Rare 18th C. English Carved Oak Cherub Clock Shelf/Corbel By J.Mathews. Grantham Offered is this very rare 18th century signed english oak cherub clock shelf/corbel made by J. Mathews of Grantham England. All solid oak wood pegged construction hand carved into a beautiful winged cherub which has gained a deep rich patina over the past 200+ years. Heavy piece as the cherub looks to be made of around 5-6 blocks of oak joined togeter in one big block. Then carved into the cherub form. Signed under the shelf: J. MATHEWS CARVER& C GRANTHAM. Shelf measures 11.25in. tall, 12.25in. wing to wing and 7.25in. deep, weighing approx. 8lbs. CONDITION is EXCELLENT for its age still retaining original surface having only minor dings, chips, scratches etc. expected on such a old piece. Also one of the wood blocks that makes the left wing edge has warped ... moreslightly and is offset approx. 2mm from the rest of carving but barely noticeable and expected as different pieces of wood can dry out and shrink differently over time and is in no danger of coming off. The cherub face is carved with closed lips but the mouth looks open in photos that are taken with the flash almost as if it was surprised by the flash, but most likely just the glare and angle giving the very repeatable illusion[last photo] Just a very rare, unusual and beautiful antique making for a cherished addition to your collection and period decor!

The Roman Goddess of Freedom of which: During our research we have been informed it certainly dates from the mid 19th century. Dates about c1860s Of a French origin. Intricate relief head carving of the roman goddess of freedom: Libertas. The figure was used for the statue of Liberty. A gift from France. Intricate carving of the head of Libertas with its wonderful portrayal. Mounted onto the rear wooden decorative panel with its curved shape. The corbel with its panel has an overall size of about 14 x 10inches. Max depth of about 3inches. Condition: Considering the age.
