Not sure of the origin or the exact age. Similar pieces on the net claim to be over 100 years old. This was found hanging on the wall of an avid antique collector. He had quite an eclectic collection of unusual pieces. Solid wood and painted and quite heavy. Distressed looking paint is in good condition. The is one chip on the butt cheek. As pictured, and probably a few dings here and there. There are two holes in the fists meant to hold a removable stick. There is one that is original to the piece(included) and the other one is missing. There is also a screw hole in the back in the middle of the wings where a hook was used to hang it. Here we have an adorable pair of wood carved putti that is said to be from a convent that was being torn down. They were saved by the contractor and I purchased them at auction a few years ago. The age is undetermined but the building was erected in 1812. From my research. The paint and technique all appear to be correct for the mid 19th century. I believe they are hand carved and likely Italy is the place of origin. Description Presenting a delightful carved wood putti/cherub/angel holding a rose figurine. He is hand-carved out of pine and was stained a warm walnut color. The arm was carved separately and applied. This piece dates to about 1900 and came from the New Hampshire region.There are a few nicks on the rose(can be stained to blend easily) and there is a split in the deriere region(other than the one God would have naturally put there) This is a great decorator's piece! As you can see in the photos this angel really shines when brightly lit; the gilding is ever so lovely. It is real gold. There was no synthetic gold in the 1800s. Gesso(plaster) and bole(red pigment clay) were applied over the carved wood to provide a smooth surface for the gold; the bole lends the gold a rich red undertone. Condition- Some age crackling and loss to gilding. Not too bad. Looks wonderful from the front. The back shows some repair. This is a delicate old piece. The wood is very dry and fragile. And parts of the carving are quite thin and fragile as a result. I feel this was removed from its mount at some point. Likely an altar or other religious decor, as I see old adhesive residue on the back. Back shows some glue reinforcement/ repair to damage in two spots. A tassel and the middle swag piece are reattached with glue. Another repair to wing tip is likely original to the time of the carving's creation. The hole and rivet to hang this may have been added later. The only repair that is noticed from the front. And then only under close examinatio

It was originally purchased at Nordstroms. And still has the original price tag, and a sticker that reads AYB. The angel's face is white, with hand painted gold and back eyes, textured gold hair, and layered wings. Large, carved three dimensional wings surround the angel and end in the shape of a heart. Both wings have raised feathers, and wisp like striations throughout. Due to being vintage, the angel does have some ware. There are some slight scuff marks on the paint, and minor cracks in the wood. This angel exudes a look of serenity and innocence. Antique Carved Wood Cherub Putti Salvaged Fragment Figure
For your consideration is this charming little hand made wood carving. More then likely a one of a kind piece or perhaps an architectural embellishment or possibly an unfinished project from long ago? Either way the piece is quite pleasing to behold as well as a collectible decorative ornamental addition to any home or office interior decor. Or a design project of your own. Its possibilities are many and will be left to the collector of all things unique.The carving is that of a darling little cherub draped in loin cloth and appearing to be holding onto a baluster or the like. Measurements are as follows 9.5 inches high x almost 5 inches wide. Being sold as a salvaged item with chips and areas of wood loss.Thank you for your interest.

VTG ANTIQUE ANGEL CHERUB PUTTI WOOD CARVED WITH GLASS EYES ITALY
This auction is for a fabulous early wood carved Putti Angel. Absolutely lovely. Measures 5 inches across. I believe this was made in Italy and that the ink stamp that is smeared would have said that. I had a pair like this once before and they were clearly marked Italy. Wonderful early paint. Great glass eyes. There is nothing wrong with this one. There is definite age. But I don't know how old. 1900? 1930? 1950? I certainly would not think later than 1950.
