocks were the sole product of the newly formed company. When the Hatch brothers sold their interests in the firm two years later. Nathaniel Bradley, William Bradley and Walter Hubbard formed a company which they named simply Bradley and Hubbard. By 1856, they were producing call bells and sewing machines, but clocks continued to be the main line of production throughout the 1850's and 1860's. Many northern manufacturers prospered immensely during the Civil War due to the expanded market west of the Mississippi and increased foreign exports. Bradley and Hubbard was no exception, adding the production of flags, hoop skirts, spring measuring tapes and match safes during the war years. The discovery of oil in Pennsylvania in 1859 also had a great impact on the product line of Bradley& Hubbard with the decision to begin production of kerosene burning lamps. By 1871. Kerosene virtually replaced whale oil for heating and illumination and new ways of burning it more efficiently were needed. Superb Gilt Bronze Clock Set ~ Dragons. ~ English/ French- Circa 1880 ~. ~~ Excellent condition. Fully overhauled ~~. A very large and impressive original antique gilt bronze clock set. Of the most superb quality, by Swinden& Sons of Temple Street Birmingham. Two dragons stand guard. Supporting the movement and dial held aloft in a drum. A finely fretted panel allows the pendulum to be glimpsed swinging within the case. A cherub clutching laurel wreaths sits to the base. Candelabra are modelled as a dragon holding the three branches as a burning torch é. The modelling of the dragons is particularly well executed. It is an English made case and candelabra. Superbly modelled, finished and gilded. The movement is the highest quality square plate Pendule De Paris movement. Sourced from France by Swindens with their Paris mark on the ... morebackplate, an English movement would have been too large to fit the design. There is a diamond registration mark, issued by the British Patent office, on both candelabra dating the design to 1877. The large dial is also bronze with 12 individual enamel cartouches and blued steel hands. The French movement is of the highest quality and is fitted with a pin-pallet escapement and rack striking. It is the square plated version of the Pendule De Pari s design with four pillars and heavy plates. The Swinden& Sons mark is on the backplate. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. It is made of the most beautifully variegated, specimen green onyx. This is mounted with finely modelled ormolu(fine gilded brass/ bronze) in the Louis XVI style. To the top of the clock is an onyx urn with ormolu handles and finial. Candelabra have carved onyx stems with twin ormolu branches of acanthus. The dial is enamel on copper. Decorated with delicate floral swags between the numbers. The hands are finely fretted gilt brass. The French movement is of high quality and has the Samuel Marti mark on the backplate along with the retailers mark H&F Paris. The clock set is in excellent condition one candle stick has a old hair line and part of the bronze ornament around the front is broken off look at the pictures i have the part so it can be repaired. As stated above the clock is running and chiming on the hour and half you will get the original pendulum and key. The clock is working at this present time but may need to be adjusted when it arrives. This clock has been in the same family for the last 60 years. The owner paid 1800 German marks translates into $1800 us dollars. The clock measures 19.5" tall by 12" long by 7" wide the candelabras measure 18.5" tall by 5.5" long by 4" wide. This is an absolutely stunning French repeater carriage clock. By a famous maker Brunelot(mark: B" in a circle. This clock has the front. Two sides and the top covered in champlevé enamel and gilt brass. The enamel roman numerals are very intricately hand-painted and the front and back are protected by beveled glass. This clock is very well made and it is very heavy for its size. This clock comes with two keys and although it is in working condition. Antique 1880's French Black& Red Marbel Mantel Pedestal Clock Victorian Marked on the dial" Le Boutiller& Co. Union Square, New York" Le Boutiller& Co was a high end retailer/importer of fancy goods for the ultra rich of the Uuion Square area of Manhattan in the Victorian Era. They were close to the original Tiffany's, Reed& Barton and other fancy stores. They sold a lot of items but they also specialized in Marbel Clocks from France. The dial is also red and black marbel and is carved Clock is dated circa 1880- 1890 The clock is a mantle clock but is technically called a pedestal clock because it was used as a base for a statue that went on top of it. That is why the clock has a hole drilled in the top- dead center. I have a nice LARGE antique bronze flame finial that I am willing to give to the winning ... morebidder to put in the hole as an unsecured hole-filler(just sits in the hole- see next to last photo) just ask for it- see photos. Red and Black marbel The front of the clock has a few small chips and flea bites- the worst are is shown in the last photo The case rear has a few repaired cracks There are two small diagonally oriented matching holes on both sides that only go through the thin top piece of black marble. There is green felt on the bottom of the clock French movement is a high quality movement that strikes bell on the hour and half hour- but the movement is not marked. Antique E.N. Welch Oak Mantle Clock C 1880 with key in excellent condition!
