Previously unseen& very rare Japanese Samurai hand painted& hand written manuscript set(2 volumes) On the operation& use of gunpowder and, more specifically, BO-HIYA& HIYA-ZUTSU(Fire Arrows) used in battle, KOKA 2 = 1845. The BO-HIYA were launched from wide-bore cannons, matchlocks, mortars, and the rockets or projectiles had the appearance of arrows with fins. The Samurai would ignite these devices with a fuse made from incendiary rope. These rare volumes go into great detail to explain these devices which were very effective in battle, but dangerous to operate. Each volume measures 7 X 9 1/4 inches and there are a total of 171 pages with many fine illustrations. Original covers& title slips, contents complete, wormage, poor condition, but very rare& GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC. NOTE: These volumes were too large for my ... morescanner. We locate only 6 copies available worldwide. Ranging as high as $1,500.00. CONDITION: Bindings are tight. Text is clean and neat with no toning; inner joints intact; no sign of former owner. All plates are crisp& bright. Covers are clean; volume 2 shows a couple of brownish superficial rubs from contact with the other volume. The spines are all there, but one can't help but notice the leather of the hinges shows rubbing and wear, as well as the extremes of the spines. We have taken the liberty of applying a dose of PH-buffering potassium lactate solution(available from TALAS Technical Library Service. NYC) to the hinges and extremes to neutralize acidity, so the leather doesn't deteriorate. However, we have refrained from trying to recolor the rubbed areas ~ a green dye might minimize the color contrast, but we'd sooner leave that up to a professional restorer.after all, our purpose here isn't to hide faults, but to point them out! Volumes 1 and 2 of Campbell's Illustrated History of the World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago. Illinois was published by Sessler& Dungan, Philadelphia, in 1894. The matching elephant size folio each measures approximately 15-1/2" X 11" There are many black/white pictures of people and places connected to the exposition that included over 50,000 vendors and planning of gigantic scale. Both illustrations and subjects are indexed. Both volumes are from a private collection. They are unmarked and unfoxed. The pages are all in good condition. Volume One- 326 page. More wear and soiling to front cover, interior spine shows signs of weakening at both front and back inside the covers, title page is nearly all loose but is present and otherwise undamaged.
