The Carolingian(early 742 AD) and the later Ottonian courts(start 962 AD) were linked to the Byzantine Empire and adopted their fashion resulting in the northern European Romanesque jewelry style. In the Byzantine Empire jewelry played an important role. It acted as a way to express ones status and as a diplomatic tool. In 529 AD. Emperor Justinian took up laws regulating the wearing and usage of jewelry in a new set of laws, later to be called the Justinian Code. He explicitly writes that sapphires, emeralds and pearls are reserved for the emperor's use but every free man is entitled to wear a gold ring. This may tell us something about the widespread use and great popularity of jewelry. One could easily argue that there hadn't been a need for such a law if jewelry had been a purely aristocratic phenomenon. The Byzantine Empire was wealthy. The ring was not actually recovered with the original gemstone intact, however usually this style of bronze ring was set either with a glass gemstone(glass was quite costly) or with some form of quartz crystal; i.e. clear quartz, orange quartz(carnelian” or purple quartz(amethyst” or lapis lazuli. The ring is very handsome and elegant in design. The"bezel" or face of the ring bears a very distinct abstract design, however though we’ve scrutinized the engraved design carefully, we’re unable to determine what it represents. Some believe it to be the abstract representation of a shaman’s face. However it seems most likely to be the abstract representation of two stags with antlers locked in combat. Given the cultural popularity of such depictions in the region during the ancient and medieval world, this seems most likely. This is a fairly light weight ring, more like a contemporary ring than the thick and lumpy rings often produced during the early years of the Roman Empire. It is a very handsome and complex design, and probably was a very significant personal possession of whomsoever originally owned the ring. There are unmistakable indications that the ring was worn fairly often by whomsoever the ancient owner was. 18th century ring byzantine green glass with hanging pearl. 925 silver & Bronze
This is without a doubt the most unusual ring I've ever laid eyes on. Another purchase at a European auction. One side of the ring has a 925 stamp. Quite hard to read. The other side appears to be made of bronze. There is a green glass stone on the bronze side and white glass with a pearl on the silver side. It is just so fascinating. It weighs 9.3 grams and is a size 5.25 although with the open setting it could be altered. While I'm not sure of it's actual age. It shows great patina and filigree work on either side of the ring.
