It measures 9.6" tall, and roughly 5.8" across the base. It was used as a spill, as there is no wax residue, and the top edge shows darkness from smoke. A great Black Forest set of carved bear bookends. Late 40's vintage- brought over to Canada by a Swiss family who immigrated here. About 1950. The 4 inch bears are on a 2 1/2 x 3 5/8 x 3/4 inch base. The head is finely carved. And features red eyes(either glass or acrylic) No chips or cracks. The stain is holding up well. Considering the age- only minimal loss

It has typical cracking from the wood drying out over the years. It stands a whopping 89 inches. I believe it is probably Swiss in origin. The carving on the bears is very good. If it ever had a metal tray I do not have it. There is what appears to be glue in one of the cracks. It is very solid and was never broken, but its there. Vintage stag carving. This is a very nice wood carved stag that has been intricately carved by a skilled German or Swiss woodcarver. The base measures 14-1/2' wide by 4-1/4' deep and to the highest point of the antlers it stands 13' tall. It is in very good condition but with an age crack on the side of the wooded brush. By the front hoof(see last photo) but this does not detract. This is a great black forest carving and makes a wonderful display in a den or office. Q uestions welcome and thanks for the interest! Antique Intricate Hand Carved Swiss Black Forest Wood Owl Sculpture
This is a wonderful deep brown to black walnut owl statue or Figural finial. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. It is beautifully aged with a natural sheen and incredibly smooth surface. There's some dullness at the back of his head and a very fine line which through a loupe appears to be a part of the wood. He also has a crack across each leg that does not go all the way around, and appears to have been done intentionally in the carving. He measures 5" tall and about 2 1/2" wide with a 1 3/4" base. Welcome* Up for bidding is a very old hand carved Black Forest Nut Cracker with a gnome face. He was purchased from the artisan by my father when he served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He is expertly carved of hard wood. His coloration is still present in his red kerchief. Tanned face, red tongue, and brown"body" The carver put a great amount of detail into his features for his eyes, eye brows, and lips; very life-like. His jaw is hinged and when open displays his teeth and tongue. He apparently was used to crack nuts, so he has some signs of loving wear. I have done my best to describe him. Vintage 12 Piece Carved Wood Nativity Holy Family Creche Swiss Black Forest NR
Just in time for Christmas. This is an older 12 piece hand carved wood Nativity or creche set that I picked up this spring at an estate sale in the Washington DC area. The home had very nice Christmas and holiday items. Mostly from the 1950s and 1960s. I think this set spent most of its time in the original box. The carving, color and detail are really nice! I included a few photos with the figures with the manger, but I’m selling that separately. The closeup on the black magi gives you some idea of the detail and carving. You can see the wonderful coloring with subtle shading. There are no markings on the pieces. They were stored in their original shipping box which has the return address R. Michel. Woodcarvings, Haldenstrasse 13, Lucerne, Switzerland. It was mailed in 1958, so I’d assume the set dates from around then. As for the carver, ... moreit could be Swiss or German. I checked some Anri styles, but couldn’t find anything quite similar, so you’ll have to decide. It’s a nicely carved set no matter where it was made. They’re getting harder and harder to find. The set has 12 pieces. They include: Kneeling Mary. Joseph, 3 sheep, Jesus in Manger, Donkey, Standing Black Magi, Kneeling Magi, third Standing Magi, Shepherd with staff, and young kneeling Shepherd. The standing figures are all about 4.75 inches tall(12.07 cm) The sheep are about 1.75 inches long; the Jesus and manger is 2.25" by 1.75" There’s nice use of silver and gold on some of the gowns and crowns of the kings. The black Balthazar is my favorite piece… check out the photos. The overall condition is very good with no visible damage. The only issue is that the tip of one of the donkey’s ear is chipped. Represented by a walking bears on a rocky outcrops and chamois horns below for hanging“whips” I don’t believe these hooks are entirely old. The bears clearly are old(somewhere from the early 1900s) But the rocky outcrops with chamois horns appear not to be and were probably created in an effort to give the 2 bears something to do(rather than just sitting them on a table top, turn them into hooks! The bears have friendly faces, are in good condition, rich highlight colors, no missing ears or feet, nice glass eyes, and real chamois horns(no splits or broken tips) A few condition issues to note: the right nostril on the left facing bear is a bit worn(see pic) the left ear of the right facing bear has a chip; I can see evidence ... moreof reglues on a couple of feet; and there is a slight color difference between the bears(being old) and the bases(being not as old) But all-in-all, in spite of this old/new merger, they are really cool and very functional– they hung my house for years holding dog leashes. Up For Sale! A wonderful antique Swiss Carved Black Forest Bear Inkwell. The Black Forest carved items for the most part were all carved in Switzerland in the area around Brienze. In 1868 there were over 2000 woodcarvers in Switzerland. This is a bear sitting on a tree stump. Standing 7/3/4 inches tall the bear has very tiny black glass eyes. The bears arm is set so as to be able to hold a writing instrument. See Picture-The bear head pen IS NOT INCLUDED and is being sold seperately) By tilting the bear backward. The tree stump opens up to reveal the white porcelain ink pot which is original to this piece. The pot is not removable so please do not try to remove it or it may break. At the base it measures 5" wide. The bear itself is 3 1/4 inches tall. There is an age crack across the nose of the bear(see Picture) but only apparent with ... morevery up close inspection. I find no other flaws. This piece has been in my collection for over 30 years and is one of the nicest I have seen. It will make a wonderfull addition to anyone's collection. Stunning Antique Swiss Carved Black Forest Bear Desk Set MUST SEE!
Up For Auction! A stunning two tone wood Black Forest figural bear desk set! I have had a number of these but they have always been one color. This one is stunning with the different colors of wood. The highly detailed bear has tiny black glass eyes and his mouth has been painted red. The kiebe on his back can hold paper clips. The center tree stump is done in two colors and contains the inkwell. Note the top of the stump is done in light wood. While the opening for the inkwell is further down the stump. Unfortunately this did not have the ink pot when I acquired this 25 years ago. The right tree stump can hold other small items. The wooden pencil the bear is holding is hand carved and original to the set. It does not contain lead. The bear letter opener is wonderful and completes this set. There is a small area missing on the lower edge ... moreof the blade as can be seen in the picture. It measures 3.5cm long but does not detract from the beauty of this piece. Up For Auction! An unusual Black Forest figural bear Jewelry Box. This lovely box strays from the heavier theme of Black Forest carved items as though it was specifically made for a ladies dressing table to be used for jewelry. The box does have a lock mechanism and although I have owned this for over thirty years. I acquired it without a key. The bear measures 4 inches long. The overall length of the box is 7 inches by 4 inches deep by 5 inches high. Please note the pictures of the screw heads used to put the bottom and legs together. The screw heads are only 2cm wide. There are no nails used! The hand engraved tulip motif adorns the top and front of the box while a floral leaf is engraved on the end panels. Even the back of the box features two engraved star bursts. The inside compartments contain the original blue velvet material and the ... morebottoms of the two top compartments are padded.
