For your consideration is a complete rare silver gilded over bronze reliquary cross that depicts Jesus' crucifixion on one side and his resurrection on the other. This piece is truly a work of art that was done by a master craftsman. It measures 57mm x 25mm x 4mm. And is handcrafted with the upmost detail. This piece is unlike most of the reliquary crosses that come up for bids as the detail is still in remarkable condition considering the age. Two halves of Byzantine reliquary crosses ca. 6th-10th Century AD. The larger is 2" x 1-1/2" 5cm x 3.5cm) the smaller is 1-3/8" x 1-3/16" 3.6cm x 3cm) a bit of debris/corrosion on the insides from long burial, the loop on one side of the larger cross broken off and lost to antiquity. Probably a metal detector find, it dates from the 6th-7th century AD, it's in very good condition for its age, with light wear, encrusted dirt and one lower hinge clip missing. The object is decorated in relief with a figure with arms raised in supplication. This is probably St George. The most common figure on this type of cross. The hinge connection at the top is broken away, while the recessed reverse reveals the reliquary space. The surface has an overall pleasant sage green patina.