This is a Welch oak kitchen mantle clock from around 1880. The wood is in fabulous shape. The clock has been recently serviced, the main spring had to be replaced and the glass was missing so it is new. Everything else is original. The dial is a bit worn and dirty, but I do not restore dials. I had to adjust the door close mechanism, the original piece broke off, so I used the old piece and adapted it so it works great to keep the door closed. It looks just like the old one. The pattern on the glass is a bit long for the door. It fits correctly over the face of the clock, but it is too long for the door of the clock, the pattern disappears into the door frame. The original key is there and the clock runs and chimes on the half hour. You can adjust the run time faster or slower from the pendulum. It's a really great looking clock as well ... moreas a nice working one. And it's a nice old piece to add to your collection or to add some atmosphere to your home. The bodies are made of faience(pottery) Very delicately decorated with scenes of a young couple in a country setting with a pale blue ground. Each piece is signed by the artist, F Perouche. One candelabrum has the gentleman reading a love letter delivered by a dove. On the other candelabrum she also reads a love letter and on the front of the clock they meet in a country park. The bodies are mounted with gilt brass in the Rococo style. The clock stands on acanthus bracket feet with a large and elaborate Rococo boat shaped urn to the top. Candelabra are conforming in style with four branches and the original snuffers. The dial is ... morestunning. Enamel on copper, delicately painted with a cherub on a pale blue ground. It is complete with original blued steel hands. The French movement is by Japy Freres and is of this makers usual high quality. The Japy Freres mark is on the movement backplate. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. It is Baroque in style. A beautiful waisted shape to the case with light, fretted panels above and below the dial. The pendulum can be glimpsed swinging within the case. It is decorated with laurel swags and a large urn with a pineapple finial. Candelabra are matching in style with elaborate scrolling arms. It is finely modelled in gilded brass, the gilding is in excellent bright condition. The dial is enamel on copper. It is sculptured to resemble a cartouche dial and is lettered in roman numerals for the hours with a separate Arabic minute ring. The rear door is also glazed to allow the movement to be seen. Offering a beautiful antique Seth Thomas Arch Top mantle clock. This circa 1880 spring driven clock strikes a gong for the hour. This lovely clock has a walnut case with burled walnut on front panel. Lower portion and rim around dial. The burl in lower section has some roughness. There is some minor chips to the veneer on lower front edge. This is barely noticeable. There is a chip in the lower right corner and inside corner(see photo. The original Seth Thomas movement has been cleaned. Adjusted and lubricated with synthetic clock lubricant. This movement is in very good operating condition. The original Seth Thomas Roman numeral dial is in very good condition. There is some paint loss near the holding screws and the winding arbors. The hands appear to be newer replacements. This clock has a locking latch on the side to lock the front door. ... moreThis is locked with winding key. According to the internet such watch clocks were used by Life Saving Service surfmen in their patrols along the shore to log in their rounds and assure that all of the route was covered. This is very fine and original French 19 th century repeating carriage clock by eminent maker Alfred Drocourt of Paris. France circa 1880. It is in working condition and comes with the original key. It has an 8 day striking and repeating movement with the original platform lever escapement. There is an enamel dial with Roman numerals which is set within a well and engraved around the dial. There is substantial gilt brass case with reeded columns and plain capitals. It is 8 inches tall including handle that lifts or flattens. The clock bears the trademark of Drocourt between the plates of the movement. This clock is numbered 26092. And it has glass on the top and 3 sides so that you can see the clock works. The chimes in make on the hour are quite charming! c.1880 New Haven 8 Day Anglo-American Wall Clock- Wonderful Banded Inlay Work A very fine Anglo-American inlaid wall clock. Beautiful example of the English case with an American movement(New Haven in this case) which was exported to England and mounted in an English inlaid case and sold to the English market. This is a very nice example of clocks made from the 1850's. Featuring English cases with American(New Haven) hour-striking movements. While there were thousands made, very few of them are around today in as good a condition as this clock. The unusual feature in the clock is the use of beautiful rosewood veneer on the scrolled base of the clock. The 8 day New Haven movement features a count wheel strike on the hour. Original on Arc De Triomphe in Paris Great Grand Tour item Wonderful Large Marble and white metal clock of François Rude's. The Departure of the Volunteers(The Marseillaise) the statue on the Arc de Triomphe French. Circa 1880, 25-1/2 Inches high x 17-1/2 Wide x 6 Deep This clock is modeled after Francois Rude's famous sculpture that is on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. This clock could have been made as a grand tour item. A collectible memento someone could purchase as a souvenir of their trip to France. Grand tour items were very popular in the second half of the 19th century and were usually of terrific quality. The only flaw to this theory is that the clock is quite large, marble and very heavy so it is nothing anyone ... moreever there in with their luggage. The following is an article with a little bit of history on Rude and the symbolism and iconography of the piece that I pulled from an art history blog I found on a website. The clock mechanism does appear to be original but is in need of servicing. The clock is not running but it seems to all be there. It needs to be seen by a competent clock repair man but it is not a complicated movement so it should not require anything too dramatic.
