You have lions heads on the cornice.Fruit carvings down the sides,fish,birds,snake and more. The bookcase comes in two sections.The top section has beveled glass doors that open up to three levels of shelves. Below that you have the carved turned columns that support the top section. Antoine Paris, flanked on each side of the central by a glass panel surmounted by original marble top with beveled edge. It has two adjustable glass shelfs and a mirror backing. Antoine Krieger. Born in Alsace on June 5, 1804, set up shop in the Faubourg Sainte-Antoine(the furniture-making district of Paris) in 1826 with his brother as Maison Krieger and was married there in 1829. The marriage of his two daughters, one in 1849 to the cabinet-maker Claude-Julien Cosse, and the other in 1853 to the merchant Henry Racault, increased his prosperity. He then formed a partnership with his sons-in-law one of whom was to retire in 1858 and the other in 1870. At that date, ... morethe furniture and tapestry-making establishment, situated at 76 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, was extended to include no. 74 of the same street. A grandson by marriage became one of the partners in 1880. On Krieger’s death in 1856, the company passed to his sons-in-law and became Cosse-Racault et Cie. Finally, after further name changes, it became Damon& Cie circa 1880, and moved to 74, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine. From 1870 to 1955, when it was struck off the register of commerce, the company remained a family affair, in the hands of the Damon family which descended from Antoine Krieger's wife. Antoine Krieger, who retired from the company in 1860, and his son-in-law Cosse, on their deaths, respectively in 1869 and 1883, left considerable property. Cosse had banked upon the transformation of Paris by Haussmann by constructing an apartment building situated on the boulevard Voltaire. The Maison Krieger won prizes at the Exposition des produits de l'Industrie in 1849 and in the Universal Exhibitions of 1851 and 1855. This is an exceptional antique French Empire mahogany bookcase in a classical style. It is of good size and measures 60 inches in height. 55.5 inches in length, 15 inches in depth. The interior depth is 10.5 inches by 26 inches on both sides. The doors are the original beveled glass doors in excellent condition with no nicks or damage. The bookcase has brass inlay all around it as well as classical brass or bronze mounts around the crest of the bookcase. The wood is a clean original finish mahogany in excellent condition. It is truly a well made top quality bookcase in an excellent style and you wont find them much better ... morethen this. It is probably 1880s in age. Due to the size of this piece it either needs to be picked up here on Cape Cod or it must be shipped freight at the cost of the purchaser. ANTIQUE FRENCH COUNTRY 18 c. OAK BIBLIOTHEQUE BUFFET BOOKCASE Formally the top part of an 18th century French Buffet a Deux Corps currently used as a bookcase. The bottom part was lost through the centuries and the top was raised on bun feet and rounded apron was added to the bottom. This transformation took place a while ago and the wood shows some aging and doesn’t stand out. Two doors open wide. Revealing the interior, which is about 52” from side to side ... moreand 13” deep and 52” tall. We have added two 1 ½” thick heavy duty pine shelves. Which are completely adjustable and will hold a lot of weight. The shelves were aged to look old and will not stand out. The front doors are covered with gathered French country style fabric. Which can be removed so that you can see the interior through the glass. The lock is in working condition, complete with the key. The bibliotheque measures about 59” at the widest point and about 20 ¾” deep. It stands up about 63 ½” tall and the top surface can be used as a shelf. Displaying collectable items. Very heavy. Solid and well built item. The primer material is oak. However, secondary woods was also used on the sides and the back, which is common for 18th Century furniture. We were using it in our office for files and fabric samplers and it is hard to find a bookcase which will fit oversized files and provide such great access as this item does. France during the 1920s and converted into a bookcase. The front doors have glass on top with geometric designs in oak on the lower half of them. The cornice is beautifully carved. When opened the piece reveals six shelves that are held in place by a bracket system which makes the shelves easily removable/ adjustable. ... moreThere is a latch on the left hand side of the interior that holds the left door closed. This piece was well cared for over the last 80 years and shows little sign of wear and tear. It would certainly compliment any home or office. The large cornice has a beautifully carved face. The fluted columns look great! All of the shelves are fully adjustable. Note the four pegs that hold the center piece to the side. This is how most of the armoire is held together. This latch secures the left door. The geometric designs on the lower portion of the doors is a traditional feature of pieces made in Brittany. These turned feet are solid oak and very sturdy.
