The fabric is usable, but it needs to be cleaned as it is dirty. Look at the size of the spindles on the solid oak chair. It is an oversized chair. It is heavy duty. It has the patented recognizable Hunzinger spring mechanism. They often have the paper label underneath, but I am sure this one is gone. This chair is all tight, sturdy and is in tiger sawn oak. Antique PLATFORM ROCKER - Beautiful Wood, Brushed Green Velvet Fabric
This is a lovely ANTIQUE PLATFORM ROCKER with BEAUTIFUL WOOD and GREEN BRUSHED VELVET FABRIC. This rocking chair has been in my family for years. Belonging to either my grandparents or my great grandparents. I am unsure of its complete history. I know the upholstery fabric was replaced to the current green brushed velvet in the early 1970s. There is evidence that some other fabric or something was previously tacked to the bottom of the seat rails. I am unsure if the wood was ever refinished- although the current state of the wood is beautiful. I am also unsure of the wood type- it's a medium, warm brown color with a wonderful patina. Fabric is in good condition, although there are 2 areas where the fabric shows slight indentation marks due to something stored on top of it; most likely with some effort, these can be brushed out or at least ... moreminimized. Only chair back is padded; seat is fabric only with just an additional liner layer that can be felt to add body sown inside. There are small. Movable, caster-like metal wheels on the 2 front feet. There are 2 sturdy springs which allow the chair to rock; springs are marked in an abbreviated form: Patent Applied For. This chair is in very nice condition and is certainly usable and rocks nicely with no squeaks. It is an antique and shows appropriate signs of its age and use- and is not perfect. There is a slight bit of play in each arm. Although arm screws might be able to be tightened, etc. Please study photos and ask any questions you may have. Chair approximate measurements: 26" deep x 22" wide x 45" high. Chair weight is approximately 22 lbs. You are looking at a 1880's Eastlake Style Victorian Platform Rocking Chair. Aka Patent Rocker. This particular chair, made by Streit& Schmit, Cincinnati, OH is in very good condition. The original patent was issued on January 19, 1875 and Reissued on January 23, 1880. I have copies of the patent paperwork filed by Charles Streit that I will include with the chair. This rocker is very comfortable and sturdy. It is made out of what I believe to be Mahogany, but I can't confirm it. I do not know the exact age of this beautiful piece but it dates to about 1890. This is a unique find as most often the adult or child size versions are found. The youth size is slightly larger than the child size allowing for an older child to use the rocker. This rocker came out of an estate in Cape May almost 20 years ago when I purchased it. I have not attempted to change the coverings it was found with. It could use a good polishing. But I will leave that to the new owner. Charles Eastlake furniture was the brainchild of Charles Eastlake(1836-1906) A British furniture designer and architect. Eastlake style' as it is referred, is the common name for his style of furniture, which became widespread throughout the last half of the nineteenth century. This is a beautiful antique hand carved oak platform rocker that has been totally restored. The wood was finished in a satin clear and it has brand new upholstery with all new padding. The fabric is blue cotton velvet with a rose floral pattern. It is a very comfortable chair, and very tight and solid. Most chairs from this period were small and narrow. Not this one. The seat is extra wide, and I padded up the seat to make it sit at normal height for the average modern person. All of the carving is perfect. There are no breaks, repairs, or damage anywhere.just the normal dings here and there and natural aging as with any antique furniture. As I said earlier, the upholstery and padding are all new so there are no worries about pet dander or tobacco smells, this chair is awesome! Platform Rocker, American Victorian in the Eastlake Sub-style
A beautiful. Fully functional platform rocker in excellent condition for its age. It has high-back styling with upholstered crest rail over four spindle trim. Padded back flanked by turned supports with finials, padded open arms with ring-turned and ball ends, and reeded rocker supports. This chair has been in our family for over 35 years. We purchased it from an antique dealer in Gilroy. CA and had it professionally restored at that time to include having the wood re-glued and the fabric replaced with a tapestry pattern that reflects its origin.
