These were unique crates as they were usually built with whatever was available at the time they needed them. This is a little more lightweight than the average potato crate but heavier than a regular fruit or apple crate.somewhat of a cross between the two. They have been packed away in a barn for many many years and are finally again seeing the light of day. The size of the crate is 14 3/4" x 19 1/2" x 13 1/4" roughly. I am putting up for sale this vintage 1/3 Barrel(meant to hold 33 pounds of cranberries) Wooden Cranberry Box/ Crate which is plain on the outside. Another cranberry box end with the name"Pilgrim Fruit Co. has been inserted into the middle of the box and secured with old box nails and has been braced with the strips of wood from another box underneath it to make it more secure. It could be used as a shelf or an open face cabinet for one's treasures and what not with that old Cape Cod/ New England look. This box/ shelf is about 50 years old. The open slats on the sides& bottom's purpose was to keep the cranberries vented to avoid rotting of the cranberries during storage. These types of boxes were used to hold 1/3 of a barrel(33 pounds) of freshly picked cranberries during harvest season back in the day and were not used for ... moreshipping. This same size and type of box is still used to this day although some people perfer to use burlap bags when dry picking their cranberries because it's less labor intensive. This box is in good& solid condition but it has a few insignificant hairline cracks. Some nicks, scrapes& is weathered from age as can be seen in the pictures. Needs a good cleaning prior to use.
