Antique Early 1900s Oak Berkshire Ice Box with Raised Panels & Original Hardware
Beautiful compact Berkshire Antique Oak Ice Box with raised panels on wheels. Exterior completely refinished when purchased. It was stripped and finished with 4 coats of Minwax Antique Wipe-On Varnish. Then handrubbed with 0000 steel wool and paste-wax. Original brass decorative hardware on front. Door handle has a lock. But I've never owned the key and don't know if it functions. The inset handle on the top lid is solid brass. The steel hinges on the lid are original, but obviously not as decorative and the ones on the front. Wheels were missing when purchased and have been replaced. Ice chamber is missing corrugated galvanized panel on which the ice rested. Provision" chamber is missing the wire shelves. Part of the original instruction label is still attached to the lid. It mentions"Sapolio" a very well known cleaning ... moreproduct in widespread use from 1869 to 1939. I found a Sapolio ad from 1924 specifically targeting Ice Box owners. The ornate nature of the hardware leads me to believe the Ice Box is from around 1910. Overall the piece is in very good condition. The measurements are 24" wide x 16" deep and 40 1/2" tall. The ice chamber measures 19" wide x 12" deep x 12" tall. The provision area measures 20" wide x 12" deep and 15 1/2" tall. No reserve. Available for pick-up in Frederick. Old Country Flatback Cupboard Raised Chamfered Panels Burnsville North Carolina
Old flat cupboard. Supposed to have originated in or around Burnsville, North carolina. that is where the family i bought it from said it came from. It has that mountain look about it, so i think it probably is from that area. the drawers are a different color, and that has been a mystery, BUT i am sure they are original to the piece, I just dont know if someone started to paint it, or they were going to paint all the panels and leave the rest natural, or what. A man I know who has seen many antique country and period pieces told me he had seen one or two others similar, brown drawers, the rest old black varnish, or whatever.Some of the pictures make the contrast seem drastic, others dont. the camera flash exaggerates the contrast, it is less noticeable in person, for sure. i think it is mostly like poplar and the shelving and back, maybe ... morepine, hard to tell, someone got happy with some blue paint inside! I think the back is beaded pine tounge and groove narrow boards, like old ceiling boards. it has 2 raised panels in each side, one in each lower door, and the drawers fronts are raised panel looking, they are thick drawer fronts. this has round nails mostly i think, not pegged, but maybe a nail here and there, where a peg might have otherwise been. They just built it however they built it, some is tounge and groove, and panelled, the lower doors are more like a rabbet joint, i think that is what you call it, country cabinetmaker's whatever hodgepodge, I am gonna build a cupboard construction, it is what it is. Besides the drawers. The rest of the exterior looks to be old black bubbley crazen vanish or shellac, whatever turns dark brown or black, and frogskins over the years. The door is made of solid wood, has 6 raised panels and 1 glass lite. The glass lite installed is actually plexi glass. Unfortunately. We don't have any old glass this size. However, we could order a new glass lite(i.e. beveled, tempered, leaded, stained, etc. and install it, Email us for a quote. Hardware: The door is not equipped with any hardware. However. Condition: On the exterior side of the door. The top of the hinge stile, edge of the lock stile, a spot along ... morethe hinge stile and some pieces of molding around the glass are chipped. On the interior side of the door. The edge of the lock housing, bottom rail and the bottoms of the lock and hinge stiles are all chipped; the rail below the glass is cracked and 2 panels below the rail are cracked as well. Otherwise. This door is in very good shape with only surface scrapes, scratches, small nail holes-minor cosmetic blemishes, which would be removed during the finishing process or covered if painted. Quirks& Considerations: There is a metal cover in the place where 3 raised panels sit on the opposite side of the door. There are gaps approx. 1/8" between the hinge stile and the rails and panels. The gaps are filled with wood putty. Which is starting to crack and chip. Causing the gaps to be more visible. All of the molding around the glass on the interior side of the door was replaced by a previous owner. The width of the door was unevenly cut by 1/8" at some point. Most likely to accommodate for a warped floor or settling foundation. We could remove the metal cover. Even the width, install new molding and fix the gaps. email us for a quote. The door is made of solid, old pine and is painted on both sides. If you think that pine is a weak. Soft wood; please keep in mind that the wood milled from modern pine trees, which only grow for a few decades before they are cut down, is not the same quality as the wood that was milled by our forefathers from trees that were hundreds of years old. This door was built using the wood from mature pine trees, and exhibits the qualities of wood that has endured the test of time. As a result, it's physically harder, less susceptible to warping and twisting, and more insect and rot resistant than today's pine lumber. The door has an arched top with 4 raised panels on both sides. Quirks& ... moreConsiderations: The door originally had a 5th panel at the bottom. There are 4 attractive panels with a lovely sunburst design and between the top of each of these panels there is a raised diamond pattern. There are 5, horizontal, raised panels on both sides of the door. Also, please don't think that"veneer" means inferior quality. Unlike the paper-thin veneers used on modern doors and furniture. These veneers are almost 1/8" thick and provide strength and stability to the door. The door could be sanded and refinished several times before the door would need to be re-veneered. Here is a fabulous early 19th century French wardrobe with original hinges and lovely carving across the top above the doors including raised carved applique date of 1835. Imported to Charleston from France by it's current owner after he purchased it at a high end antiques store in Normandy. The finish particularly on the front doors is nice with lovely wood grains and the original long metal hinges holding the doors in place. It stands 78 inches tall and measures 60 inches wide and 28 inches deep front to back at the widest points on it's bonnet. The outside of the closet itself measures closer to 54 inches wide and 26 inches from the front of the doors back to the wall. It measures 33.75 inches by 81 inches by 1.5. Door 2 is pretty much the same. Only one side has the heavy moldings. There is 1 steeple pin missing. It is 33.5 x 81.5 x 1.5. Your bid buys both. We are unable to determine the exact wood type used for the 1/16" veneers. We have narrowed it down to either Birch or Oak. Otherwise, the core of the door is solid pine and the door features 4 raised panels on each side. Please don't think that"veneer" means inferior quality. Unlike the paper-thin veneers used on modern doors and furniture. These veneers are 1/16" thick and provide strength and stability to the door. Hardware: The door is equipped with a pivot hinge receiver plate on the top of the door. And a double-action spring hinge on the bottom of the door. The door is made of solid rift sawn oak and has 6 raised panels each. Hardware: The door is equipped with 2 cast iron rollers. And a copper-plated steel lockset made by"P.F Corbin Mfg. Co. of New Britain, CT circa 1895. The lockset works and even has it's original key! All of the hardware is operational but needs a good cleaning.
